- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -10/+31"The Linux Vault" sounds like the name a nerdy sysadmin gives his bedroom. Which is really just another way of saying "mom's basement"
- gavintlgold, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Hmm.. not bad. Maybe put a "getting started with linux" on there for newbs... And a "compiling for dummies" would be good, explaining about ./autogen.sh and ./configure and make and make install.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -6/+24It seems like duplication of effect, which only decentralizes further.
- boffert, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Buried as pretty unnecessary - there are plenty of sites in existence already which set out to achieve Linux Vault's stated aims (e.g HowtoForge).
In the interests of avoiding stale information, "configuration and administration tips" are probably better living on distribution specific sites or, in the case of software packages, on the maintainer's site. To guarantee that all the information on this site stays current at the current pace of Linux-related development, you would require a wikipedia-size user base and, call me a pessimist, I don't think that's likely to happen.
A lovely idea, but practically flawed. - jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18This seems like a REALLY great idea...Maybe to start it off, start importing all the GNU/Linux articles from Wikipedia?

http://www.howtoforge.com/ - EXTER, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13If you look at the Linux article ( http://www.thelinuxvault.net/index.php?title=Linux ) you can see that it's an exact copy of the Linux article of Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux ).
- Philluminati, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12import may not be a great idea. I think "interpret, check and rewrite" into one more cohesive style would be good though. (Although Cohesion by lots of different people may be hard)
- X111, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Yes, let's digg an empty site to the frontpage. Because lord knows we need another linux tutorial site. Want to contribute? Join any of the many many forums or howto sites instead of waving your own flag.
- cfuse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9We don't need more - we need better. I'm so sick of documentation that requires that you know exactly how to do the thing in the manual before you can understand the manual.
- selrahc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9But everyone should have the option to learn it if they would like to, no?
- jonesin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Why is decentralization a bad thing? Seems to me that just like with the distros, documentation sites can compete based on quality, and the best ones will be most popular. This encourages quality documentation, something Linux is in need of.
- gavintlgold, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The point is that it gathers wikipedia articles about linux. (that's one step)
- ToadLeg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You may be able to contribute your knowledge via email to a website for something related to Linux, but you would not be able to edit the actual pages written about the topic.
I think your first sentence implies that it costs money to submit edits to this wiki and therefore doesn't make any sense; it doesn't cost any money for someone to add information to and edit pages on this wiki, and it does not cost anything for people to view the content, so there is no "cash in" and no "fooling". - judsond, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Also, they don't seem to even be showing ads right now, and they are licensing under the GFDL (free license) so I don't see what the complaint would be.
- bacchus101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5http://www.google.com/linux
- jacquesm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7second that. we really don't need *another* linux documentation project, if these guys want to go and expend the effort then go and help out the folks that are already doing this. Fragmentation really leads nowhere. Just because you can do it again is not a really good reason to do so, better one good repository than two meagre ones.
- derleiermann, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Any effort towards better documentation and help with Linux is very warmly welcome indeed!
Hope this flourishes :) - HalFTW, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Start off my making a skin for Mediawiki so it doesn't look like another half assed wiki startup.
- Nachoes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Was about to post that :)
- pumpedvideo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7freaking spam got on front page. All duplicate content from ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux
- triplehelix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3the issue, is that some people don't know how to do it.
- AvengeX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yup, that's pretty much the point of a Wiki. Everyone else collaborates and contributes.. any problems? (See: http://wikipedia.org )
- kettle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Potentially interesting, but they need a far more thoroughly developed mission than 'collect all the linux documentation'. That seems a bit overly naive considering the potential scope of such a statement. How about something a little bit narrower and more refined, at least at the start?
- ChuqAU, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not sure what this has to do with Wikipedia. Perhaps they just mean a Linux Wiki?
- allywilson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hence the purpose of the root of this particular conversation - to teach people how to do it,
To be honest I think the best resource for learning Linux (atleast for me it was): Gentoo Handbook. Very down to earth, incredibly detailed, best damn how to I've ever read.I read it all the way through - and wasn't near my PC at the time. - thefinger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I can just see the edit wars. They'll put Wiki to shame.
- muffinmanpoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Could it be... sarcasm?
- delusr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2WTF - I just setup mediawiki given it a title changed the logo, now can everyone else add the content as there currently has none ROFL.

voila! The Linux Vault.
Seriously though, a centralized location for all things Linux Distribution related is a great idea. I just can't believe no one has done this before. - nixfu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The Linux Documentation Project which has been around for more than a decade since before Microsoft windows even had tcp/ip built in... for the win. Still the best place for general linux information, and how-to's.
http://tldp.org/ - unsolicited, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Everything created by human beings should be reviewed and refined.
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2But, but, but, it's a wiki!
- muffinmanpoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I agree. Everybody should just innately know everything.
- triplehelix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2users can't edit that site though?
- gavintlgold, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Oh come on, compiling isn't that difficult. And It's so fun to run "svn up" every 5 minutes when a dev is developing.... :D
- EruLabs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well, that blocks me out... My "linux vault" is a closet with a ventilation system and a gigabit switch that...
At least its in my apartment, damnit! - harlowsmonkeys, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3From "The Zen of Programming", by Geoffrey James:
Hearing a disturbance, The master programmer went into the novice's
cubicle.
"Curse these personal computers!" cried the novice in anger, "To
make them do anything I must use three or even four editing
programs. Sometimes I get so confused that I erase entire files.
This is truly intolerable!"
The master programmer stared at the novice. "And what would you do
to remedy this state of affairs?" he asked.
The novice thought for a moment. "I will design a new editing
program," he said, "a program that will replace all these others."
Suddenly the master struck the novice on the side of the head. It
was not a heavy blow, but the novice was nonetheless surprised.
"What did you do that for?" exclaimed the novice.
"I have no wish to learn another editing program," said that master.
And suddenly the novice was enlightened. - gfnw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, that was exactly what my comment was about.
Choice sucks, long live the Linux regime! - qwuinc, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1Doesn't Wikipedia have wikiprojects and categories for that, though?
- vault, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2How dare you insult 92% of digg users!
- gfnw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nah couldn't be. Diggers are smart, they would get sarcasm.
- muffinmanpoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not saying 'ftw' ftw.
- monkeywaffles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"The linux wikipedia"?
Linux: Too unoriginal to ***** come up with their own ideas.. ever
(yes, I kid, however this idea is just lame, or am I missing something?)
And, all these distros already have their own wikis, and this site seems to barely have any content. Why is this news? - buggu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A centralized location isn't really required. Most of the time, the technical tasks are distro-specific, and since the way of working with a Debain system is different from working with a Gentoo system - it only makes sense that you would go straight to the distro's own website rather than a place that documents all the distros and sift through all the options to find what you are looking for.
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1man man
- monkeywaffles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1GFDL is not free at all. Its an awful restrictive license and honestly makes no sense for wikis.
Read the bloody license and check the terms. Wikipedia themselves don't even follow the license fully (and admit it on several of their own pages on the topic) - jer2eydevil88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That site needs a forum to ask questions on... that way good posts could become part of the documentation and even so-so posts would be indexed by google to help other users.
- trzynascie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1gentoo-wiki.com
We don't need another wiki. -
