http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_gaming - Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -0/+33Unreal Tournament 2007 will almost certainly deserve a place in the top 8 when it's released later this year.
- tropican8, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28Tuxracer? I thought this list was supposed to be of 2007? I have nothing against the game, but someone buying the planetpenguin domain recently and setting up a wiki doesn't make this a "game of 2007."
- corevette, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27also think True Combat : Elite should've been up there, my personal favorite FPS for linux ( http://www.truecombatelite.net/ )
although, i still would like my ATI graphics card to work with other FPS's like quake wars - BlackAdderIII, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30As a Linux gamer, let me tell you this list is like someone putting Minesweeper in the top 8 games for windows and missing out almost all of the real top 100.
1. Most of the games aren't 2007.
2. America's Army isn't a Linux game.
3. if Nexuiz is above Tremulous I'm a monkey's uncle.
4. If padman and tuxracer, not 2007 are on there and True Combat: Elite/Enemy Territory etc. and the big commercial games aren't, the writer is Smoking. Crack.
5. ZERO research has been done - they only actually have one of the biggest commercial games for Linux "of 2007" on this list. I googled this in 1 second, no excuse.
You can easily put together a list of games which are worth taking time out of your day to play, without a doubt.
"Top 8 games" genuinely seems like some sort of attempt at a joke. ***** padman and tuxracer? Nexuiz the best FPS on Linux?!! It's not only disliked, It has something like a tenth of the playerbase of any of the top 2 or 3 FPS titles on Linux.
Buried as inaccurate. - agrabob, on 10/11/2007, -5/+29Wow, I had no idea that Quake Wars was going to be linux native. I've been drooling over it as the replacement for BF2.
Now more reasons to not or put off buying vista. - CurtHowland, on 10/11/2007, -1/+220.5: Nethack http://www.nethack.org/
- cosmotron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16DEFCON should be on there now, it was just recently released for Linux:
http://forums.introversion.co.uk/introversion/viewtopic.php?t=738 - kokuei, on 10/11/2007, -9/+25Best of What People Are Playing in 2007 maybe. If that's all we have to look forward to in Linux gaming, we're in a sad state of affairs people.
How many of those games weren't even released this year? No, patches don't count. - slythfox, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Tux racer? Seriously. It was discontinued a long time ago (2001), then restarted, named Planet Penguin Racer, which then got discontinued again.
It's now slowly starting up again, soon under a slightly different name to avoid "confusion"
http://planetpenguinracer.com/ - subbzzz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Um.. Where is OpenArena?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenArena - tapo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14I'm not normally one for turn based strategy, but I love Battle for Wesnoth. Everyone should check it out, the polish and gameplay is incredible and it definitely deserves the #1 spot.
http://www.wesnoth.org/ - trollick, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17More people should develop open source games for Linux, instead of working on yet another window manager.
- kaisa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I'm suprised warsow wasn't on this list. I would have listed that before Nexiuz. IMO, warsow's gameplay/graphics/community absolutely dominates Nexiuz...warsow would have been the better choice there.
http://www.warsow.net - Fartag, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12That's easy to fix. The more people using Linux, the more games will be made for it. Fortunately we don't all just support things merely because they're better supported now, or we'd never have gotten out of the caves / trees / oceans eleventy bajillion years ago.
- nemoder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9No mention of Savage2?! For shame.
http://savage2.s2games.com - barbobot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Frets on Fire. Seriously, I can't get enough of it
http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/ - steely, on 10/11/2007, -8/+16I agree. We all know there aren't enough titles for a top ten list. The title of this story gives you an idea of the sorry state Linux is in when gaming is concerned.
- asdmalol, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8where's xmoto ?!
- prammy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9@trollick:
Agreed. But making a good game is a lot of hard work especially if you need it to be original.
I would love to see adventure games come back, and not just as a rehashed FPS. Something like Kings Quest series, Leisure Suit Larry series but with updated graphics, voice over acting etc. But making something like this takes a LOT of work and this is just in the design, not even going to the development phase. This is why most free games being released are usually multiplayer arena style or arcade.
But an open source game would be a great idea, especially if the storyline, characters etc could be open source in the term that anyone would be allowed to expand the original story. Then again a fork in the storyline can be pretty bad. But with the proper people contributing the characters could develop quite well. Build an open source franchise so to say and allow people to contribute :) - se1zure, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12When Americas Army is a "top game", you know you've got issues.
- arjie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Xmoto isn't 3d, but it's hilarious! Then there's Super Mario War too. Those are 2d games, but they're so much fun!
- prammy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7It is an old game but I would add Urban Terror to the list as well.
- ClassicQ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Hard to believe Neverball [ http://icculus.org/neverball/ ] wasn't on the list, it's cross-platform and a Linux staple for me. Highly addictive and what I'd consider a "classic" - same as TuxRacer/PlanetPenguin Racer and the SuperMario type remake SuperTux (which also wasn't listed) [http://supertux.lethargik.org/].
- Nexusmonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8This list is seriously lacking.
- Atmandk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8"It’s the first well known computer game used for political aims. The game is used as a playable recruiting tool and critics have charged the game serves as a propaganda device."
doubleplus good game. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I would've liked to see Darwinia on that list; one of the best RTSs I've ever played. I'm so hooked on that game at the moment it's unreal.
- sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8they can not get 10 games on this list because they did not put any thought or research in to this. there are a ton of games each year that work natively in linux. And with wine you can play about 3/4 the games you can play natively in windows. sure more come out for windows then linux but at least more come out for linux then mac,
- noddyxoi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6http://www.adom.de/ is like nethack but much easier to get into and more user friendly interface, also the gameplay is less random.
- PARTyZAN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5ET: QW hasn't even been released. I don't know what it's doing on a ladder with mostly released games, which you can try and give your own opinion about gameplay.
- halfwavedipole, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6there isn't any mention of cube
www.cubeengine.com - TritonX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5That's because porting from linux to windows or OSX is a piece of cake. I'd like it to be the same the other way.
- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Everyone knows the best Linux game is BZTanks.
End of line. - staffrocket, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Tux Racer? "The last release of Tux Racer was version 0.61, 29th October 2001." lolz
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Hey Rhino2, fourth grade called. They want their grammar back.
- arjie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Freespace 2. I forget the name of the Open source version, but it's nice. Oh yeah, oops, not 2007. Still a nice game.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6America's Army? Are you ***** kidding me?
Yeah, great. Let's add the game that's a big ***** ad for the US Government.
"Hey, see, being in the army is fun! It's just like a game! See all the fun you're having playing this with friends? You can do it in real life if you join up!"
I can't believe people buy into that crap. - UKsHaDoW, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Using openGL extensions, it can use everything DX10 has, so yes!
But the game would need to be openGL, but it would still get all the advantage of DX10. - foolfromhell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Freespace 2- http://www.hard-light.net/
[V] released the source code and it has been enhanced! - muszek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It is, it's, just the older versions. Much older - afair 2.5 was the last one that worked under linux. Still, it's a very good game. I'm not sure it should make the list of top games of 2007, though (2.5 was released at least 2 years ago... maybe more).
- arjie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@trollick:Yes boss, anything you say boss.
@prammy: Actually, I had a funny idea once, similar to yours, forks in the storyline are part of the game. So if your character makes a certain choice in the game somewhere along the line, or depending upon the status of some objective (success/failed/not yet achieved) the storyline moves along a different line. So you get multiple different endings depending on how you play! Replay value! - SynchCounter, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Rhino, Tremulous is one of the furthest things from "generic FPS" I've ever played.
If you're interested in inventive gameplay that is very dependent on strategy almost as much as on tactics/bunnyhopping skills, Tremulous is the kind of game for you. Doesn't look very impressive, though.
The "review" missed the fact that not only are there two sides which are completely different, but the game is a hybrid RTS/FPS, in that both sides have the ability to build buildings/structures which can help them win by providing equipment, healing, more spawn points, defense, etc: and both sides earn credits/evolves to buy themselves new equipment/evolve into better creatures. And there are 3 "stages", cause teams unlock new structures and units based on kills, and how the teams play each other depends on what stage they're in.
I usually really hate FPSes, to tell the truth. Especially of a deathmatch variety. But I really like Tremulous. So, you know, 5 stars, I highly recommend it. - tangerine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3All apologies.

My bad. - Frozen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I wish Linux and Mac's could come up with a standard set of develop tools, so more companies might develop games for Linux. To bad Sony's does not take advantage of using Linux technology with the PS3, so developers could do a easy port. Microsoft seems positioned to continue the domination of console and PC games.
- 2kude, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4There are many, many other great (although not "hardcore, they're more casual) games for Linux.
Obviously if you want the latest and greatest, Linux is not for you. But the "vast majority" of the world doesn't play games unless they're pick-up-and-play, which Linux has plenty of.
The article author's taste is rather poor, I might add. - HalFTW, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Re install or try another distro.
e.g: http://www.opensuse.org/ - kindrobot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5You've eaten the wrong vegan food. I am not vegan and I eat it often. Much of it is not assy.

I couldn't agree more. If non-2007 games can be on there (and they are), putting Nexuiz in the top spot for FPS is insane, completely insane. - Zaggynl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yes, Linux needs more (good) applications and games, yes people like games and actually play those.
