- corevette, on 10/11/2007, -2/+36call me crazy, but we should make an acronym 'BTB' for bypass the blog....
ex. BTB : http://blog.lxpages.com/ultimate_linux.html - mykos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28"BTB" would be more productive than "OMG BLOGSPAM BURIED".
- asforme, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22How about just stop digging blogs, and submit the actual story?
- Fhionnlaoch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17"Searching for drivers is a bitch."
It is for me too, even on Windows, especially if you lose the Manufacturer's drivers disc. The problem is proprietary drivers, not Linux. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16How about "Actual Link:"
- TheOther1, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16"Searching for drivers is a bitch."
Ummm, how is using Google more of a bitch when searchng for Linux drivers than it is when searching for Windows drivers? - arbulus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14This is a textbook definition of FUD kids.
- mccord, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10[~]>format c:

:'( - Toshibi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8STKD, you probably won't read this, but setting up Linux is pretty simple. It takes me about a quarter the time Windows does, and I don't have to go hunting down drivers...and with this latest personal install, I swore not to use Automatix, and it still didn't take very long.
Sorry, but while I'm installing Linux, can usually surf the web, play games, check e-mails. Can't do that during a Windows install. - flag564, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10sudo BTB?
- tehkain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Sure there are gui methods and I will teach people to use them before the console. If you are not afraid of the command line tho you can increase your productivity by using it. That doesnt mean that the gui is flawed in anyway(its actually polished). It is just easier for some of us to open the console with our keyboard shortcut then 'sudo aptitude install vlc' rather then searching for vlc in synaptic then check it then apply. Also it is easier to just type 'cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bulletproof' rather then launching gksudo nautilus and copying it in the gui. This is one thing I love about unixlike OSes. The CLI is efficient for those who want to use it, but at the same time they do not even need to know a console exist if they would like.
- pastaq, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4$ sudo apt-get remove STKD
$ You do not have root permissions. Remove Failed
Damn... I found something linux cant do =/ - wolf08, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Lets try BptB or BPTB. For some reason, my mind doesn't read 2 syllable, 1 syllable, 1 syllable when I read BTB. Instead, I read 1,1,1. Anyone else find this?
- maronnax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Not bad, not bad. Obviously you can critique lists like this to no end, but it's not bad.
There probably wasn't any need for him to mention "more", and especially not to give it a slightly better spot than the command "less". To the best of my knowledge, less is better than more (less is more) for every application -- it doesn't read the whole file in at once, and it also allows moving backwards, instead of just forwards. In fact (something I just realized), Mac OSX doesn't even provide the "more" program in its distribution, using "less" for everything.
Like I said, one can critique forever, and that's just one very small blemish on an otherwise fine cheat sheet. - cojerk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3FTA: "touch Create an empty file"
I'm no expert, but wont touch update the modified time stamp of a file? Isn't that it's primary purpose? I didn't know it could create empty files, but it make sense.
Nice list though. A little excessive with some of the parameter variations. - bickdigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The Ultimate Linux Reference Guide :
$> man man - shanesemler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I could use this reference... or I could just use the GUI (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, etc).
- heero101086, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3where was this one year ago, when i was being tested on this in a cs exam...... (cries...)
- gasxtreme, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3AWESOME! Exactly what I have been looking for! A nicely formatted list of some basic linux commands complete with simple, easy to understand explanations, along with a few examples.
- tommyboy180, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3This guide sucks. It has no examples! If you want a great guide go to http://www.howtoforge.com/useful_linux_commands
- wirelesshnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I prefer "Just say no to blog spam"
- baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3nano is missing one very important thing for text editing = Syntax highlighting...
- thtroyer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Not a bad list. Most Linux distros come with nano, a GNU clone of pico.
- waratah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I have never heard of recode. Worth an independent story line.
Wait : http://digg.com/linux_unix/Linux_Command_Line_Cheatsheet
I don't like newbie and command line being mixed. 'new programmer / administrator' maybe. No digg on this story. - GodsMadClown, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://wiki.linuxhelp.net/index.php/Nano_Syntax_Highlighting
I use it it to make quick shell scripts. - BalooUrsidae, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Digged down as inaccurate. Should be titled "Blog post about the Ultimate Linux Reference Guide". It's not the guide itself.
- nailer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Most newbies would hopefully be able to avoid the command line - you don't really need it for any desktop stuff.
I'd call it 'A Simple Introduction to the Linux Command Line'.
But still good. - pixelbeat_, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2nice layout. Hang on a minute!
http://www.pixelbeat.org/cmdline.html - groovin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3eat ***** and die *****
Newbies DO NOT run this command - SteveyDevey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Another small blemish is their description of 'touch'. It certainly will create a new file if the one you are specifying does not exist. But it also updates the "last modified" date/time on a file. It will not always create a blank one (which implies that it will erase one that's already there).
Edit: And since I was interrupted while in the middle of typing this comment, someone else made the same one. :) - satipip, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1C'mon, in no way may this little list of commands (and explanations) be called "ultimate" or "complete" or a "reference".
It is nice for beginners to get a toe or two wet. But it is only is a semi-random small collection of commands and config files.
Giving this digg such a sensational headline is arrogant and exaggerated.
Buried for inaccuracy and overplaying (my first digging down of a story ever). - shanesemler, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Well, I'm an artist and musician. The CLI doesn't make me more productive. It's mostly a nuisance. I suppose if I was an admin or something, it would be more useful. Though I have to admit, I play with Linux more than do anything productive so.. yeah. I guess I didn't make much of a point. :P
- crimsonnblue, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@wolf08
I think the reason why its like this for you is because bypass almost acts as a strong compound word. But I feel ya. - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Looks like a nice 'cheat sheet'. There are so many of these on the Web, but this one is particularly large.
- mjparme, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That is a long list but it really only has one useful one that you need:
man topic - makakoloco, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I wish there was something like the FreeBSD handbook.
- digitalranger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Nice cheat sheet. Thanks for posting.
- mushroom, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@asforme Cause then we will just get into the dupe war your to young to remember the great dupe war of 05
- dajtodap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1good stuff
- socokoolaid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I've never had the basic video/monitor, mouse, keyboard, and NIC not at least work out of the box on Linux.
You need drivers for Linux? ;P
It's windows that is the massive hunt for drivers. Someone has already made Linux drivers for just about everything, and their easily found. Windows drivers are frequently buggy, poorly maintained, and if not hard to find, hidden deep away in the underbelly of the manufacturer's site. - BalooUrsidae, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Heh, whip out your Cedega and relive the 80s in Vice City!
- funkytaco, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The author failed to mention:
less is more. - DonPMitchell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wow, takes me back to the 1980s when I was using UNIX full time. Not that I really want to be taken back to the 1980s...
- chingy1788, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2its not about drivers
its combining all those many commands to do something
thats the hard part
In windows you can do almost anything with the mouse - sogdian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Digged down as an inaccurate comment. If you read it you would notice "Unfortunately, I was not able to fit it into this blog template so I’ve created a separate html file."
- Technopundit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Very nice, concise, with no smart-aleck remarks or insults. A rare find for Linux.
- leamanc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I've got "more" on all my OS X boxes, and I know it's been there since at least 10.3. Maybe /usr/bin is not in your path?
- Nougat, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3@wolf08 (#6744928)
How about STB: Skip The Blog - CircleFusion, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Why do we need another f()cking acronym?
Use whole words that make complete sentences.
