- frase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Given the name, one could be forgiven for thinking this is some flavour of Ubuntu for the health industry.
Edubuntu = targeted at education environments
Medibuntu = targeted at medical professionals...?
...or am I the only one? - fyre2012, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15At first glance i thought this was for a new Medical based Ubuntu distribution!
I FEEL CHEATED!! I WANT MY OPEN SOURCE SURGERY!!! - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17How many times am I going to have to block this waste of life?

Maybe because a large number of ubuntu users (like myself) have considered this a bit of a necessity and were annoyed like hell by whatever problems the plf repository was having. Maybe because I probably wouldn't have found about this for a while if it wasn't for digg. A better question would be why does every Gentoo user (in other words the 6 of you who exist) have the insatiable need to comment on Ubuntu specific threads (not to mention share the same damn icon).
Oh, and this does not come from a Ubuntu fanboy. Most Ubuntu articles are crap, just like most articles in most categories here are crap. How about you stop being a tool by complaining every time you see one? - nixr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Phocion55,
I actually agree with most of your sentiments regarding Ubuntu's prominence skewing the perception of Linux as a whole but what good does it do to, for lack of a better term, troll every Ubuntu story you see? I mean you aren't going to win any converts (which probably isn't your intention anyway) by badgering everyone who makes a positive statement about Ubuntu. I mean no disrespect to you in any way when I say this, but you sound like warped and frustrated old man. Let these people enjoy their distro of choice and you do likewise. You might want to also consider a moratorium on reading Ubuntu stories while your at it. Just until your blood pressure goes down. - bettermentflux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Using it now and getting below 1k/sec. Not much there at this point, either: Skype, Google Earth, Libdvdcss and a small handful of others.
- Akuma66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Good god I hope Phocion55 isn't representative of most Gentoo users nowadays.
I used Gentoo in the past, loved it, just took a hell of a long time to get going which is why I am soon going to put Sabayon on my main machine soon.
I use Ubuntu on my laptop and love it, it just works, and I can do everything I need nice and quick without hassle.
There is room for both. - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@ ubuwalker
anicejew is probably some anti-Semite whose account was already banned (the usersname changed). He chooses this avatar for a reason and flames in every thread. I urge Digg to just ban his IP address/range just as Slashdot treated in their recent 'housecleaning'. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"But yea, you're right....Gentoo doesn't do anything "news worthy""
Read my post again: Have them do something newsworthy, post an article. Instead of wasting your time ***** on Ubuntu stories, go do something constructive with your time. - aslvrstn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No wonder people think Linux users can be tool-bags. Look, I used Ubuntu for months, switched to Linux for my desktop, had Ubuntu running at work, installed Ubuntu on my sister's PC. Guess what, they both have their merits. If I need a working Linux box in under an hour, sorry Gentoo, that's not exactly your strong point. For everything else about MY desktop PERSONALLY, I like Gentoo. But guess what. I'm not everyone! Stop being such Linux snobs to each other. Jesus christ, this kind of flaming should be directed at MS ;-)
- onemillion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i think this is a media buntu...
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Because the PLF repos have been down since forever.
- diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3just a fair warning to new users, I wouldn't use any external repos if you plan on upgrading to Feisty in April. Or if you have a production machine that is public to the internet and security is important.
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Phocion55 has a point. This is the frustration he is trying to convey, I believe: Where people go nuts over Ubuntu for this and that, Gentoo has already had these things for a long time. The 'official' Gentoo mirrors have lame, libdvdcss, java, heck even VMware!
http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=libdvdcss
http://packages.gentoo.org/packages/?category=app-emulation;name=vmware-workstation
http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=lame
And gentoo is 100% free, as you can read about on their webpage. It runs on every kind of arch you could imagine, also. I think it frustrates people like Phocion55 and others where Ubuntu people freak out and go wild over things that have been a part of other distributions for a long time. Then, the ubuntu fan-boys come in and say 'Ubuntu is the best distro out there- everyone else sucks!' further adding to the frustration.
I agree with an above poster, every distro out there is great, unique, and needed. But to be an Ubuntu fan-boy and slam Gentoo, Fedora, or any other distro-- well, you're just asking for it. There is plenty of current news with Gentoo; it just doesn't currently happen to be 'HOW-TO get libdvdcss' etc. and other popular things like that b/c that is already part of the official Gentoo package system.
Feel free to mod this down, but FWIW I use Ubuntu, Debian, and Gentoo on my machines. - rabidsnail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been having several slow repos lately, not just this one. Perhaps repos should consider using apt-torrent ( http://sianka.free.fr/ ).
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@fyre: You're just asking for a joke about "open sores".
- JPDyno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thats what i thought when i first saw it. Guess not. lol. I would've used a different name
- civilwarlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Phocion55 Re: Sabayon considered by beryl developers as official distro.
You know the ubuntu fanboys must be pissed about that :-) - nixr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have been using this repo for 2 weeks. It's exactly the same as the old one was. The transfer rates do seem to take a nosedive occasionally but for the most part it's been acceptable.
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excellent. Information their main site could use.
- despreocupado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmmm... gonna give it a little while to prove itself before i decide if its any good...

- Tuxbunta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"you noobs should really get your heads out of your collective asses and expand your horizons with other distros."
Linux noob? That is pretty true since I have been using Ubuntu for only six or so months. My first try was with Mandrake 10.1 free edition, and that turned me off of linux for about year or so. What exactly is your point in calling me a linux noob? I have no problem about trying another linux distro, but what would be the point. I want a system I can use, not play around with. You may note that I am not the ***** who goes to threads/forums of other linux distros, and complains like a little bitch because they are not using the same distro I am, nor do I spend my time in the linux section of digg waiting in the shadows for a distro specific post to come and jump in it like the inbred bastards you and Phocion are just to bitch about it, and get my trollish pleasure off. So am I a linux noob? Yes. Does that make me the linux ***** you two are? No. - Ignotus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think anything that causes someone to give Linux a try is a good thing. Therefore, Ubuntu is a good thing imho. Some new people will be exposed to Linux because of all the exposure that Ubuntu gets. Some of them will then try out other distros at some point. I'm sure there are people out there who have tried other distros but would have never (or at least any time soon) gotten interested in Linux to begin with if not for the exposure of Ubuntu. Linux is about choice. People can choose to use whichever distro they like and install whichever repos or packages they like. People need to stop being snobs and saying things like "Ubuntu is for n00bs" or "stop being a n00b and install a real distro like Slackware" or whatever it is that people say. All it does is make it apparent that you feel lowly enough about yourself that you feel the need to attack others over a choice they made. Does it make you feel better to voice how much of a 1337 h@xx0r you are because you don't use the n00b distro Ubuntu?
Also, regarding the crying about stories hitting the front page that you don't like. Digg is for digging stories that you personally like. It's not necessarily for digging stories that you think everyone else will like/digg. If a lot of people like Ubuntu and find the story interesting, then it's going to get diggs. The object of the site is to see what stories other people "digg". It doesn't mean that Ubuntu is the best distro, or that the story is the best story or most useful. It simply means that a lot of people apparently liked it. If you don't like the story, then bury it and move on. - plingboot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When did it become popular to stick 'how?' on the end of sentences? Seen it a few times now and it's driving me fing nuts. Maybe I'm just too old or English, to get it.
- deanshultz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, i took the time to look into this. Can't recommend it, though. Removing from sources list...
Saw the 'Hot Babe' resource and, like a lot of hot babes, will bet it is a 'resource hog'... - dick-richardson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3No one claimed you brought Gentoo up originally. Akuma66 was just making the very good point that you're a douche and hopefully not representative of a given community. Please re-read.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem with banning IPs is that many ISPs provide dynamic IPs so you can't easily use them for servers. What we need is an idiot hunter cabal of assassins to deal with these morons permanently without some random user sharing his IP from finding himself blocked.
- FarcicalFart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1EasyUbuntu now uses this repo.
- livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Frankly I could live without the default doo-doo brown look
- fyre2012, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I totally agree with Phocion55, tho dude... chill! You forget that you too were a linux noob at one point.
Personally, i've gotten the best support from BOTH Ubuntu and Gentoo over other distros. The Gentoo forums are excellent, and totally don't bitch at you for asking trivial questions. The _love_ linux, and are happy that the GNU is still alive. No Gentoo isn't for everyone, and IMHO it's not a really great desktop distro (tho it can be, which is part of what makes gentoo awesome). You certainly couldn't have it running in an hour, (without Sabayon or livecd) on a Desktop, however I perform installs daily and it takes me about 45 minutes.
I work as the Systems Admin for a growing data facility, so when I install Gentoo, it's to use as a server, however, so i don't have to compile X, Gnome, KDE and everything else that goes along with it. Recently, we just started offering Dedicated Ubuntu Servers because they're easy to install, setup, configure and support. (so don't say there isn't a decent Ubuntu Dedicated Server provider out there, check us out www.sevenl.net)
For me, Linux has been about CHOICE. I CHOOSE to get into the nitty gritty when building servers, which is why Gentoo works for me and my company. I don't choose to do the same for my desktops, because it's a pain and i don't have the time. I'll gladly install Ubuntu and support it on machines that need X.
And now that we offer Dedicated Ubuntu Servers, customers now have a little more choice too. Don't flame them for wanting to choose something fresh and new that's easy to use. How else will we break the M$ $tranglehold?? - Irimi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2At first glance I thought it would be for use in hospitals.
- aidanr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3you can browse the repo here to see whats available

i don't really see anything there that you can't get with automatix or easyubuntu
edit:// dftz just beat me to it :) - cynicist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why does everyone who uses Ubuntu have to be a noob? Personally, I like the brown look.

Because Ubuntu is in the title, of course. If it had 'HOW-TO' also in the title, it would get another 500 diggs. - OCme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Thanks!

- motang, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5@Phocion55 many times as he is a spammer hired by microsoft ;-)
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3For the record, I wasn't the one who brought Gentoo into the conversation if you read the comments properly. My initial posts had NOTHING to do with Gentoo.
And never once did I say "Gentoo is the best....you HAVE to try it." Please re-read. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7Uhhhh yea.
SabayonLinux? The distro and LiveCD that basically implements all new Linux-based technologies before anyone else.
So.....yea.....nice try though. You may at some point want to step outside your Ubuntu bubble so you at least have some clue about Linux. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Quote: "have Gentoo do something news worthy"
