- ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -1/+43For the record. TimeVault works on ALL Linux distros not only Ubuntu.
- martalli, on 11/04/2008, -1/+15I am a ubuntu user, but I agree it bears repeating:
ubuntu != Linux
ubuntu < Linux
Linux = {debian, ubuntu, mepis, fedora, mandriva, suse, slackware, arch, ...} - BeShirtHappy, on 11/03/2008, -2/+16I learned this lesson the hard way once. Not a good way to learn one either. Good information -Thanks!
- wigren, on 11/03/2008, -0/+14If you're on a x64 machine and you want the latest version you'll need to resolve dependencies yourself. Check out http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=729931.
The short version is:
sudo apt-get install python2.5-dev python-nautilus python-gobject-dev python-pysqlite2 python-gamin meld
Then cd to where ever you downloaded timevault_0.7.5-1_i386.deb and run:
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture timevault_0.7.5-1_i386.deb - Wormwoods, on 11/04/2008, -2/+15TimeVault.... wonder how they came up with such a brilliant name.
- daengbo, on 11/04/2008, -2/+15The project is dead. Why promote a dead project?
- Ricochetbiscuit, on 11/03/2008, -1/+10I like it.. cool little box.
- wastern, on 11/04/2008, -0/+9the "ubuntu" name gets them more traffic
most newer users are going to google "ubuntu + backup" not "linux + backup"
just because all things are linux doesn't mean they are the same in all distros. If I was doing config for Suse I'd use the Suse name in my search as it may use YaST vs some config in Gnome. Same idea with those using Ubuntu which is the biggest distro right now - sirhomer, on 11/04/2008, -0/+8On top of it all this is Linux.com here making the "Ubuntu = Linux" mistake. You'd think if anyone they'd know better.
- markcrules, on 11/04/2008, -2/+10I am going to disagree with most people here and say it doesnt matter if people call Linux Ubuntu. Why? Well Linux is perceived to be hard, nerdy and server software, Ubuntu on the other hand looks like its an up and coming star. Silly I know, as they are one and the same, but I will take bigger market share any way I can, and it's not like Canonical is evil or anything.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+7I agree the product is great and it's just a matter of time before the market share comes
- oobuntu, on 11/04/2008, -1/+7do you know this for a fact or are just making an assumption?
- int19h, on 11/04/2008, -0/+6Real men don't take backups! Real men cry instead...
- Dinsdale77, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5It's in the vault Jerry.
- t3hbagel, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5TimeVault...by Vault-Tec?
(Ever since Fallout 3 came out, everything with the word "Vault" in it makes me think of my Pip-Boy.) - Initi8, on 11/04/2008, -8/+13To be fair, OS X and Windows have had software like this for years.
Either way, looks like a great application, anything that makes backing up easier gets a thumbs-up from me. I'm blown away by how many people just don't back up at all. - prodigitalson, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4Everyone "copies" features. The important thing is that they copy the good ones. And hopefully add some refinements along the way.
Personally though, i think ill stick with my shell scripts. All i have to do is change some of my exclude/include paths and i can use them on damn near any *nix distro installation with the general default software packages. Course it doesnt have a nice GUI and isnt as user friendly... but thats not so important to me in this case. - martalli, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4I know that. I was trying to keep it simple.
- morphie, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4You got that right.
- webcrumb, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4Real men don't make backups. They put their stuff on a public FTP site and let other people back it up for them.
- guorbatschow, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4like... chronovault?
- peestandingup, on 11/04/2008, -4/+8Could they have came up with a less than obvious rip-off of a name?
- revslaughter, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3Thanks! Totally helpful - got it up and running now.
- ArthurSucks, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3Welcome to the world of competition. Users want features. Developers make features. Every one but you is happy.

trunk Active Development
Releases 0.1
Doesn't look all that dead to me, sure there haven't been any releases, but it's still marked as active. - 0tis, on 11/04/2008, -1/+4Some suggestions:
Backup Machine
DeLorea*nix
Fluxcapacitron
AppleBox
Windows System Restore Utility
TimeBuntu
Just don't kill your grandfather, or step on any ants. - Lebrun, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3Actually, TimeVault is just a GUI for something you could do in Linux for a really long time. Way longer than the Mac 'Time Machine'.
- Canadian0207, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2i don't mean to sound like a complete noob, but can someone tell me if there is a difference between taking an image of your data and actually backing everything up? And if there is a difference, what is it?
- Zaggynl, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2An image is a different format than the original filesystem of the data, provides compression, room for comments and some even encryption.
Also allows for incremental backups where only the differences or newly changed or added files are stored. - tylerjwilk, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Just In Time is a shipping/inventory method and seems just odd to me. Time Flies.... sounds like some nostalgic indy movie about growing up in the suburbs.
- fatas, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3liar
- RobotBuddha, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3To get someone to take up development again?
- trogdoor, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3You shouldn't need to resolve dependencies yourself with --force-architecture, only with --force-all ( which includes force depends and thus means you are explicitly saying you *don't* want it to install dependencies ).
In other words, "sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture timevault_0.7.5-1_i386.deb && sudo apt-get -f install" should install it and all its dependencies. - bedouin, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3I've heard it can even format disks, even hard disks.
- KevinJim, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2I don't like TimeVault at all. Instead I use Kamion, which rulez btw.
- andycr512, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2"To be fair, OS X and Windows have had software like this for years."
So has Linux. Rdiff-backup to name only one of the many incremental backup programs Linux has had for years. If you know of anything equivalent and free for Windows, it would certainly help me when I'm using Windows. - sethisastud, on 11/04/2008, -8/+10So, it's like someone copied Time Machine, but made it really ugly and more difficult to use?
Neat! - arjie, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Don't see why they should. Remember OS X Spaces? It's a nice name, so what if it is similar to what the rest of the world call workspaces?
- wigren, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Copy/Paste is easy enough for me. I seem to remember a fruity computer maker that can't even get that right. Not mention that the software is still pre-1.0 and x64 is never as well supported.
- yellowbean1, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Actually, not at all for Linux. Mozy is Windows and Mac only.
- paulsmith288, on 11/04/2008, -2/+3time machine was sooo original.
- webcrumb, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Isn't that designed just for backing up KDE4 settings? If so it's a completely different project.
- derkles, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Timevault is a graphical configuration utility that creates cron jobs for rsync. Works real well on Arch Linux.
- newbill123, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1The name needs to change, but not due to a similarity to either Time Machine or File Vault.
The problem is that a Time Vault is difficult to get your stuff into or out of. It's only accessible during certain periods and is otherwise sealed shut. Time Capsule? no, similar problem. Don't make it sound like this is making your stuff less accessible.
How about something else like "Just In Time" or "Time Flies". The first has a nice "rescue" related connotation, while the second has all sorts of icons begging to be designed for it. - clsslc, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Mozy has been doing this for a long time (also, not just for Linux!).
http://mozy.com/ - MWeather, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1It's easier than Windows. If I need a particular .Net version installed and the app I want to install doesn't come with it, I have to do a hell of a lot more to get it, and the apps I want to use installed.
- MWeather, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1I just use backupninja with rdiff-backup or duplicity. Ncurses is all the GUI you need for a backup program.
- Lebrun, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Actually, as you can see in this article http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/01/06/svn_ ... this feature has been in linux for a lot more time than has Time Machine existed. The TimeVault app is just a GUI to use the already present tools.
