- DiggLive, on 12/14/2007, -6/+52*Top Best 50 Opensource Applications For Design
See, it works without Ubuntu in the title also. But then it wouldn't hit the front page. - tkareeson, on 12/14/2007, -2/+27The blog owner should be in one of those "Top X Hottest Geeks" posts.
- rabidmonkey1, on 12/14/2007, -1/+14translation: bleh pay through the nose for a restricted and proprietary system so you can make fun of anyone who uses a "PC" or "Personal Computer," which Macs most definitely are not because, you know, they can't play games. I mean, why are macs better than PCs? Oh right, the BSD core, but a dumb user is a dumb user and I'll probably eff it up despite the good programming! Spyware toolbar! YEAH! I need that!! *Installed* Wait... why am I getting so many popups?! I thought Mac's weren't supposed to have viruses! Oh wait, you mean to tell me I'm a victim of SLICK MARKETING?!?! NOOOOOOO!!!!!
- syuusuke, on 12/14/2007, -4/+15forget the list of applications, take a look at her jugs man!
- tvanwyk, on 12/14/2007, -0/+10"There are some nice programs in that list. Too bad I don't use ubuntu, so I can't use any of them."
I know what you mean. We really need an emulator so we can use these "Ubuntu apps." - Carburetor, on 12/14/2007, -1/+10Forget about design for a sec,
She's so cute! - DeviateSeptum, on 12/14/2007, -0/+9That was a good linux post. Many apparently good applications that I've never even heard of. Thanks.
- ArthurSucks, on 12/14/2007, -0/+9You're just angry cause you paid too much for your apple PC.
- nayajhen, on 12/14/2007, -2/+11THANK YOU! I can't believe it took so long for someone to say that... Do you guys even pay attention to what you are reading?
- greenIridium, on 12/14/2007, -4/+12I like Ubuntu very much, specially Fluxbuntu. You should consider having a second hard drive with Fluxbuntu, or test it in an old PC. You'll ve surprised of its performance
- tvanwyk, on 12/14/2007, -2/+10"Buried for being Ubuntu centric.
They're ***** linux applications for crying out loud you idiot."
Word...
What's more pathetic than this article? The fact that you get buried if you mention that there are other distros you can install these on. And who says the Digg Linux/Unix page isn't populated by newbie Ubuntu fanboys who think they're "l33t" at Linux because they can use SPM. - SteveMax, on 12/14/2007, -1/+9I'm writing an Ubuntu emulator for Linux. It's almost complete, only it doesn't turn your desktop brown. Anyone wants to help testing?
- KayDex86, on 12/14/2007, -2/+9What, no Inkscape?
- wvdavis, on 12/14/2007, -0/+6Something tells me her in-box will be flooded.
- anylo, on 12/14/2007, -4/+10Are you stupid or something? Those are open source apps and some of those runs quite nicely even in Windows/Mac.
Anyway, those are available from Ubuntu repositories for n00bs who can't type ./configure && make && make install. - mercurysquad, on 12/14/2007, -0/+5But it's pretty damn good.
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -4/+9Thats ironic too when they are a 'democracy' with only one political party (Republicrats).
- joshuaer, on 12/14/2007, -0/+5I just installed it on my Macbook last night and was searching for design software Thanks.
- ruthless34, on 12/14/2007, -1/+6It's actually the husband providing content and she posting it. She's a digital artist.
- iluvdrbonner, on 12/14/2007, -4/+9Buried because site admin/ submitter is not really a girl. Rule 16.
- element247, on 12/14/2007, -13/+17I too am sick of these "Ubuntu applications".
- nayajhen, on 12/14/2007, -1/+5WTF?
- traxen, on 12/14/2007, -0/+4Well, cute girl.. and thanx to her little blogpost .. I got "specto" ;)
Anyone know if there's a good utility like that for windows? - Phlosten, on 12/17/2007, -0/+4Love Ubuntu, great applications.
- ryker, on 12/14/2007, -0/+4I was just thinking the same thing.
Also, even though she mentions these are for Ubuntu, they are great apps for most distros. - johnnykwest, on 12/14/2007, -2/+6Please tell me you meant the double, double-entendres...
- tvanwyk, on 12/14/2007, -1/+4"I use ubuntu, but still find it surprising that people think ubuntu and open source programs are a single entity. It's like Americans thinking they are the only democracy in the world."
Nice try, but that's one of the most non-apt analogies of all time. - rabidmonkey1, on 12/14/2007, -2/+5/sarcasm
- kingkilr, on 12/14/2007, -1/+4Scite is also awesome for Windows.
- Carburetor, on 12/14/2007, -0/+3One day you'll grow up, and learn that making fun of friendly distro just because some of your friends can't install your "choice",or don't want to use Google for it, doesn't make you "hacker" or cooler then others.
I'm using Linux for more then 5 years, i used all the major "complicated" Distros for a long time,I'm a console freak, and Ubuntu made me convert even from the perfect Debian for my desktop usage.
Yeah, i had to tweak it, and secure it, and adding some custom scripts, and kicking networkmanager, but after doing all the workaround, i got the best reliable, productive, and stable Linux based box for my desktop usage.
And I'm considering myself a Linux expert.
The balancing between stability , and organized major update circles made me just love it.
I'd prefer to spend my time on productive usage (like programming) then maintaining my os, and compiling it just for fun (I'm compiling something only when there's a real reason to).
if you hate ubuntu or it's users, you have nothing in common with all the open source idea.
Besides, Ubuntu is one of the major reasons Linux goes mainstream lately, that means more hardware support, that means more compatible popular programs (e.g Nero) and more friendly sites for other browsers.
Even if it's not your cup of tea, there's no reason to hate it, and people who use it. - crainte, on 12/14/2007, -1/+4Decent list, but buried for the use of Ubuntu in the title. How about just "Linux" ? Anyone? No? Fine.
- andycr512, on 12/14/2007, -0/+3Something's wrong. I dual boot XP and Ubuntu and they're comparable in speed.
- davidrools, on 12/15/2007, -0/+3To be fair, the submitter posted the title of the blog post. The blog post may be ubuntu-centric but she could just be serving the ubuntu crowd, so no harm done there.
I was more put off by the "top best 50..." that should mean multiple "best 50" lists - willfe, on 12/15/2007, -0/+3Heh. I've just made the happy discovery that Zim (referenced in this blog entry) is a remarkably handy little app. Try this for some very near-nirvana self-organizational happiness if you've got a Linux/Unix box somewhere that you can talk to over the network:
Zim + Subversion + SSH port forwarding + VNC
What does that get you? A free-form easy-to-use Wiki editor, with built-in (well, plugged-in, technically) version control, that uses plain text files (that can be edited anywhere by any editor) and a dead-simple markup syntax, that you can access anywhere that can run SSH (for tunneling) and VNC (for the GUI), and whose plain data files can *also* be accessed anywhere you can do a SVN checkout. Since Zim also runs on Win32, even the Windows users aren't missing out.
The version control bit means you don't ever lose notes/entries even if you accidentally delete them so long as you commit your changes every time you finish working with the tool. It's much more useful than you might expect it to be. - craigyjack, on 12/15/2007, -0/+2wow, way to make linux users sound like jackasses. where is the community going?
- tvanwyk, on 12/15/2007, -0/+2Hell yes. I want in on the fun!
(Meanwhile, I'm wondering if I got dugg up because some people that I was being serious about an "Ubuntu emulator". - neognostic, on 12/14/2007, -1/+3I like her artwork too, but kept on going back to her picture!
- PatrickBrown, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2Now THAT is what I call progress.
No one could have said that about any linux distro a few years ago. - cactus476, on 12/14/2007, -3/+5Dugg for the hot chick, Emma Alvarez.
- Carburetor, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2Thanks for the advice, I'll try it on my old laptop.
- tvanwyk, on 12/14/2007, -2/+4Holy OT, batman!
- rabidmonkey1, on 12/14/2007, -9/+11The real morons are the people who don't realize that he's being sarcastic... Wow.
- arjie, on 12/15/2007, -0/+2Pixel is not open source. Look at the title.
- asforme, on 12/15/2007, -0/+1While what you say is true, articles like these are to help people who are new to Linux and Ubuntu find software. It is good because most of the software is avaliable in synaptic. Hopefully with articles like these getting publicity people might be more able to quickly find out what package they need to install to accomplish a specific task instead of giving up and going back to windows.
- dasunst3r, on 12/14/2007, -1/+2I hate Kompozer. It takes the cake for buggiest piece of **** ever.
- zwaldowski, on 12/14/2007, -0/+1*gasp*! We aren't?!
- emmaalvarez, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1Thanks balazsbela.
It's not that they doubt that I am a woman, it's sexism that makes some people thing that women are idiot.
And in addition, Ubuntu is the easiest Linux, anyone that can use a PC can use it. - emmaalvarez, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1I am very happy with the warm welcome of this post, but I must ask you people one thing.
I saw many comments here, and some blogs doubting that a woman can do a list of good software, and even be interested or be familiar with Linux.
I think those comments are simply sexism.
I know that there may be few women that use Linux, but these kind of comments seem more an insult than an objective appreciation of reality.
Please take some time thinking if you would like to read something like "A white (or black, or yellow) man couldn't be able to do that". How would you feel?
Well, so that's how women feel when you do that stupid comments.
And if you don't welcome women to Ubuntu, they will just reject it.
By the way, I had other successful posts, and hadn't these kind of comments. So, Ubuntu users, think a while why there are so few women here. -
