- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+68> ...PC makers shied away from Linux.
Not true. They 'shied away' from Microsoft's wrath. Ask Novell's Hovsepian.
http://www.cbronline.com/article_news.asp?guid=204 ...
"Microsoft Corp is using scare tactics to exert pressure on PC vendors not to explore the potential of desktop Linux, according to Novell Inc president and COO, Ron Hovsepian."
It was never about the readiness of Linux. Also see:
“We need to slaughter Novell before they get stronger….If you’re going to kill someone, there isn’t much reason to get all worked up about it and angry. You just pull the trigger. Any discussions beforehand are a waste of time. We need to smile at Novell while we pull the trigger.”
–Jim Allchin, Platform Group Vice President
“We should whack them [Dell over Linux dealings], we should make sure they understand our value.”
–Paul Flessner, Senior Vice President, Server Applications Unit
“I’m thinking of hitting the OEMs harder than in the past with anti-Linux. … they should do a delicate dance”
–Joachim Kempin, Microsoft OEM Chief
Among more... but I'll get modded down unless I keep this short. - GyroTech, on 10/10/2007, -4/+33"But since common tasks like watching a movie or syncing an iPod require hunting for and installing extra software, Linux is best for technically savvy users"
I'm pretty certain that Windows doesn't come pre-installed with iTunes either, does that means Windows is for the technically savvy too?? Awesome!! - ordminute, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21
Automatix clearly has a successful used-car salesman as a marketing lead.
Automatix has broken countless numbers of upgrades, is widely discouraged by Ubuntu developers and experienced users, and yet still it's so well-known that the NYTimes reccommends it. Sigh. Automatix isn't even needed since Ubuntu7.04 as all that codec installation is automatic.
Here's the rule: Friends Don't Let Friends Use Automatix. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Automatix?
nooooooooooooo - joseolucha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19The best complement they can give linux is that it's free??? WTF!!
How about lack of viruses, trojans....?
How about supporting more hardware than Windows, let alone mac...?
How about the smaller footprint, making it much faster in than mac or windows in comparable hardware, even while running compiz-fusion...?
How about the customizability and maleability of the os... they said it themselves, from cell phones to PC, to server clusters....?
How about amazing software available, including software (wine) that lets you run Windows applications natively.?
How about eye candy (note: third party software), way more advanced than anything you'll ever see in Windows and Mac within the next few years?
- Lylepalooza, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Why is Michael Jackson hiding behind the Ubuntu notebook?
- mvent2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11That day happened ages ago. Try out an Ubuntu live CD.
- hpfilter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11"But since common tasks like watching a movie or syncing an iPod require hunting for and installing extra software, Linux is best for technically savvy users or for people whose needs are so basic that they will never need anything other than the bundled software."
Are they talking about the same OS ?? - mvent2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10The next leap for momshisux?
An IQ above -2?
momshisux! - thomasprebble, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13I will be switching to Linux completely soon as support for XP wanes. Can't stand Vista having tried both the beta and the final product so Ubuntu is definitely where I'll be heading. It really is getting better by the day and with things like Automatix and WINE it makes the switch much easier than it used to be.
- GyroTech, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Automatix breaks apt so hard it's a disgrace!!
- joseolucha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The day there's no more command line in Ubuntu I'll switch back to Slackware.
- martalli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Like others have said, this article is more of a backhanded complement.
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Wow, you're so witty...
- shavenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10"Linux is best for technically savvy users or for people whose needs are so basic that they will never need anything other than the bundled software."
what the *****?
this story wasn't really pro-linux tbh, its "dressed" as pro linux but written to put people off - shavenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7this story wasn't really pro-linux tbh, its "dressed" as pro linux but written to put people off
- mvent2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6He probably thought you had to "hunt" for software on Google like in the Windows world and didn't notice the humble little application called "Synaptic" in the System menu.
- andyakadum, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6No one stops me from using it!!!
..oh wait
:( - preem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5and there are more people that worship windows than linux so please....stop complaining...we don't force u to use linux...u are always ranting, gd linux users, again wanna convert me....
i don't care what u use and i rather use my ram for things i need rather than malware and anti-stuff ;) - bj1989, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5In feisty ubuntu will automatically search for codecs and let you install them if you try to play a mp3, no need for automatix!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Don't use Automatix. It will break your system.
- wvdavis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Agreed, as soon as I saw the stories that Microsoft was doing "Stealth Updates" I knew it was time to bail. I'm already running Ubuntu on two machines and Edubuntu on the kid's machine. Looking hard at Apple for replacements for the rest.
- timf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Is that supposed to be sarcasm? Because it does exactly what you say it doesn't.
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4What about Add/Remove programs in the Applications menu?
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3>you know that's BS. Linux never supported my wireless PCMCIA card no matter how many distros I tried.
Use a card that's compatible. usually that's like shooting fish in a barrel, but I guess you're a bad shot.
>If Linux software were so amazing, why would you need to run wine for Windows applications?
Most people use it for games. I use it because my professor uses some odd proprietary windows program to run slideshows in class. It's an application layer that's there just in case. - einfeldt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No, post more of those comments! I had no idea those quotes where in the public eye! That's really interesting. It shows that Microsoft is still abusing its monopoly, like the quote about "cutting off Netscape's air supply."
- martalli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't think anyone will mind. Linux is linux, and even if hand-holding through the GUI is all you need for major tasks, the cli will always be there. Even OSX still can be tweaked through the CLI, and its about as newbie friendly as an OS can be.
Anyway - Slackware, Mandriva, Arch, Fedora, and so on - it is all Linux, based on the same line of kernels, using many of the same tools and GUIs. Since they can all borrow from each other, there is no reason a person couldn't switch from one to another, except for personal preferences. - SanjayM, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3You can't express the power of linux via purely GUI means, its just so expansive it isn't practically possible. Agreed some aspects do need more "guification" but saying you need GUI access to everything the shell can do is like saying you need full access to replace every part of your car with no spanner. And just think of all the cascaded menus!
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It'll be interesting to see how the computer industry evolves over the next few years as a direct result of the decisions of companies like Dell, and less popular companies like System76 and other retailers that are promoting Linux in their products.
Who knows. Give it 10 years and Microsoft may not even be selling operating systems anymore. Then again.. it might not be Linux either. The computer industry can change at the flick of a switch. - keyo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I can't recall seeing any mention of a kde app, and they are the best. None the less a very average article is better than nothing, raising awareness can only be good.
- Malarie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I really like the picture on top :)
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well, if these anecdotal stories are true (which 99.9% of them are), then it DOES 'walk the walk'
- dukeochutney, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3***** article but I love Linux and what it symbolizes. ***** capitalism
- ordminute, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think you mean to say "My wireless card manufacturer has never supported Linux, no matter how many distros I tried."
- roebeet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Baby steps. We're at the point now that Linux (and Ubuntu in particular) is a viable OS for the majority of hardware out there. Yes, you have to fish for drivers in some cases, but you have the same issue with XP. The point is that hardware is no longer a major obstacle, unless you have some obscure peripheral with closed source drivers.
The next big hurdle are applications. Yes, there are open-source alternatives for most of the software out there, but people are slow to change. But, it is possible - long ago, WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3 were THE Office standards - Microsoft managed to take the lead through a combination of features and good marketing. IE vs Netscape, PowerPoint vs Harvard Graphics, the list goes on. People need a reason to change, and not just financial reasons. - Darkhacker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You know when you are around people and someone tells a joke and as soon as you speak, everyone stops laughing? This is why.
- WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is from the NYTimes and he recommends using automatix...clearly not a nerd.
- cptchaos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponential_function
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Automatix was useful a few versions of Ubuntu ago (for me, anyway). It's obsolete now with Ubuntu and the helper apps EasyUbuntu and MediBuntu
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2>How about supporting more hardware than Windows, let alone mac...?
you know that's BS. Linux never supported my wireless PCMCIA card no matter how many distros I tried.
>How about amazing software available, including software (wine) that lets you run Windows applications natively.?
If Linux software were so amazing, why would you need to run wine for Windows applications? - Hungryhaney, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Last I checked "Add/Remove Programs" didn't connect to the Internet, get a list of the latest version of available programs and, when necessary, downloaded not only the selected program but also programs that it depended on.

Then there's plugins for ipods but I never played with a Zen. - narehart, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh, Automatix! How I despise thee.
- Amablue, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I had trouble with iPods a while back too. I don't know if it's gotten better since. I have a Zen Vision now, and that's pretty hard to get my media too also. It's a million times easier to just use the windows software it's packaged with in my experience.
- demonstar55, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1the third to last paragraph is made of fail and suck
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I dont know why you're getting Dugg down. I agree that it's great that Dell is preinstalling Ubuntu, but you're right. It's still a Dell.
I wouldn't be praising the qualities of Acer if they were doing the same either - marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0If anything, EasuUbuntu or MediBuntu

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu - marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0You can always look at my situation and pity me. I have a Sony Minidisc recorder. The only thing that will interface with it is Sony's proprietary SonicStage. And the only OS SonicStage runs on is... you guessed it.
Thank god for VirtualBox - preem, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1yep... you have no friends :P
