- StanStutter, on 12/23/2007, -0/+29Liquid rescale is pretty cool:
http://liquidrescale.wikidot.com/en:examples - Verz, on 12/23/2007, -0/+16Could use some example images of each..
- Phlosten, on 12/23/2007, -0/+10No, but that would be very cool. Who is going to jump in and code for this?
- killthemoles, on 12/23/2007, -0/+10Does GIMP have some kind of manager like Eclipse does where you could just checkmark and download what plugins you wanted rather than installing them each individually.
- terencec, on 12/24/2007, -0/+9HAHA your comment is on Digg's most unpopular comments list
http://digg.com/tech_news/Track_Digg_s_Most_Unpopu ... - digitalvik, on 12/23/2007, -2/+11Very nice compilation.
- BlueSkyfish, on 12/23/2007, -0/+8Since everyone abandoned Paint Shop Pro
- mossblaser, on 12/23/2007, -0/+8Because I can use GIMP on linux, because I can run GIMP without admin rights on windows, because I can look how gimp works, because I can recommend GIMP to people who don't have hundreds of £ spare to buy a program to crop and adjust colour balances on their holiday pictures, because GIMP doesn't decide what I can and can't edit (try opening a banknote in photoshop to put someone's face on it). That enough reasons?
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -1/+9HAHA ur comment only got -13 digs
- passedoutghost, on 12/23/2007, -0/+7I'm been mucking around in Gimp for a few days, my images turn out ok, not fantastic, but the Gimp comes pretty close to Photoshop in terms of features. Here's a pretty simple wallpaper: http://i13.tinypic.com/85lhrvk.jpg
[Don't judge me too harshly cause I've only been using Gimp for about a 3 days when I made that and it probably doesn't even compare with what experienced users could make] - bbqsalad, on 12/23/2007, -0/+7Indeed. Thanks to the poster.
- sirhomer, on 12/23/2007, -3/+9I hope Adobe does some kind of crackdown on Photoshop pirates soon. I don't usually support stuff like that, but really the world would be a better place without Digg Photoshop zealots trolling every The GIMP thread.
- jorgenmz, on 12/23/2007, -0/+6I've used hugin a couple of times and seems to do an ok job. Don't know if it'll be useful to you but... well, I thought I'd brought it up in case you haven't heard of it.
- sirhomer, on 12/23/2007, -1/+6To make a winter themed website?
- mossblaser, on 12/23/2007, -0/+5Thats ur drivers/ability to use XSane mate. Sorry to burst ur bubble mate.
- sirhomer, on 12/23/2007, -1/+6Reported for spam: http://digg.com/users/josephg/history/comments
I think all your customers might be happier if you put as much effort on improving your software as much as you spam it. If you want to use Digg as an ad agency how about you pay for advertising like everyone else? - sirhomer, on 12/23/2007, -5/+9Why? Photoshop's UI is *****. It doesn't fit well in Linux at all. MDI interfaces don't play well with virtual desktops or tiled window managers. With GIMP I can use dual monitors seamlessly or split different images on diferent virtual desktops. Can't do that with Photoshop's interface. However, if you really want Photoshop's ***** UI check out GimpShop, which tries to clone it.
- Justice101, on 12/23/2007, -0/+3sorry for the comment hitching, but watch out some of those second tier links lead to Trojans.
- passedoutghost, on 12/23/2007, -3/+6Not everyone is willing to pay or waste their bandwidth to pirate Photoshop. Oh wait what am I saying? This is digg!
- stalefries, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3If you plan on doing a lot of that style, you'd be better off learning something like Inkscape first.
- AzureRise, on 12/23/2007, -0/+3*****, you?
- michuk, on 12/23/2007, -0/+3Speaking of which: http://polishlinux.org/apps/graphics/gimp-tricks-l ...
- stoanhart, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2I hope they make the gimp plugin real-time, like the application in the demo video. Right now, it's pretty slow. Still very awesome though.
- Sinne, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2Great. Thanks!
- mossblaser, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2pant.net isn;t trying to be photoshop (read thier site) - they are trying to be an *easy to use* but powerful editor built on .net. Personally I don't like it and .net runs ***** anyway, besides I can use linux for all my aps if i dnt use it so its an easy choice.
- mossblaser, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2***** you.
- inactive, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1gimp still stinks on OS X - Pixelmator is better
- keyo, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Just be glad adobe didn't patent this one.
- inactive, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1You must be retarded...
It's under Filters > Enhance > Antialias
Now stop bashing GIMP. - fyngyrz, on 12/24/2007, -1/+2Now that's just plain ignorant. There are plenty of other applications. The difference is in marketing as far as who has heard of what, or not. Up a few messages, some guy TRIED to tell you clowns about "pixel", and he was dug down and bitched at by some moron. If your minds were even fractionally open, you'd know about Ron Scott's work and others. There are plenty of VERY powerful apps out there. They all have pros and cons (and that surely includes both Photoshop and the Gimp.) If you (cough) "professionals" didn't spend so much time echoing Adobe's propaganda on the one hand, and the "gotta be open source" children's rhyme on the other, you'd probably have time and energy to learn a heck of a lot more about the graphics tool options available to you.
- Alex2, on 12/23/2007, -3/+4Looked at the panorama plugin, doesn't look like it supports adjusting for lens effect for stitching - basically a primitive 'move 8 layers around manually' tool.
I'll stick with my commercial solution. - inactive, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Nice list........
- MrDarkSim, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1There is a couple of plugins that I use on this page:
http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/
Especially the .dds plugin - inactive, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1666 DIGGS
- schestowitz, on 12/23/2007, -7/+8There are also tools that enable you to add Photoshop plugins on hooks. Hardcore Photoshoppers tend not to know this.
- jarsonic, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Does anyone remember the Photostack plugin? http://www.dotsphinx.com/software/photostack/
I love that one, though it seems like it needs a little bit of editing to get it to work in the newest GIMP. Anyone up to the task? ;) - sirhomer, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1This guy is SPAMMING. And I'm not telling people what they can say and can't, that's Digg's right. This is their website of course. And according to Digg's Term of Service spamming is against the rules. This guy consistently spams his software in dozens of articles. I'm tired of it.
- cdmarcus, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Ugh, it would be nice if more of them included binaries for Linux rather than just sources + Windows binaries.
- ericbramlett, on 12/23/2007, -0/+1Great list - thanks! I'm just starting to learn GIMP, and will definitely incorporate these.
- fyngyrz, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Maybe, if you can't do your job without violating someone else's property, you're not legitimately qualified for your job and should be fired in favor of someone who didn't harm others in the course of their education.
Maybe you should have found the gimp, or paintshop, or winimages, or any one of a number of other tools and learned how to do what they offer and become flexible - then, when presented with Photoshop, you wouldn't whine like a little bitch about "aw, I can't FIND how to scale an image!" "The main window background color is CONFUSING me!" The MENUS are different!" "The ICONS look old!"
Seriously, every time I hear someone say that Photoshop is "the professional tool you MUST have", I know I've found someone who wants me to THINK they're a professional, but is really just barely competent in the first place.
Little bitches. :-) - jtxx000, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1http://gimp-plug-ins.sourceforge.net/fourier/home. ...
Wooo.... now I can take the Fourier transform of my cat. - makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1I liked it, actually. You might get modded down because of the zealous nature of some diggers, but it's nice, especially considering the amount of time you've been using Gimp.
(By the way, Inkscape is, in fact, better for vector stuff like that. But, as you've proven, there's more than one way to skin a cat.) - adison, on 01/29/2008, -0/+0Is gimp good for experts or can a novice understand and use it without too much trouble? The plugins look great and can be an advantage if you have time to learn and use them. Right off the bat there are some I would use every day. - http://www.ctmf.edu
- kalphegor, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1But, where's the plugin to make it Photoshop?
- condormcs, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1sure...digg me down...but you know its true!
- ever, on 12/23/2007, -5/+5.. And we who work in the industrial & graphic design business would suck in what we do if we wouldn't have had the opportunity to hone our skills at home with a pirated version during studies, before moving on to using a legal version :). I totally agree with piracy being wrong (at least to some extent) but phew, in my field of work the guys who kick ass in 2d, 3d and product design have ALL used pirated software at some point :). And honestly Photoshop does not cost and arm and a leg; it's a _great_ tool, an industry standard and well worth the money :). GIMP is great but Adobe just happens to rule the industry. I do use GIMP too but not for anything work related. Can't wait to see what GIMP will be like in a few years' time. I just don't get all the Photoshop VS GIMP stuff.. And I totally agree with sirhomer about the zealot thing; sometimes these GIMP threads seem a lot like console fanboy type flamewars :). Probably some bad English here, sorry, I'm not a native speaker. Bear/beer/bare with me!
- stopbrorape, on 12/23/2007, -2/+2give gimp a break though, it's free.
- fyngyrz, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1Look at you, telling people what they can say and what they can't. Are you some kind of old school soviet mole or something? You can say what you want, but he can't? If you don't want to look at his link, just don't ***** look. You can even - gasp - Digg Him Down! Me, I was interested to see it. Just because you're OK with open source but have some kind of a stick up your ass for commercial apps doesn't mean everyone else does, some of us are already out of our mom's basements and working for a living, you know. Why should open source get a free pass on Digg but commercial apps not? You don't think the OS people are getting what they want? They are - they're interested in distributing what they have, sometimes in credit, and *they get it when these posts appear*, chum.
- fyngyrz, on 12/24/2007, -2/+1I'll stick with my app that has the ability to arbitrarily position any number of layers, lens (and otherwise warp) them nondestructively, give me complete or partial results with or without panning -- and that's without even nodding in the general direction of panoramas, that's just stuff that's built in as general tools. But wait - it isn't Photoshop, and it isn't open source, so... it's time for a digging down. ;-) Go, PROFESSIONALS!

What is Digg?
