- nerdism, on 10/11/2007, -5/+90What a lovely firewall/nameserver it would make..
- breadtk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+63So what their saying is this box can be powered by a hamster wheel and a small generator? rofl. I'm going to get one and make a video of it!
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -8/+54Runs linux . doh. like it was going to run windows vista ultimate.
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -2/+42you like to carry nameservers in your pocket?
I think we have found the ultimate geek. - eggloaf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36Jesus, my last computer cost me $1400 to build, and this computer, the size of a book and with a price tag of under $300 matches it in every category... except for harddrive size, which it beat. It really makes you think about how far we have advanced technologically in just seven years.
- d1ZZy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27does anybody know what linux distro it comes with? Or is it a self build distro?
- hockey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18500 MHz is perfect for a home based server. No one said you had to play Oblivion on it.
- IcerC, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Would this be a perfect music player? 24/7 and low power..
Anything I am missing?
The G5 imac we have now is starting to freeze up on a daily basis. - Spuy767, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Did you build your last computer in 1998?
- ArthurSucks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18DIY laptop anyone?
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20digg should have a Mark as troll button so that people dont waste energy on these posts.
- mossblaser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Yeah sure, I'd like a PC that size with 80gb ram and 2TB flash drive and gaming graphics, yeah under $150 - yeah - course that's gona happen!
- DarthDubbya, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17MAME console anyone?
- Shando, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16I ran XP Home edition just fine on my old 1GHz 128mb RAM celeron just fine about 5 years ago, and I could run Counter Strike 1.5. Wow those were the days :D
- rizla420, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Anyone think this would make a good car PC? Throw it in your glove box, set it and forget it? You think you could keep this PC on the whole time without draining your battery? Eliminate boot time so your always able to access it.
- ahvi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14I'd love to see these small cheap computers applied in the kitchen as a secondary quick computer or in the bedroom or bathroom... So many options.
- eggloaf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+141999 or early 2000 I believe, but you're on the right track.
- Drgn547, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17Unless you're really seeking that small desktop footprint, or you're OCD about power consumption and/or fan noise, then keep looking - I just ordered a box from newegg (to put together myself) with AMD X2 3800+, 1GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, onboard video & audio, DVD-RW, and a mid tower with ROOM IN IT for $290 with shipping - PLENTY for running Linux or any other OS for that matter.
- sacherjj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14This is much better than my old and noisy AMD K2 500 Mhz based Domain controller and file server. Just because you drank the kool-aid that Microsoft sold you about your computer being too slow (to run Vista), doesn't keep the rest of us from doing great things with modest hardware.
- j128, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Do I get to be the first to suggest a beowulf cluster of these?
- cruzlee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Hamster Redundancy. Cool.
- meltingrobot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12***** trolls!
- btgoss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Don't be a hater... you never know when you will have to resolve IP addresses into domain names while on the road... why just last week...
yeah... very geeky... but cool.... - ScottMaximus1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Redundant Array of Inexpensive Hamsters - RAIH
- Murdats, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12record the video onto this computer :)
- Spuy767, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Just a bit of advice, the only thing I've ever seen amke a Mac freeze up with any regularity is overheating, either the ventilation ports are clogged or one of your active cooling devices has failed.
- felyduw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I'm thinking bit torrent and storage... I'm buying it soon.
- WAPCE, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Great deal. I'm always on the look-out to upgrade my FreeBSD firewall/NAT box with something more slim and lean on power, this one is tough to beat.
- dinergy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9its application as a small home server is attractive. i run a full server at home right now and it eats up power, space, creates heat, etc. for the amount of users (mostly friends, some clients) i have and the work it does, this would be perfect. a full system is simply overkill.
plus, you could get more than just one and cluster them for improved performance. this box is still cheaper than buying and building a mini-itx box.
for a small linux server, you don't need much more power. on a standard web server, a fast processor is going to be underutilized anyway. - irgeorge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8No, thats just antagonistic fanboy paranoia you've got.
- MuadDave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9The difference between this mini PC and the gumstix is that the build-in USB ports are HOST, not CLIENT.
- sacherjj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I imaging your will want just a little more processing power for rendering 3D in Blender, but it might Blend.
- Solkre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Low spec components also have low power and heat dissipation requirements. Even if you could fit high-end components into a box that small you'd overheat them before your OS loaded.
- billbacon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I was thinking the exact same thing. It's a perfect firewall. Totally silent and you don't get nailed for all that upgrade crap.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Does it have the power to record video?
Maybe you will need to put 2 hamsters in the wheel to make sure. - yagran, on 10/15/2007, -0/+7sorry to say it but a hamster cant produce that power :(
" was able to get Skippy the hamster to produce peaks of about 150 milliamps of current at 3 volts, and 3 * 0.150 = 0.45 Watts. However, this was like running up hill for him -- he wouldn't run for very long before getting tired. So I experimented, and found he would run for his usual 3-4 hours per night if I turned the output down to 50 milliamps -- like running up a hill, but not as steep. So, thats 0.050 * 3 = 0.15 Watts, * 4 hours = 0.6 Watt/hours per night. That's the same unit of measure as your family's power bill each month, except your power bill is in kiloWatt hours -- one kW/hr = 1000 Watt hours, to give you an idea of how much power he could make.

and i was getting so excited. dammit - SneezingTree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7It's powered by a single 5v connection, so therefore we might be able to have a usb-powered pc! :P Well, it's pretty unlikely, but it's a cool concept.
- RussellDovey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I think you are. Guess digg really isn't slashdot.
- ScottMaximus1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Does your Pocket PC have 2 NICs, VGA Out, and use 5 Watts of Electricity?
I didn't think so - geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Pick two of those wants and we'll talk. And it's not likely you'll get any kind of SSD for less than $200 _alone_. Keep dreaming.
- Aremith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7TFA doesn't say what distro it comes with.
- fsnuffer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7If it can run small instances of Snort, mysql, named, and ASSP I am set.
- jadenguy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7i'm not positive, but i think that's what it was made for.
- OrangeTide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7carbon neutral? so you don't eat carbon-based food to power yourself riding that bike? I take it you don't exhale either?
- toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7well that's what he gets for being a foreigner.
I'm joking, by the way. - neodorian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I dunno. Even onboard is fine for powering a stereo. Just don't expect crazy digital surround or anything. I always just run mine into a shelf stereo anyway.
- MikeFromAmerica, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8If it runs Windows (The article says it can run XP.), it can probably run any x86 Linux distro. (So if you don't like what it comes with...)
- sirhomer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6This seems like a good choice for so many applications, and with the amount of power it uses it'll pay for itself overtime in lower electric bills. Good stuff.
- sacherjj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Funny, I use a "real" computer with just one huge slow fan and an intelligently designed case. Muted green led indicators. It really is a pleasure. Enjoy your hearing loss.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10I think you mean "duh" and it does run windows XP if you want it too.
