- shanesemler, on 06/01/2008, -8/+70Big improvement. Now to get rid of the cashew, er I mean "toolbox" in the upper right.
- Azohko, on 06/01/2008, -8/+57Kubuntu might see a jump in popularity with stunning themes like this
- 4DFX, on 06/01/2008, -2/+38Black Theme != Vista
- carbon12, on 06/01/2008, -5/+40New video showing off KDE 4.1: http://media.ereslibre.es/2008/06/kde41.ogg (71 MB)
- n0odles, on 06/01/2008, -5/+40Look sleek as hell. Very nice, do want.
- ozid, on 06/02/2008, -9/+40I hate the way linux OS's render fonts (also, their font selection). I just don't like looking at it all day. I know its so trivial but it seems like its just a sample of the reasons many consider the OS "unrefined".
- inactive, on 06/02/2008, -7/+37Dugg for getting XKCD on the frontpage on a Sunday.
- inactive, on 06/02/2008, -2/+26From a Gnome fanboy: Bang up job you guys, keep on rocking. The Linux desktop needs more quality and healthy competition and you're all doing a wonderful job at raising the bar. Open Source fans will reap the fruits ultimately.
- jrepin, on 06/01/2008, -3/+24You can find a tutorial for creating and modifying Plasma themes here: http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/Plas ...
- Kingoftherings, on 06/02/2008, -3/+23Ooo shiny.
Looks like the K Menu Bar has slimmed down some. - cave, on 06/02/2008, -0/+20Can't we just digg that down because we hate you instead?
- sloppychris, on 06/02/2008, -0/+18exactly the same with no vision for the future?
(I use gnome) - NotOptium, on 06/02/2008, -4/+20^ Buried for 'buried for 'fugliness''
- GuyHersh, on 06/02/2008, -5/+20I always though KDE (even version 4) was terribly ugly. This finally looks bearable (and maybe an improvement over gnome). I may now finally drop gnome and try KDE for awhile.
- BlackJackJester, on 06/02/2008, -1/+16Seeing how the only thing people can really say about OSX's "superiority" over windows is that it is shiny, I guess now Linux might start to gain some ground here.
- jernejovc, on 06/01/2008, -1/+15And it's diggable here: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Screencast_Presenting_S ...
- auxide, on 06/02/2008, -10/+23still pretty meh for me
- Spr0k3t, on 06/01/2008, -1/+13I've been trying to figure out how to remove it myself.
- rossinio, on 06/02/2008, -0/+12It isn't the choice of fonts that's the problem it's how linux renders them. http://antigrain.com/research/font_rasterization/ is a great article on how the font rendering works and does some comparisons between rendering engines.
- GuyHersh, on 06/02/2008, -0/+12Thanks for the screencast. Very high quality!
- agentlame, on 06/02/2008, -0/+12'Bout sums it up.
(Also a Gnome user.) - melooon, on 06/01/2008, -4/+15Very nice indeed! With these new themes, Linux will definitely be more tempting for the casual user.
- duddy, on 06/01/2008, -12/+23Hmm, kinda looks like Vista except with a splash of nonconformist emo nerd.
:P I kid I kid. Looks great! - mynameistux, on 06/02/2008, -2/+13gnome is still... uh, never mind.
- Tsiolkovsky, on 06/02/2008, -0/+11A more complete review of KDE 4.1 from PolishLinux:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/KDE_4_Progress_New_plas ... - SteveMax, on 06/02/2008, -0/+11They need to pick up on their KDE4 implementation if they want that. Right now, OpenSuse's KDE4 is in a totally different league to Kubuntu's.
- BobCFC, on 06/02/2008, -0/+10It's not trivial, you stare at fonts all day they are very important.
Now to get great looking font in Ubuntu/gnome enable sub-pixel smoothing in System->Prefs->Appearance
(sorry don't know KDE)
This gives excellent anti-aliasing and looks good on LCD screens. Not sure why it isn't enabled by default.
Then install Liberation Sans (size 9) for the general application font:
sudo apt-get install ttf-liberation - vh1`, on 06/02/2008, -0/+10and already we have a screenshot of what they hope 4.2 will bring
http://nuno-icons.com//images/estilo/imagefolders2 ... - opencoder, on 06/02/2008, -0/+10I don't like those three blue bars that highlight the active window border. But the new features look amazing.
- aliguana, on 06/02/2008, -3/+13no, both Windows and OSX have font smoothing buit-in. I find Windows Cleartype to be slightly sharper than OSX, which can be slightly TOO smooth (read: blurry). Linux can look very 8-bit at times, but not as bad as it used to. All three are perfectly usable
- estvir, on 06/02/2008, -1/+11July 29th. So far away.
- om3ganet, on 06/02/2008, -1/+10"Consistency" ofcourse. Its the little things that drive some users mad. The font rendering is much better than it used to be in Linux.
- ptFoe, on 06/01/2008, -11/+20How the ***** is Vista like, Vista is super glossed to blind you from the fugliness.
- sloppychris, on 06/02/2008, -1/+10What's crazy is that as open source considers to get exponentially better, the users of closed source operating systems will also benefit because their OSes will have to improve in order to compete.
You saw this in action when Firefox came in and kicked Microsoft asleep at the wheel square in the nuts. (I don't know the anatomy of kicking someone in the nuts while sleeping in a car, Firefox approached the kicking from a crazy angle.) - aliguana, on 06/02/2008, -0/+9the theme looks nice, would gain more converts than the default Ubuntu brown.
Saying that, the theme on the webpage is horrific... crickey! - Arramol, on 06/02/2008, -0/+9Wow, I was expecting the server to be down (71mb file linked to on a front page Digg story?), but the video actually plays. Cool stuff too.
- MavRevMatt, on 06/02/2008, -1/+9Can't say the same about the blog though.
- Darkyuubi, on 06/02/2008, -2/+10I must say KDE is really growing into its own style. Its becoming quite attractive.
Well done I say. - Kratos76, on 06/02/2008, -0/+8Dugg, only after seeing the video posted above:
http://media.ereslibre.es/2008/06/kde41.ogg
someone already dugg it earlier:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Screencast_Presenting_S ... - kelvie, on 06/02/2008, -0/+8You can set its size now :)
- yuanzhoulu, on 06/02/2008, -0/+7i still think KDE 3 looked sleeker when you apply a nice dark theme with a good window decoration.
i don't like KDE 4 unless it has all the nice gadgets and tweaks that KDE 3 offers. like being able to scroll the mouse wheel while hovering over the titlebar and change transparency. like being able to set exactly the window border size. like being able to configure konqueror inside-out. etc.
btw, what's this obsession with analog clocks... they take up screen space, does anyone actually use them? - geodebug, on 06/02/2008, -0/+7Yeah, maybe you have to see it in motion to be impressed? It isn't bad, just a little, I don't know, geeky and been here done that?
And why does the trash icon sit in a black frame? No alpha channel? (Just kidding, I see the clock). I don't know, I want some kind of innovation that pushes it past OS X for me to get a techno-bone going. I'm assuming that minimizing/maximizing the windows is done some kind of context-sensitive way since I don't see any buttons? - om3ganet, on 06/02/2008, -1/+8Vista may suck, but the main thing going for it is the style of the Aero UI. Seems no-one understands consistency in UI design nowdays. Of course this UI is nothing like vista either. Its a bit shiny, and for once, is quite consistent in style. Still could be much better though.
When I figure how, I look forward to creating new themes for Gnome & the new KDE. - Kratos76, on 06/02/2008, -1/+8OMG, it actually just started playing in FF!! I thought It'd be a download also... is it a streaming .ogg video? Can FF just do that on its own, or is it just javascript on that page?
- innovati, on 06/02/2008, -0/+7they don't use SVG only, sorry to burst your bubble!
- diggcommentguy, on 06/02/2008, -4/+11^ Dugg for 'Buried for 'buried for 'fugliness'''
- Dohko_Xar, on 06/02/2008, -3/+9Report this guy if you hate his type.
- atbnet, on 06/02/2008, -2/+8Looks pretty good, when is 4.1 coming out?
- 44Bigs, on 06/02/2008, -1/+7Agreed.. the ugly font really kills the theme. They've been using this same font for years.. there must be a better free font available.
- darkNiGHTS, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6Does it bug anyone else when people use that they're a (fill in the blank) user to justify their statement and the get dugg up really high?
