- sirhomer, on 04/02/2008, -0/+38The IBM adverts are really great. I actually remember seeing the long one on CNN a few times. What's great about them is they manage to embody the philosophy of free software within them, and not just Linux itself. They have this almost spiritual tone to them which is very hard to pull off in a typical commerical. They convey a message and not just a product.
- jaybol, on 04/02/2008, -1/+34it sounds cool to hit play on the first one and the second one at the same time
- powatom, on 04/03/2008, -1/+28Linux is big business for...well, big businesses. Much of the internet is hosted and organised through Linux machines, and there are companies which sell Linux support contracts to businesses who use Linux. Some distributions of Linux charge you (but most don't), just like you have to buy Windows.
It's a myth that Linux makes no money. It is true that it is mostly free (including most of the applications you'd want to use) for normal desktop users. Only if you have very, very special needs are you likely to need to pay for Linux. - werewolves, on 04/02/2008, -0/+24My all time favorites, the second one is the best. Pleather, LOL.

- isntreal, on 04/03/2008, -0/+20The popular misconception about open source software is that everything is always free. Companies typically aren't charging for the software itself, but rather the implementation and support of the system. For example, if I were to create a piece of software under GPL I would be obligated to share the source and offer my software for free to others, however I do reserve the right to sell my software in a easy to use installation package, sell installation services, and tech support. The software itself remains free, the services associated with the software can be priced.
- jacekpoplawski, on 04/02/2008, -2/+21My fav was always the IBM ad, absolutely a must for each true fan.
- MarkKezner, on 04/03/2008, -0/+14Linux has corporate backing from companies such as IBM. They make money off of Linux by selling it to companies, often as a server solution. They also sell tech support. Each company does it differently.
I really doubt Linux users would be able to stomach ads integrated into their OS. - ralphthemagi, on 04/03/2008, -0/+14IBM ran a Linux campaign for about a year. Maybe longer.
- trogdoor, on 04/03/2008, -0/+13It's always Free as in Freedom, but not always free as in beer.
- ralphthemagi, on 04/03/2008, -0/+13IBM's Linux ads were the best:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=RJ3eq_lKHFk - powatom, on 04/03/2008, -0/+13It wouldn't make much difference, we'd just remove them ourselves anyway :)
- jcannonb, on 04/02/2008, -0/+13The IBM commercials remind me of Final Fantasy. That by the way is wonderful for me.
- drguerra, on 04/03/2008, -3/+16Uhm, how can it be consumerist if it's free? Linux is the anti-consumerist. Are you mentally deficient?
- KloroFormd, on 04/03/2008, -0/+12They'd just compile without the ad support.
- EvaBehemoth, on 04/03/2008, -0/+11Is it wrong that some of these commercials move me as much as they do?
Linux seems to embody the progress that humanity needs. - JasonHaley, on 04/03/2008, -1/+10Whenever people show me those annoying Apple Vs. PC commercials or try to get me to debate with them, I just respond "I use Linux" and 90% of the time it shuts the person up.
As a strictly-Linux user, I use AdBlock Plus and Pidgin to avoid MSN ads... the best kind of ad for Linux is the anti-advert. Linux is not annoying, that's what sold me.
Don't get me wrong, if this is what it takes to get all those people who love watching ads on board..then great. But for me the greatest advert was its silence in an over-hyped OS war. - bradleyland, on 04/03/2008, -0/+8I think you meant -2147483648.
- SQLserver, on 04/03/2008, -0/+8You have no idea what you are talking about. The new Star Wars, Pirates of the Carribean, Harry Potter, Shrek, and mainly Titanic.

Video/CGI on Linux with Cinerella and Blender is brilliant. - inactive, on 04/02/2008, -1/+8nine and ten outshone the others, great ads well done
- StormyAaron, on 04/03/2008, -0/+7There is no "official" Linux, all distros are made by groups of people who do it on their own free time and their own money, or with commercial backing from for-profit companies like IBM or Novell. Most Distros offer paid support (mostly large for-profit companies would use paid support) or free community based support. Most linux TV ads would be from companies like IMB, where others will just be made by linux supporters on their free time and upload them to sites like Youtube.
- MarkKezner, on 04/03/2008, -0/+7Not proprietary is not the same thing as not commercial.
- andycr512, on 04/03/2008, -0/+6It's actually Cinelerra. I don't mean to correct you, just wanted to give the right name in case anyone wants to look it up.
Both Blender and Cinelerra are somewhat hard to learn but incredibly powerful once you do. - 22magnum, on 04/03/2008, -1/+7have you been living in a cave? your social skills suck.
- quantumduck, on 04/03/2008, -1/+7Linux has TEN commercials?
- jjustin01, on 04/03/2008, -0/+5Number 2 is almost spiritual.
- isntreal, on 04/02/2008, -2/+7Commercials I can digg.
- rkef, on 04/03/2008, -1/+6Is Linux really a mute albino kid who watches TV all day?
- daftman, on 04/03/2008, -0/+4these are corporate commercial
not one that direct to joe six pack with 10seconds attention span. - HonoredMule, on 04/03/2008, -0/+4The first one really surprised me with the substance of its message, and how effectively it was delivered. I'll take that over Apple's comically-aimed Windows-bashing OS personifications any day.

choke on that - drguerra, on 04/03/2008, -2/+6Huzzah for LINUX! There should be a marketing campaign, a serious one to promote Linux. People can donate money to pay for ads to increase the widespread use of Linux. I'm glad IBM is promoting it.
- ronaldmonster, on 04/03/2008, -2/+6I didn't believe you until I did it. EVERYONE DO IT NAO!
- LinuxGalore, on 04/03/2008, -0/+4I saw this nice Linux add yesterday on youtube aka Flying Penguins..

- bs0l, on 04/03/2008, -2/+5My first thought: Linux has commercials?
- bradleyland, on 04/03/2008, -2/+5Some made the hairs on my arms stand up.
- JohnsonGotOwned, on 04/02/2008, -3/+6Please excuse an idiotic teen's question- how does Linux make money to produce commercials? Did they stick in ads or something?
- 3MM3, on 04/03/2008, -0/+3Anyone have a mirror?
- dusingaz, on 04/03/2008, -0/+3Commercials are not 3 minutes long, get to the point.
- LastDitchHero, on 04/03/2008, -0/+3Is the Chinese commercial for Red Flag Linux?

Yeah, they're from Novell, but they're still humorous. - tehbored, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2You can still buy them on their site.
- ArcOrion, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2Well, I must say, if Benjamin Sisko thinks I need to use Linux, what choice do I have?
- alexforcefive, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2If only my flash plugin didn't fall over when pages have multiple embedded videos :(
BUT APART FROM THAT, linux is great =D
(it's not really linux's fault) - JasonHaley, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2Yeah like I said, only 90% of the time do people shut up. The other 10% some random fanboy responds with a fact that has little do with a great OS.
So what if Walmart removed Linux? How does that mean I should go buy a Mac so that I can be part of a marketshare that's only 3% greater? And more importantly, what does that have to do OS security/functionality/ speed?
I actually agree with you on one point: The only thing Apple is better at is commercials. - happytedium, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2Could be because I just woke up, but anyone else read the title as "Top 10 Linux Commands"?
- crossmr, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2No..some of those aren't genuine commercials..and that damn kill bill one sucked whatever it was.
- jokeoftheday, on 04/03/2008, -1/+3check this one... someone posted it http://www.sorryiatethebeans.com/item/5QHCMQS37S2P ...
