- bettermentflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24While the article serves as a basic introduction to what KDE is working on, it's adds no details that weren't available 6 months ago.
I realize that Plasma and KDE 4 are still early in development, but *some* updates would have been appreciated: Give me some screenshots - even if they're subject to major changes. Or some dates, even a ballpark "don't hold me to this" timeframe. Will we see a beta in 2006? Spring of '07? 2010?
Will Plasma take advantage of the usability studies made available Novell? Have the developers learned anything they plan on implementing/imptoving upon by reviewing previews of Vista or (better yet) Apple Leopard? How does Plasma compare with the stated vision for GNome 3.0 (aka "Topaz")?
Explain the "work-flow" concept: Are they trying for a task-based approach in place of the current application focus?
How do the developers feel about losing mind and market-share to GNome distributions (Suse and Ubuntu comes to mind) - and what are they going to do about it?
If I had access to some of the key KDE developers, you can bet your ass I'd have dug for details.
Note to OSNews: supply me with some credentials and contact info and I'll flesh the story out for you in an update. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11OMG! The K Desktop Environment Environment!?!
- endgame, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15KDE is so much better than Gnome...IMO
- Me1on, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Here's the new default icon theme for KDE4: http://www.oxygen-icons.org/?cat=3
- justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Welcome to the redundant department of redundancy department.
- raldz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yup.. that's the reason Linus Torvalds prefers KDE over GNOME..

- i440, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That was more like a preview then a review
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Exactly what I was thinking.
I love KDE, but I will not digg this unless I see pictures. - bsander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Next week there's a KDE conference (aKademy) scheduled in Dublin. I think this will come with lots of updates on the state of KDE4.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah I was also hoping for screen shots. Looks like we going to have to wait and see.
- bettermentflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Here's another one I would have asked: I've seen Plasma/KDE 4 brainstorms and mockups on KDE-Look http://www.kde-look.org/index.php?xsortmode=high&page=0 , the KDE Forums http://www.kde-forum.org/forum/55/KDE-4-Brainstorm.html and others.
Is there an official, developer frequented forum where ordinary users can provide input? Do the developers even *want* input? - jenkins86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just a note: OSNews isn't carrying the actual article. It's doing nothing more than linking to it, and providing a rather useless summary. So it'd be best if this were dugg down, and the actual article about KDE was dugg up instead.
- cer0s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe your answers can be found at,
http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-forums.php
Other than that, the mailing lists is your other option. - fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We have a name for this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ras_syndrome - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2At least it sounds like KDE is trying to innovate for once. Too long have both Gnome and KDE been tied to copying Windows with a little Mac OS X thrown in.
- pingviini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I personally think that Konquoror is far supperior to internet exploder. Take the KIOslaves for example. It makes ripping cds so easy, my 4th grade brother can rip cd's to his mp3 player by just dragging the icon from the mp3 file on the cd to the sansa folder on the desktop. It just doesn't get easier than that.
- Darkhacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Define "copying"? If by copying you mean using something that works well and has proved successful then I don't understand why you are complaining. Does Honda copy off of Ford? OMG!!!1 The steering wheel!! Pedals!!! COPY CAT!
Both projects have gone in a direction that they feel will be best for the users. It hasn't been perfect and there is room for improvement (as always) but I simply can't understand why people have to throw insults at *insert random open source project name here* and complain that they are copying simply because they are using things that work. Maybe the K-Menu does look and function similar to the start menu, but you know, Microsoft has done some pretty amazing things in terms of usability. There is a damn good reason the start menu has remained since 95. Of course this is just one example, but I think I'm getting my point across. - inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just can't wait to see KDE4 but they still show nothign out of yet, exept a qt4 env. in (the Krash release). Right i'm on gnome because I find that the Ubuntu Gnome is more polished then the KDE version. I will switch in a snap if KDE4 inovate the way we use the desktop.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Does KDE 4 come with the much loved ugly kindergarten default theme?
- ajtait, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3No pictures, no digg! I hate reading ;-)
- floppypond, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3How can you have an article about a new desktop manager without some pictures?
I thought the whole idea of broadband and "the new internet" was rich media?
lame. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Wow they look great. Is there any plan on reducing the functionality of Konqueror which tries to do everything like Windows/Internet Explorer.
- deohieu, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Oh man ;) You're rite. People, look: The Next-Generation **** KDE Environment **** Review - Plasma
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5That's Linux for you; no screenshots.
