Top 21 Linux Games Of 2007
linuxgames07.blogspot.com — Below are addictive 3d games for linux users to fill their time with. These games are really good and some have won awards or have been featured on magazines. Most of it is cross platform and free. You don ’t have to use ‘Wine’ to be able to play as they come with Linux installers.
- 1101 diggs
- digg it
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -16/+28That's an excellent list, which is probably worth dividing into "Free" and "Commercial". Recently, many more games (FPSs included) were ported to Linux or their makers expressed the intent to do so. It must have something to do with wide OEM support, which marks a trend. Not to mention entire nations that go in this direction... "Linux is good for everything but games" is pure FUD. You just need to choose the _Linux_ games and not just pick an arbitrary Windows game off the shelf.
- atdigg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33Where is Unreal Tournament? That's one of the best games I played on Linux.
- UberNick, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2No Armagetron either?!
- konspence, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Doom 3, too.
- MrPig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6UT; Ahh epic games always supporting the Linux community. WE LOVE YOU - NOW WHERE IS UT 3
- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3How is this a good list? #6 is a game I played in 1997 on Windows 95, and the screenshot looks EXACTLY the same as it did when I got bored of it then.
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Tux Racer is an honorary member of any Linux Games list. When we've taken over the world and you have Tux portraits staring at you from every wall, then you will be glad that Tux Racer is still around.
- HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18If you arbitrarily pick a game off the shelf, the chance of it supporting Linux is slim. I love linux, but I'm going to buy the games I want to play, and while I wish they'd run on Linux, the choice of game vastly trumps the choice of OS to run it. If it didn't, why would I care to buy ANY game in the first place?
"Linux is good for everything but games" is ONLY pure FUD if the shortcoming being referenced is technical merit. But Linux is largely unsupported by the gaming industry, and that's the bottom line. When I want to play Rise of Nations, 9 million "alternative" RTS games still won't be Rise of Nations, and if I don't like those alternatives, there's no point in playing them at all.
This isn't a gimp vs photoshop kind of situation (where if necessary, I can get by with any product as long as I accomplish whatever it is I must), it's a "entertainment I want" vs "not the entertainment I want" situation, and humoring the alternative is pointless unless you happen to like it just as much, which is exactly never true. - Buckiller, on 10/10/2007, -13/+4Linux is good for everything but games. All the games that I enjoy are not on the list. The ones on the list that i played seem old and lack anything innovative.
- kent1146, on 10/10/2007, -8/+27"Linux is good for everything but games" is pure FUD. You just need to choose the _Linux_ games and not just pick an arbitrary Windows game off the shelf.
Perhaps it's just me, but when the "Top 21 Games" list includes Second Life and Tux Racer, it tells me that the Linux fanboys are just holding on a little too tightly to their beloved OS.- rpgmaker, on 10/10/2007, -11/+6What? That list sucks dude. I use Linux but I know that it sucks at games. The only thing that saves me is that I only play UT1999 with some friends and WINE just work with that :)
- andycr512, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Uh, you don't need Wine to play UT'99.
- rpgmaker, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I know, but I have the windows version and it works pretty well so why bother?
- kent1146, on 10/10/2007, -12/+3Lol, rpgmaker.. we were +4 / +1 just a second ago. Some Linux fan-tard dugg both of us down.
- Fritzed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Unreal Tournament runs natively in Linux, why would you use wine?
- HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1When I tried to install UT on Ubuntu, I spent a day trying to find what I needed to run the install process, and anything i could find was broken. In the end, I gave up. It's not exactly supported anymore. Which sucks, because I still play it a lot, and like it way better than the newer variants.
- rpgmaker, on 10/10/2007, -11/+6What? That list sucks dude. I use Linux but I know that it sucks at games. The only thing that saves me is that I only play UT1999 with some friends and WINE just work with that :)
- HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Of course, widespread Linux support by the gaming industry WOULD be awesome, and hopefully the trends toward that end continue. But while I favor Linux support in my game purchasing decisions, the current playing field equates "I buy Linux games only" to "I don't get to game any more."
I strongly avoid any applications that are not OS-agnostic (note this sword cuts both ways...the software I use had better damn well go where I go, wherever that may be). But I can only do so because productivity and multimedia based apps actually have some degree of interchangeability and there are (usually) enough options to allow that criterion while satisfying most others, both points being a stark contrast against the gaming scene. I also do so because I expect to be able to use my computer the same way between various environments...that's simply a non issue with games, which completely invent their own interface anyway. When you're playing a game, you usually can't even TELL what OS you're on, so it really only matters if you can't use the OS you need.
I want games to support Linux, but it's STRICTLY a matter of principle. Necessity, proprietary fears, and even convenience aren't really factors at all. Who cares if Windows is a proprietary mess when all you need it for is gaming? If it ever goes asplode, the industry will move on, and I'll go with it. I reserve my righteous political rage for...well...important stuff. - kretik, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Yes, any list that includes Tux Racer as a serious game deserves all the accolades you give it.
- slythfox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Especially a 2001 game in a 2007 list.
Tux Racer is pretty awesome. There's a new team working on a fork right now to improve it. In a years time the game might actually be classified as a more serious game, despite it's family/child audience approach.
- slythfox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Especially a 2001 game in a 2007 list.
- keyo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm glad they didn't use the number 10. I'm so ***** sick of these top # things. It's not news bury it.
- atdigg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33Where is Unreal Tournament? That's one of the best games I played on Linux.
- statix, on 10/10/2007, -44/+12Linux has games?
- friendlyman, on 10/10/2007, -9/+22Leave linux alone! How ***** dare anyone out there make fun of linux after all it has been through! Anyone that has a problem with teh linux you deal with me!
- troye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Ever hear of SCO, don't mess with the penguin!
- futureisours, on 10/10/2007, -60/+8ohhh lynx has 21 games!!11 including forzen bubble! i'm going to buy lynx computer now!! who needs windoez?! LOL
- oneoverzero, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Lynx is a web browser.
- madm0nk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21One day when you reach the ripe old age of 12 you might realize how stupid that comment was.
- Tryleph, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Also Lynx is a console from Atari.
BTW, futureisours, the "Check Spelling" button... use it! - ohsin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i hope future is not yours.
- WhiteHamster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that wasn't even good fake stupid if thats what you were going for
- TenebrousX, on 10/10/2007, -16/+5I like how every game is number 1
- tchon92, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm no..
most of these games have plain looking graphics
especially americas army which is a total copy of counter strike - konspence, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3He probably couldn't choose which one he liked best.
And did nobody RTFA? I don't see why tenebrousx got dugg down.
- tchon92, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm no..
- Obligation, on 10/10/2007, -4/+45Pretty cool. I'll be installing at least one of those FPSs tonight. But Tux Racer? Seriously?
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Might not be for you but 6-12 years old kids love it. The latest version is "Extreme Tux Racer" which have better graphics I think.
- obxjdt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8It might be for kids, but have you ever tried it? It can be quite addicting.
- jambarama, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah this is a good roundup, but there is nothing "2007" about most of these games. Tuxracer has been around forever, as have most of these others. Some may have made notable upgrades, but that wasn't mentioned.
If you wanted a "best so far" roundup, I'd say you missed some biggies: doom 3, quake 4, and ut2k7. If you wanted "best free ones so far," I'd still say some stuff like legends and even neverputt/ball probably should have made it above tux racer. - twrife, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Although the graphics are not great, try AssaultCube or Sauerbraten.
- carl25, on 10/10/2007, -10/+1isn't orange box coming to linux ?
- WhiteHamster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what you're thinking of is how steam is hiring some people to port windows games over to linux, specifically nothing has been announced though, you misheard
- crackedplastic, on 10/10/2007, -7/+36Inaccurate - the current version of America's Army is 2.8.2 and is for WINDOWS ONLY. It hasn't been updated for either Linux or Mac for a few years now, which is too bad. It was fun when it was entirely cross-platform.
- benplaut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And also warsow instead of warsaw.
- DjOverEZ, on 10/10/2007, -15/+42Subsequently they're THE 21 Linux games of 2007.
- kent1146, on 10/10/2007, -13/+3More like, THE 21 Linux games. Haven't you noticed how "21" is kind of a random number for a "Top X" list?
- EbilPhish, on 10/10/2007, -7/+7they're also THE 21 Linux games of 2006, 2005 and 2004
- AaronMT, on 10/10/2007, -7/+34Why must Tux Racer always be listed?
- kent1146, on 10/10/2007, -11/+14Because there are so few games on Linux, it has to be there to inflate the list. Wouldn't be a very good list if it was "Top 3 Linux Games".
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Heh, trollin' the ol' threads, eh? (judging by last 2 comments)
- slythfox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's an old game. But this IS a 2007 list. The new fork recently started, Extreme Tux Racer, may actually earn to be on such a list, in time.
Edit: Where's OpenLieroX
- kent1146, on 10/10/2007, -11/+14Because there are so few games on Linux, it has to be there to inflate the list. Wouldn't be a very good list if it was "Top 3 Linux Games".
- mbthompson, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21Tux Racer? Are you kidding me? That game is fun for about 15 seconds.
- IceZZ, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11Have you ACTUALLY PLAYED Tux Racer? Tux racer has realistic damage models, bump-map textures and a high-powered rendering engine. Just like Windows is so far behind in technology, it will take the competitors years to reach the degree of sophistication of Tux. Have you bothered to look at the high-res textures on the feet of tux? There is nothing like it on Windows. So get off your high horse and actually PLAY it for a while and you will see what makes it a step above (two steps even) above anything in the market. THAT is why it ends up on the list, year after year, and it will continue to do so until those lazy Windows game writers stop producing Bioshock and Gears of War and make something awesome like Tux.
Sheesh.

- momsshizzle, on 10/10/2007, -40/+2How about the Top 21 Windows Games Of 2007? Buried for Linsux.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Do you have some sort of macro that automatically replace Windows with Linux and add Linsux at the end? All your ***** sound exactly the same.
- konspence, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12That comment really opened my eyes as to what a bad operating system Linux is. What a compelling argument.
- madm0nk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14How about the Top 21 Idiots of 2007 ..... I'll start.
#1. momsshizzle
.. - canthraxp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Did you got raped by a guy dressed as a penguin? Or you are an *****?
Either way, keep it to yourself. - Tryleph, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I´m not a Linux fan, but, go impale yourself with a copy of Vista.
- bob.os, on 10/10/2007, -10/+9Dug entirely for the "Wow! Games for Linux?!?!?" factor.
- BZKyle, on 10/10/2007, -8/+11www.bzflag.org
Very addictive... - TheWriteGuy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5FlightGear and TORCS are surprisingly kick-ass simulators.
- IceZZ, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Oh yeah, TORCS rocks. I love the block-shaped cars, and the paper-thin trees. Just excellent, in the same way an aged fine wine tastes better each year.
- sremick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4TORCS is messed up. I've tried it on many computers, *nix and Windows, and the controls just aren't right. I think it has to do with the throttle jumping right from 0 to 100% when you press the key, and nothing in-between (unlike steering). Makes the car impossible to control.
FlightGear is pretty cool though, even if the graphics are sometimes a tad buggy.
- MrTea, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5Tux Racer (Planet Penguin Racer) sucks! It isn't even a racing game, it's just Tux tobogganing down a slope. BOOOOORING!
- slythfox, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Uh... Tux Racer? Seriously. There's been 3 forks since, then. The latest, Extreme Tux Racer, had it's initial release just a few days ago!
- IceZZ, on 10/10/2007, -8/+0Speak for yourself. Tux Racer rules. I'll bet you are some Amped 3 player or something. Amped can't hold a flame to Tux Racer.
- slythfox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Somehow I have a feeling Amped 3 isn't ported to Linux. :P
I'm just confused that an older game made the 2007 list, yet the actual 2007 version did not.
- slythfox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Somehow I have a feeling Amped 3 isn't ported to Linux. :P
- IceZZ, on 10/10/2007, -8/+0Speak for yourself. Tux Racer rules. I'll bet you are some Amped 3 player or something. Amped can't hold a flame to Tux Racer.
- BostonLow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3No Introversion games eh.
- thecosmicpope, on 10/10/2007, -10/+11I'm not putting down Linux here, but this list just stinks of a "Look! We can do what Windows can do!" blog entry by some random fanboy. Americas Army doesn't work with the latest version, Tux Racer and Frozen Bubble are just desperation and a good handful of those look really poor.
Can hardly blame the operating system for 1 blog post, but that's a pretty poor list.- IceZZ, on 10/10/2007, -11/+6>I'm not putting down Linux here, but this list just stinks of a "Look! We can do what Windows can do!" blog entry by some random fanboy.
This is what Linux is about, copying Windows. You haven't figured that out yet?- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Yes, all innovation that goes into Linux comes directly from MS code
- Bamborzled, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Copying Windows? And where did Windows get their idea of, well, windows? The Mac.
Of course, the Mac got their idea of windows from Xerox, but you get my point. Windows isn't entirely original either.
- CatalystGhost, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9We can't help it if people aren't willing to go with the free stuff yet. But there are a lot of advantages to using Linux as a development base that people don't consider, not least of which is that it costs nothing to get developer's rights to it or anything like that, since it's free and open. Additionally, the latest OpenGL is looking to be much more capable than DirectX10, but no one really notices that...

- lngarrett, on 10/10/2007, -9/+7Psh - I'll get them when they port to Windows.
- T8erT0T, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Say what you want about Tux Racer. My gripe goes to Second Life for being on the list.
- subotaj, on 10/10/2007, -23/+5This is 2007! we live in the future
and Linux have 21 games!
muhahahha so poor... Who use this ***** os?
Leopard rules!- pHr34kY, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19OMG Leopard must have about 24 games! (25 if you include photoshop)
- Greywhind, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Notice the word "Top," not "Only."
Oh, and I, along with an extremely large number of other people, use Linux. And Mac. Never Windows. Oh, and I'm a gamer. - Tryleph, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5What an *****...
- sin2051, on 10/10/2007, -12/+6Another bi-monthly list of the lousy Linux games we already know about. Nice. Hey, how about the retards making these lists include some original, quality games instead of the same tired shooters every time?
- Chandon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Shooters *never* get tired. They were the best genre in 1977 with Spacewar and that's never changed since.
- damentz, on 10/10/2007, -9/+6Oh wow, this is the first list of games where the author actually tried to put together a coherent list of GOOD games.
- IceZZ, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1Damn straight. These are the best Linux has to offer.
- mbthompson, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2Which isn't saying much.
- IceZZ, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Zactly.
- mbthompson, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2Which isn't saying much.
- IceZZ, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1Damn straight. These are the best Linux has to offer.
- madm0nk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Second Life is a game? I always thought is was some sort of escape from reality.
- birrioso, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14they forgot Unreal tournament III
- coredump0x01, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Don't forget Legends http://legendsthegame.net which is a free (as in beer) Tribes 1 and 2 clone that runs on Linux.
Also covered here:
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Legends_the_game_--_Am ...
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Legends_The_Game - Cockslap, on 10/10/2007, -6/+6thats about 10 more games then the mac got.
- obxjdt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I can run 90% of windoze games on Linux. If it's not ported to Linux, than chances are you can run it with wine.
- Tryleph, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1And the point is?...
- silencerar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4it's THAN
- gcauthon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Inaccurate, these games are not from 2007. Tux Racer was released in 2000. All of the games I checked were released before 2007.
- slythfox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The Extreme Tux Racer fork was released a few days ago. Planet Penguin Racer was released 2006 (last release).
- reyalp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Except for ET:QW.....but it hasn't been released for Linux! hahahahahahahahhahaha
- x788, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17It's Warsow, not Warsaw.
- r5a2k3, on 10/10/2007, -19/+3They look like *****. Glad I'm not using Linux.
- digitallysick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11where is sauerbraten??
- p0ss, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Why are they all shooters? Are there any good rpgs or rts's that don't look ten years old? anyone?
- Greywhind, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8WoW works on Linux with Wine, for one.
- themathninja, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5They forgot Nethack! Not only is it one of the best games of all time, but it's also one of the games that is quintessentially Linux.
- argusbargus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I haven't played that since I had SCO Xenix on my 286.
- aidanr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13***** list
a) There's maybe 2 or 3 games there that were released in 2007
b) Quakewars has not been released yet, and no beta/demo for Linux yet (wine doesn't count here)
c) No Penumbra Overture?- jrwr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1and i know they had a mod for Wolf:ET
but its still a kickass game, and what about UT2k4
- jrwr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1and i know they had a mod for Wolf:ET
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Frozen Bubble = funnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn (+ 3 n's)
- 21chrisp, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11You could also call it the best linux games of 2006... and 2005.. and 2004.. and 2003... ...
- slythfox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, pretty much. And it's lacking a lot of games.
I'm happy to see Frets on Fire on there, though. It's a pretty decent game.- johnstondee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I was looking for frets on fire too. List a bit outdated.
- slythfox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, pretty much. And it's lacking a lot of games.
- osoroco, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3even tho there's no linux demo for ET:QW
why is it in fourth position, rather than first second and third?!?!?!?!?
fine, bury me, i don't care - neonpulse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Tremulous is great, but old. These aren't '07 games!
OpenArena should have made the list since it's frequently updated and loads of fun.
Lugaru is another great game, but commerical.
@aidanr- There have been way more than 2 or 3 games released this year.- argusbargus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1There are other games besides OpenArena?
- archer75, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Lame list. And didn't America's Army stop supporting linux? As in there would be no future updates or releases for linux.
- Nefi, on 10/10/2007, -14/+2Linux has games? Buried as Inaccurate.
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3They totally forgot "Hunt the Wumpus"!
- Flamekebab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6To be perfectly honest, that list was bollocks.
Why make a list of 21 "games" (Second Life? FFS..) when you've not enough content for it?
Why make it "of 2007" when so so many of them are older than that?
(For the record, I use linux for everything. Love it. But sort the gaming aspect out, people!)- coredump0x01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Theres a lot more games that he/she could've mentioned in place of Second Life, Tux racer, etc. Penumbra Overture? Sauerbraten? Unreal Tournament *? Postal 2? Tremulous? Legends? Quake 4? Doom 3? Open Arena? Tribal Trouble? H-Craft? Irrlamb? Beyond the red line? That does it, I need to make one of these lists.
- MrSunshine, on 10/10/2007, -12/+4Top 10 Freeware Linux Games of 2008:
1. Tetris
2. Pacman
3. 3D Tetris
4. Paxman
5. Lintris
6. Tuxman
7. Tetrize
8. Pokeman
9. Tutrix
10. 2-Playtris - smek2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1An excellent list? It's Nexius and Alien Arena all over again. It seems theres a total of only 21 games for Linux anyway, so why bother making a best of list"? I'm tired of hearing "nuhu ther ARE Linux games, look..." only to see a list of the same old games over and over again. Nice to see that there are 3 FPS shooters based on what looks like the old Quake engine.

- Giulio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Your 2007 list has Quake Wars... But Unreal Tournament 3 will appear in retail store this year too!
- RonnieW, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6ppl there IS an ET:QW beta and a demo for linux, you just have to be a little resourcefull, what i did was find an ftp where you can dload the windows demo, login anonymous and just browse the suff thats on it.
example:
1. logon anonymously to: ftp://ftp.multiplay.co.uk/
2. navigate to: /pub/games/fps/enemyterritory_quakewars/demo/linux/
voila :)- argusbargus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@RonnieW, the only file there is "ETQW-demo-server.2.x86.run" - that's to run the ETQW server (not the client) in linux.
