- lorenzoamigo, on 10/17/2008, -1/+86I like linux, but why does every linux article writer need to have a beard?
- arjie, on 10/17/2008, -0/+78That's for Unix compatibility: http://www.usit.uio.no/it/unix/unix-kurs_houston/d ... :)
- enantiodromia, on 10/17/2008, -4/+46whoa, EXT4. nice.
no more >2TB partition headaches - oobuntu, on 10/17/2008, -0/+38beard users are so smug they don't even have to reply to a thread, but instead start a new comment ;)
- BoneheadFarker, on 10/17/2008, -0/+32Damn...now I know I'm way behind the curve. I haven't hit that issue yet.
- bort27, on 10/17/2008, -0/+29The maximum size of an ext3 partition is actually 16T (32T if you use 8K block sizes). You're probably running into a problem with fdisk; use parted instead. And you shouldn't be using ext4 yet anyway... wait until it's stable.
- richardwooding, on 10/17/2008, -4/+32Hey! I use Linux and I have a beard ..... oh wait ..... I see your point.
- relinquish, on 10/17/2008, -0/+27Psh. Linux 2.6.27 is SO much better than 2.6.26
- TiMMY8765, on 10/17/2008, -2/+286. ACPI is working on my laptop again
- twoboxen, on 10/17/2008, -4/+29Seriously? THAT is all you got out of the article?
Good article with a good level of technical detail. Looks like some great changes! - bieber, on 10/17/2008, -1/+19A whole operating system compared to a kernel? Not even mentioning the obvious disparities in features, that is. You're really on the ball, aren'tcha
- thavi, on 10/17/2008, -0/+13just wish i could block certain WORDS, like obama, palin, mccain, biden... i cant wait til this election is over so the propaganda goes away
- RyeBrye, on 10/17/2008, -0/+12ext3 sucks big time for media servers. JFS or XFS run circles around anything that routinely has to delete multi-gigabyte files.
- nemoder, on 10/17/2008, -4/+16The point is those webcams will now 'just work' in Linux instead of having to install 3rd party (and possibly buggy) drivers for them first. That's something windows can't even claim most of the time.
- inactive, on 10/17/2008, -1/+12I actually wish they had a feature that would block people from commenting about how they don't give a *****.
Why take the time out of your day to tell people that you don't care? - MudMan69, on 10/17/2008, -0/+11I like the feature where my DVD drive is no longer able to use DMA like it could with previous versions.
- rnolds, on 10/17/2008, -30/+41Support for web cams. Cutting edge stuff.
- nazsco, on 10/17/2008, -3/+13Because it's the law.
- Annibal, on 10/17/2008, -1/+11Why an article about linux starts and end talking about windows?
- insllvn, on 10/17/2008, -1/+10@Slothapotamus, if you think hacking around in the guts of your OS to get a particular gadget working is pain, I question why you are on a tech news site commenting in a thread on Linux.
- crj123082, on 10/17/2008, -1/+10i thought that was the Mac mantra...
- 4321234, on 10/17/2008, -1/+9Whatever. As long as it's not killing it's wife.
- wiggles, on 10/17/2008, -0/+8When it comes to filesystems, I never ever take the developer's word for it that it's stable. I wait until it gets vetted by those members of the community brave enough to use it.
- Slothapotamus, on 10/17/2008, -17/+25Digg me down for saying this.
- TheWindBlows, on 10/17/2008, -1/+8That was Mac's line. Its more like most things just work compared to windows which needs a seperated driver for everything it see's.
- podgey22, on 10/17/2008, -3/+10It hurts the message but it helps the uptake. For hardware purchases on my *nix systems, free-ness of the driver comes after: price, performance, bugginess of the driver and general features.
A free driver would be a cherry on top but I'd much rather a binary driver that worked well and let me use my hardware as it was intended. - adkenc, on 10/17/2008, -0/+7probably refers to something else. i've been able to plug in and swap music on my creative zen nano plus without a problem since i can remember.
- orlyfactor, on 10/17/2008, -1/+8Digg would pretty much be a blank page at that point...
- 4DFX, on 10/17/2008, -1/+8Nobody would chastise you for politely asking what exactly you don't understand...
- Giga, on 10/17/2008, -0/+6Way to not be a stereotypical *****. I was using Gentoo back then as it was a great way to learn more about the underlying components in a Linux system, rather than to have everything hidden away by GUI tools. I don't recommend it for everyday use, but I do recommend that power users wishing to learn more give it a try for a while.
- raydeen, on 10/17/2008, -3/+9I had to jump through some hoops to get my Creative Live Notebook cam working and it's still got a few problems. Hopefully this clears most if not all of this up.
- 4DFX, on 10/17/2008, -1/+7troll > paldmsy
- ReidFleming, on 10/17/2008, -1/+7Screw you, buddy.
- TheWindBlows, on 10/17/2008, -0/+6ext4 was recently marked stable by its developer and the branch name has been changed from ext4dev to ext4 It may end up in the 2.6.28 release as stable.
- aoou4444, on 10/17/2008, -0/+6Because the article is about "the five best things in Linux 2.6.27." Just because it's not listed with numbers or bullets doesn't mean it isn't exactly as the title stated.
- abbathdoom, on 10/17/2008, -10/+16The march of the penguins continues...
- orlyfactor, on 10/17/2008, -1/+6Now with fuller and grayer beards!
- iofthestorm, on 10/17/2008, -0/+5No, this is more of a lower-level thing. Basically, flash drives act like hard drives to present a usable interface to the computer, but internally they are different, so if you have direct access to the flash memory you can optimize performance for flash rather than current filesystems which are optimized for hard disk. I do believe you are looking for the MSC option in your Sandisk player though.
- ButterLoyalist, on 10/17/2008, -2/+7Dude...
- srg13, on 10/17/2008, -1/+6Can you make up something original to say?
- CalcProgrammer1, on 10/17/2008, -2/+7What's so great about binary drivers? Do you like 3d acceleration? Would you rather oppose binary drivers and use the very incomplete RadeonHD package with only minimal 2d acceleration or use fglrx and get almost full acceleration? Maybe in the future when RadeonHD matures and gets 3d acceleration I'll switch (fglrx isn't that great, but at least it WORKS in 2.6.27, all it did was crash before).
As for nVidia, their driver may be proprietary, but they show that Linux support does matter to them. The nVidia Linux driver supports pretty much everything the Windows one does and works very well. - jimminy, on 10/17/2008, -0/+5He cares and he's not happy about it.
- frazw, on 10/17/2008, -1/+5"The whole idea behind GNU/Linux is to have a system that people are free to understand and improve. "
The point of GNU/Linux is that people have an OS that they are free to do with as they wish. If they wish to install binary drivers as MANY people do then who are you to stop them. If you were to try you'd be going against the ethos of the whole movement.
The point is that you and others can go down the road you want to, using foss drivers, and anyone else can go down the road they want to, using fully functional proprietary drivers. - sodade, on 10/17/2008, -1/+5"Linux now supports direct access to flash-memory based storage devices, such as USB drives"
Does this mean that I will be able to actually add/delete media on my cheapo Sandisk MP3 player? Having to dual boot to change my workout mix is annoying as *****. - secrity, on 10/17/2008, -0/+4It is a new feature for the kernel. The location of the drivers is to accommodate and solidify where they had traditionally been kept in some distros.
- colonels1020, on 10/17/2008, -0/+4my filesystem is better than your filesystem
- ileftfark, on 10/17/2008, -0/+4Reading is so hard!
- theodenking, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3There's nothing wrong with lking gadgets that work out of the box insllvn. I love technology because it makes my life easier, not because it makes it more challenging.
- hyAxis, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3Aw, man, that is SUCH a relief.
Those headaches have been killing me. - databeast, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3MTPFS, its a FUSE filesystem for MTP devices, mount them locally like any other filesystem
