- Raydr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+55Okay, so where do you find it? If you're going to give an introduction to a product, and talk about extensions, why not also include a couple of links instead of saying something like "if you know where to find it"?
That's not how you win users.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Its a really welcome update, particularly the search functions, however they are not addressing basic fundamentals that prevent novice users from switching...
1. Making html signatures, is really hard for new users, despite the fact that thunderbird has a built in html email builder
2. Installing extensions or addons is really unintuitive, if you go to the extensions page and click "install now" it tries to install the extension into FIREFOX!
3. Relocating the email profile to another folder is still complicated.
4. The dreded empty inbox bug is still there... if you have lots of emails, and your inbox gets too large then there is a chance that your inbox will appear empty! and its a nightmare to recover the data. no warnings or anything!!
5. Your emails won't be included in the vista search....
I really want to be able to switch from outlook to thunderbird, however knowing that its a one way switch and with the above risks , I don;t want to chance it. - conradovina, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Of all the bugs you mention, the worst one would be the unintuitive addons interface.
How well does MS Outlook handle that one? - filefly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16@sheepster
Um, s/he accidentally posted duplicate comments... the proper thing to do in this scenario, since digg has no "delete comment" function (are you reading this, Kevin?) is to ask for the extraneous comments to be dugg down. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Do us all a favor, and put your computer back in the box and take it back to the store.
- firefusion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -16/+29With extensions in place, Thunderbird becomes more powerful than any other mail client. It's the same scenario with Firefox. Any functionality you want (even a calendar) is available, you just need to know where to find it.
- JohnTheJohnMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The calender extension he's talking about is called lightning and it gives Thunderbird Sunbird functionality, which is Mozilla's calender app.
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/releases/lightning0.3.1.html - Khaine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Ubuntu and now Thunderbird 2
Today is a great day! - tawt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9erm, because it's an EMAIL client?
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Simple... your not with that attitude with us.
- chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I agree. Without integration with the OS X Address Book, spell check (yes I know, it uses its own dictionary, but I would rather it use OS X's dictionary), and spotlight, I can't use Thunderbird on OS X. Simply not possible.
However, I understand the address book and spotlight integration is being worked on (I have seen several bugs in Bugzilla addressing them). Seems like activity has picked up as of late, so hopefully by version 3.0 it will be in there. - codmate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7'Lightning' is the calendar for Thunderbird.

Don't know if it works with Thunderbird 2.0. - Azr43L, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Probably something to do with "Awesome Picture of a goat!!!!!! [PIC]" and anything with Ubuntu, Digg and Apple in the title taking over the front page.
- jasz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I love Thunderbird but I still feel like Evolution (linux) has better features and better integration (with GNOME).
In any case, It's a great mail client, kudos to the dev's :) - Yogurth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Is this true about database corruption? I'm currently using Barca as eMail and sheduling/calendar/notes app but hearing about Thunderbird extensibility makes me want to switch since Barca hasn't been updated for almost full year despite some pretty annoying bugs. One thig with Barca/Pocomail though is a rock solid database format impervious to corruption(been using this combo since 2001 and still not a single glitch in that respect). If corruption happens with new Thunderbird I think I will skip it then, can't afford to lose years of correspondence.
Can anyone confirm/deny that such a bug exists in Thunderbird 2? Thx. - random19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@unknownsoldierx
In the Gmail POP3 Settings, there is an option for what to do when a message is downloaded. But it only allows you to either "Keep Gmail's Copy in the Inbox", Archive it, or delete it.
So to answer your question, no. - ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@codmate
Yes it does. I am using it in TB 2.0 now - mtonak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wish there was a way of group emails they way Gmail does its "conversations". I like being able to see all the emails in a thread form without having to jump from the inbox to sent messages, back to the inbox. If anyone knows of an extension that does this, I'd be much happier with Thunderbird.
- MickJT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The one thing that bugs me about Thunderbird, is that you cannot remove posts when in newsgroups.. Now I know it's not a physical removal, and the protocol doesn't allow this unless it's your own post and you remove it straight away, but it's really annoying to not have this feature when every other nntp client has it.
- V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I like Thunderbird but again, seriously, stop calling minor improvements 2.0 instead of 1.5x; it's the same sort of nonsense FF 2.0 did.
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I just had a problem with the corruption bug last week... It could be solved, by not prompting the user to compact the databases... and just compacting the databases once in a while of its own accord... Or perhaps giving a critical warning once a mailbox reaches a certain size...
Ideally, it would be cool if we could export files back into windows mail/outlook express format, that way we can allow our users to go back to outlook express if they are not happy.
At the moment thunderbird is being relegated to backup of my gmail account...
Don't get me wrong thunderbird 2 is a great step in the right direction, just needed to be a bigger step.. Hopefully tb3 will address my points above... - lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Just because they didn't call it "Outlook Message Pane View" doesn't mean it's not on there. If you're talking about having 3 columns, go to View->Layouts->Vertical View
Looks the same as the screenshots of Outlook when I googled it. - aurigus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow - I happened to be downloading my email since I had 4k messages waiting to be downloaded, and 30k in my inbox. I first used 1.5 to try to download them, and it was crashing. I hadn't tried 2.0 so I visited the site this morning, not knowing it had just gone out of beta. Installed it, and it had no problem downloading those messages.
For anyone having the "empty inbox" problem, this is an issue not just on 2.0 but on 1.5. It can happen if your inbox is corrupted, for example if it is being accessed/written to and Thunderbird crashes for some reason. It can be fixed by deleting the index file (the one with the .msf extension), and on next launch it will be rebuilt (it will take a few minutes if you have a lot of email). That typically fixes that problem.
Anyway Thunderbird 2.0 works great - with the exception that several of my extensions were not compatible. I would expect compatible releases to be coming out in the next few weeks.
It is a great piece of software, I'd recommend anyone who wants a desktop client (other than Outlook) to try it out! - dizzybastard, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8.. wish there were an automatic update for it aswell...
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've also been using the Lightning extension for a while, since 1.5 I believe. I upgraded to 2.0 last night and added the Google Provider extension for Google Calendar syncing. It works perfectly. I love it.
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How the hell do you have 4000 messages to download? I can see 4000 in the inbox, but damn.
- lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thats not what he means. Some nntp readers have a built in 'recall message' which sends a specially crafted messageto delete the post. TB's newsreader has the featureset of a poor newsreader from 1996.
- javaroast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sorry it's actually this bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=312025
- Scyth3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Now if only Thunderbird was installed on Ubuntu by default instead of evolution.
- lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>Thunderbird I think I will skip it then, can't afford to lose years of correspondence.
Shouldnt you be backing up your old emails? I'm if I'm afraid of losing data I dont blame the application, I blame my lack of backups.
Im not saying your should switch to anything, but putting the onus on backups/archives on the client by assuming it will never screw up seems very unfair. - jamester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Install worked great for me. I haven't used an email client in quite some time - I've been relying solely on gmail at the website. This is nice... I had no problems with installation, and setting up my gmail account was a breeze. Looks good!
- lotion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've been an avid thunderbird user for quite some time now and I must say I haven't really suffered the problems you have described (to be fair, I don't use an email signature nor have I the need for add-ons). Here are a couple of responses:
#3 Changing the profile folder is the exact same process as it is for firefox; granted, it's not the most intuitive process but it is pretty simple if you know what to do. Perhaps better documentation would address this issue (I wouldn't want anyone who couldn't follow a step-by-step for copying their profile to be doing it anyway).
#4 I personally haven't suffered this problem but I am aware of it. The workaround is to compact large folders. If you don't, there is a recovery listed here ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/Inbox_stays_blank ).
#5 Vista is still in its infancy ... I'm sure that once Microsoft realizes that non-business users (and area that the majority of Vista users fall under at the moment) would like to expand the search functionality, they'll make some developer kit available that the mozilla crowd will quickly take advantage of. - opticsnake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's interesting. With all of the freeware out there and the fact that your base computer user is becoming more and more software and net savvy, I wonder what new tricks the "big guys" will come up with in order to try to keep everyone buying their bloated products.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Outlook 2007 is a fantastic email and scheduling client, but it costs a pretty penny. I love Outlook at work but even though I own a copy I still use Thunderbird at home.
- javaroast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is a welcome update, but there are still small issues that hold Thunderbird back. Like bug 298969 when auto forwarding messages even if you set your default to plain text the auto forwarder sends the mail as an attachment. Makes it impossible to auto forward to my cell phone or pager. Good thing Gmail doesn't have this same problem. I use Thunderbird, but will be very happy when that bug gets fixed.
- bakagaigin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok, for anyone who is having this problem on Windows XP, uninstall it, back up your profile folder in C:/documents and settings/yourname/application data/thunderbird to a safe location, delete said thunderbird folder, and delete the thunderbird folder in Program Files. Install it again and copy your profile folder that you backed up back in it's original location. That worked for me.
- slipperman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does it support Exchange server?
- opticsnake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Open source software for everyone!
And let's not forget Google's Powerpoint clone release from yesterday. - pintong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"What happened to the days of digg having the news before slashdot?"
Check reddit. They're always ahead of the curve. - ace87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love thunderbird. I am really glad they finally came out with an update, it has been a while since version 1.5 came out.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WebMail - AOL/Netscape and GMail plugins updated on the authors web site, installed and working in Tbird 2.0:
http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html - kahrn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Digg seems to be slow with the news lately. This is a whole day old.
What happened to the days of digg having the news before slashdot? - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did you manually point it to your current Tbird install directory? It will not locate the 1.5.x install directory.
- jub0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wake me up when it will sync contacts with my PocketPC.
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31.5 should be 1.1. 2.0 should be 1.2. This is beyond ridiculous.
It's amazing to thinh that the difference between Mozilla (the suite) 1.6 and 1.7 is much larger than the difference between Firefox/Thunderbird 1.0 and 2.0. Same developers, completely different mindset.
Looks like they want to get to 8.0 before Microsoft... - lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is this a bug? When this happened to me it was my antivirus catching an email virus and because of how TB stores mail, it takes the file with everything.
- dpace32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Has anyone else had issues upgrading from 1.5.X? After running the install in Windows the new Thunderbird will startup but none of my old mail is there. It looks like the account settings are still in tact but everything else is missing... I tried disabling all extensions before the upgrade and still no luck! agh!
- rjregenold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thunderbird 2.0 has a nice looking "new mail" notification for Linux. It also sports some good looking icons. Thank you very much Thunderbird dev team!
- mbup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone knows if Lightning is going to work with TB2 on linux?
