- PullingTeeth, on 08/18/2008, -5/+32Linux has an ugly interface? Way to admit you know absolutely nothing about Linux and its configuration. CompizFusion can easily compete, if not beat, Aero or Mac's interface.
- neatflux, on 08/18/2008, -1/+27Ugh! What a grammar fail! I couldn't take the author seriously after (read slowly):
"People still consider Linux to Commands Line and OS meant for geeks and professionals.."
Was this written by Skwisgaar Skwigelf or what? - inactive, on 08/18/2008, -6/+30AdBlock Plus or gtfo.

I just installed linux today!
how convenient - inactive, on 08/18/2008, -2/+221. A superior OS is pure opinionated
2. Neither is the best music out there
3. Sounds like a Mac, but that has a pretty large fan base
4. You don't even realize how many different desktop environments and window managers there are do you. Far more customizable than any Windows version to the date. Oh and on top of that, there is themes for each kind. All Windows has it just that, themes.
Personally, I use Windows 2k and XP more often than I do any Unix based operating system. I can't stand when people see Linux in the wrong light. - bureksir, on 08/18/2008, -2/+19Yeah, god forbid we actually learn something new and/or useful while reading articles on the web...
- santasing, on 08/18/2008, -1/+18Why should anyone call you, or even care?
Do you mean to say that you are just a sheep who will switch if a large number of people switch. Should you just not use a system if it works for you? - mikelieman, on 08/18/2008, -7/+24I'm comfortable with the top 1% of computer users choosing to use a Linux desktop.
I'm happy to be in the top 1% of computer users. - phaedrusnz, on 08/18/2008, -0/+17there are no important windows files... but definitely back up your personal files before looking to install any operating system!
- PullingTeeth, on 08/18/2008, -1/+16How else can it become mainstream? Be happy tech articles are making its way back to the front page.
- lead2thehead, on 08/18/2008, -1/+15If you want to try out Linux, the Ubuntu install disk doubles as a live CD. So you can boot into Linux from the CD and try it out without actually installing anything on your hard drive. If you don't like it, just eject the CD and reboot and you're back in Windows land.

XP is great for mission critical app's.... - finn, on 08/18/2008, -1/+13ugh.. like someone said, this article is heavily laced with ads and is very slow (and i doubt it's the digg effect).. also full of grammatical mistakes, and any 'article' laced with that many mistakes and/or ads reeks of ...well...amateurism, that is, I would not trust anyone to base their linux lore on this article.
in other words, this article gives linux a bad name - abadjay, on 08/18/2008, -2/+13buried for crappy server and not being on one page.
- bitmastery, on 08/18/2008, -1/+12Linux good at computer. I've can been dropped on head. Grammar not is usefullness.
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -4/+15Finally made the switch today, since the new ALSA driver supports my laptop's sound.
I love using it on my laptop, but I don't know about a desktop since I usually game. But as long as you don't have a gaming laptop, Linux is a perfect solution. - TheLoneHoot, on 08/18/2008, -1/+11I'm sorry... these "ads" and "pop-ups" you speak of... I just don't understand. You're not still using IE are you?
- TimeIsTissue, on 08/18/2008, -3/+13i'm switching to linux, after being a windows/mac user for the past 8 years of my life.
nothing special about me, just an average computer user. don't you think there are others wholl be like me? - inactive, on 08/18/2008, -2/+12why would you need to call geek squad? what kind of dumb ass doesn't know how to dual-boot/reinstall?
- redwallhp, on 08/18/2008, -1/+11Count servers and it does...
- inactive, on 08/17/2008, -3/+12If you are a linux noob, best to back up all important windows files first. If you don't know what you are doing you might screw up your windows install if you aren't using one of the easier distros.
- antdude, on 08/18/2008, -0/+9What ads and pop-ups? [grin]
- dacheetah, on 08/18/2008, -0/+9Installing software in Linux is much harder than that...
I mean ticking a box in the Add/Remove Applications window, or typing "apt-get install " from the terminal is just so hard, neither are as easy as getting all the way through a 4 CD installation of a windows application only to find that once the whole installation is complete, it won't work because you were not a local admin when you installed it, having to uninstall the software, only to find that part of it has managed to run, and refuses to quit, stopping you from removing the files that are currently in use forcing you to boot into safe mode to manually delete the files and registry entries that the program installed, reboot to reinstall and have the installer find traces of the program left and attempt to repair, only to update only to fail again when it finds that other parts are missing, at which point you void the warranty by dropping the computer from the 8th floor window. - 1coreduo, on 08/18/2008, -1/+10Windows: $$$, if your time is worth fighting with Viruses, Intruders, Spyware, Troyans and Adware
- MoldyMagnet, on 08/18/2008, -8/+16This link is LOADED with popups and ad's - terrible. Also the content is extremely surface - bury this trash
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -0/+8If everyone had that kind of enthusiasm it might just happen!
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -0/+8Better than stupid iphone articles jeez I'm freaking sick of the iphone
- troye, on 08/18/2008, -0/+7Also, the writer has difficulty composing English.
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -0/+75) A spare arm and leg when you call geek Squad.
Fixed it for you. - Natilator3, on 08/18/2008, -0/+7if you tried it, it would increase the user base...
- TheLoneHoot, on 08/18/2008, -1/+8"Ugh ... when Linux reaches a user base of more than 1-2 %, call me."
Will it be as cool and trendy then as your iPhone and your popped collar and your BMW 3 series and your frosted highlights and your spray on tan and your Movado watch and... ? - lead2thehead, on 08/18/2008, -1/+8Would anybody who dugg him down care to explain? IBM sold it's entire PC division to Lenovo two years ago.
- championchap, on 08/17/2008, -8/+15I hate how we treat it like some kind of lump we've found on our testicles.
If you're interested to know what it is, check it out!
Don't put it off and see what it MIGHT be like online first. - Shootfast, on 08/18/2008, -3/+9Mac?
- DangerCollie, on 08/18/2008, -0/+6That was my question. To borrow a line from Pulp Fiction: English, Motherf----. Do you speak it?
- Dylson, on 08/17/2008, -2/+8This has been on the front page of digg numerous times.
- venuspcs, on 08/18/2008, -3/+9That's Funny....My Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) looks, sounds and acts like OSX Leopard. I can run damn near any Windows application or game in Linux, as well as OSX games/applications and oh of course the several hundred thousand FREE LINUX APPLICATIONS AND GAMES and yes there are a ***** LOAD OF GOOD LINUX GAMES.
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -0/+6Congratulations for switching. I never regret since I made the switch.
- noen, on 08/18/2008, -5/+11I'd like to use Linux but it just doesn't fit with what I need. I need bare metal performance for my apps like photoshop CS3, a must have, Modo, a must have, a compositor, sorry theoria just doesn't cut it. There is simply no replacement for these and several other high end CG apps that I must have. I've tried Ubuntu, I like it, but I'm kind of locked in to be honest.
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -6/+11Like Windows works perfect all the time (blue screens of death anyone?) Also, I've complied source code maybe once since switching to Linux. 95% of the software is available through synaptic package manager or in .deb format (point and click to install). I say Ubuntu is as easy to use as Windows for the average computer user... and better overall as far as a non-bloated operating system *cough* vista.
- marike, on 08/18/2008, -4/+9If you are a programmer, you'll find that Linux (and by virtue of being based on BSD unix, Mac OS X) is an extremely programmer friendly environment. A bash shell and gcc compiler makes Ubuntu, Gentoo, OpenSUSE, or whatever flavor is your favorite Linux a joy to use. Always waited for someone to make binaries for your system is for wooses. (Yes, Windows users, I'm looking at you)
I agree with the others: You don't need to know anything specific before switching to Linux. If you can use a mouse and keyboard, you're all set. - TheLoneHoot, on 08/18/2008, -2/+7I have no idea why you're being dugg down. No explanations, just dugg down for trying to be helpful. Stay classy Microsoft fanbois!
- mikelieman, on 08/18/2008, -1/+6You play games on a PS3.
- sloppychris, on 08/18/2008, -0/+5Also if you're new to linux use an easy distro!
- Kamujin, on 08/18/2008, -0/+5Sorry, Linux is a better gaming OS then Mac due to wine.
- pagno, on 08/18/2008, -0/+5"Linux has emerged as one of the great alternative to Windows and it is must if you want to make the transition.. "
This Transitions are Stupids! Whys I use brokens computers if my Internets donut works, huH! - TheLoneHoot, on 08/18/2008, -0/+5So basically you're saying until it becomes a fad, or a popular "must have what all the cool kids have" trend, you don't care. Good. The longer you stay out of Linux the better then. Windows is perfect for you. Trust me. Now back to American Idol, with your sheep ass.
- lead2thehead, on 08/18/2008, -0/+5The Ubuntu install disk doubles as a live CD. So you can boot it from the install disk and run it without actually installing anything on your hard drive.
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -0/+5Common,..I hate to shut my windows down because I`m afraid it won`t start anymore after I downloaded some ridiculous updates that fix 2-year old security holes. The machines crashes around once a week.
My Linux laptop is running 24-7 and only shuts down when the server automatically restarts. It nerver crashes, it is reliable and... FREE! Most importantly! -
