- rhizome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Who's the idiot submitting pages to digg that don't have ads on them?
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What about dpt.
Don't post then.
;). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Reminded me of the old bumper sticker "If u cn rd ths, u mst uz unx!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Either works, I guess. When two Unix machines transfer (CoPy) files to eachother, they use a Communication Protocol. However, I trust Wikipedia over some dude's site.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, you're not a command-line user! Yes, most Linux's have these installed, and BSD's and Solaris' too. Great that you can get by with GUI programs (many GUI programs run these commands in the background, anyway). You might bring up a terminal and try typing "info" - if info is installed on your system, you'll see a list including these and many others. Use arrow keys to scroll through info and "q" to quit.
They're there if you need them. Most power users prefer to bash out a few commands at a terminal rather than start the equivalent GUI program, because it's faster that way. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The HURD stands for Hardly Usable Rubbish set of Daemons. Or at least it should.
I made a bet with a mate that Duke Nuken Forever will be out before the HURD is ready for common use. Think my money is safe. - leopardhunter, on 02/18/2009, -1/+3UUCP = Unix to Unix Communication Protocol? I've heard "Unix to Unix Copy Program" but Wikipedia says "Unix to Unix CoPy".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uucp - subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Huh? What is "lame" about technical information? Uninteresting sure if it's not your deal but calling it lame is.............lame.
- subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Markie1006=Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of Unix in a Nutshell. It covers pretty much all most-used commands that are available.
Ta-Da...Just got a 30% off email coupon from Borders. Geekville here I come!! D. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@subgeniusd
"BTW - do you hang out on a Linux forum somewhere? D."
Heck, I have a whole site. Check my profile.
But the ultimate Linux forum is:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/ - test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is helpful as i have recently started using darwin in mac osx.. thanks for the list.
- subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pardon a n00bish question. Do all of these acronyms apply exactly to Linux or is this specifically for UNIX? I know Linux is based on UNIX but have never seen many of these. I searched Linux acronyms on Digg/all time but came up with 3 unhelpful entries. Thanx.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, info is actually here and there as others have said. I like "info" better because it's more like a comprehensive system for the first-timer, and man pages are sometimes the first thing new-comers complain about (too terse, high-level, no GUI, etc.). At the risk of being a blog-spammer, I did a whole post on the various Linux documentation formats:
http://penguinpetes.com/b2evo/index.php?title=what_s_up_doc_a_guide_to_linux_documenta&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1. - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1info pages are notoriously condescending.
- stuffhappens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do your head in - look up RMSs definition of GNU/Hurd:
http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/hurd.html#name
That only makes sense after your eighth beer! - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No C++ means c plus plus. .cpp is the extension used because filesystems wouldn't like hello.c++. Its quite understandable how you'd make that mistake though.
- subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Followed suggestion and this is part of a full page of info:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This (the Directory node) gives a menu of major topics. Typing "d"
returns here, "q" exits, "?" lists all INFO commands, "h" gives a
primer for first-timers, "mTexinfo" visits Texinfo topic,
etc
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And yes I am very interested in developing more CLI skills. What little I have done is amazingly fast. The fact that I did not know I have a Linux tutorial on this system (Xandros) is embarassing. Thanks hosiah.
BTW - do you hang out on a Linux forum somewhere? D. - Markie1006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1info is possibly the worst thing to use as an inexperienced user.
'man -k commands' would be more useful.
Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of Unix in a Nutshell.
It covers pretty much all most-used commands that are available. - exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm just happy that according to jargon, I count as a net.god.
- fylb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Uh ? No "cd" ? Doesn't that just mean "change directory" ?
- akak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Believe the Unix MAN Pages: UNIX-to-UNIX system copy
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ttt - tic tac toe
What the heck is this? Is this actually a working command? - Numbski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1cpp == c plus plus, does it not? (confused)
That really needs to be on a wiki someplace for corrections/adjustments. : - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Not yours, we accept that you have nothing constructive to say by now. Quite sad really, all that potential wasted on Linux hate.
- icepick72, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@imcitizen: I trust Wikipedia over some dude's site.
Wikipedia is some dudes and dudettes, or some random guy who keeps changing content. I don't know where my trust best lies. I would take either over a shot in the dark. - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3cpp C pre-processor
Yeah.. - cody50, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Don't feed the troll.
- icepick72, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0SHUT. THE. HELL. UP. SO. I. CAN. SLEEP!
http://digg.com/videos_comedy/Hobo_Madness - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1rather lame than interesting
- blackb0x, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1What about "idc"
I Dont Care
:) - dicerandom, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Is it a good thing or a bad thing that I both knew and have used almost everything listed?
- majinboy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5if you don't have anything constructive to say, then shut the hell up.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2@majinboy
Comments on Digg were supposed to be constructive?
...
Well then. My stand corrected. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4Unfortunately, "work,-please,-just-work,-for-once!" doesn't seem to be one of the commands
What is Digg?
