- benjic, on 10/11/2007, -80/+146When will you guys learn not to use "Killer" like this. It wont kill the iPhone because first, it isnt Apple, second, its ugly as sin, and people dont like cheap ugly linux devices.
- tokage, on 10/11/2007, -20/+65Oh, c'mon. It's not THAT bad-looking.
Definitely worth a few minutes of play-around-with-it time. - garths, on 10/11/2007, -11/+44I lined up at 3:00AM today at the Moko Store to get one of these suckers. A lady offered me $2000 for my place in line, but I wouldn't have it. I have to have my Moko! I've been waiting for months for this sucker. The pre-release review in the New York Times was glowing. The pop culture references in TV shows are non-stop ("Elaine: Can you put that stupid thing away? Jerry: No loko my Moko! Kramer: Bwa bwa wa wa bwa Moko!"), and all anybody ever talks about is the Moko.
iPhone who? - sully213, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30Blame Wired for the "Killer". It was the title of TFA.
- Nozzle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31This says it all, from the article: "The next revision (GTA02), which will be available starting at $450 in October, will be ready for the mass market. It will have wi-fi, 3-D motion sensors and added graphics accelerators. So this phone isn't exactly an iPhone killer -- the next one will be a contender."
- KielKilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22Why are all these devices killing eachother...
- AlanOrozco, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24This is the developer version. The consumer version will have WiFi and a better processor.
- algaris, on 10/11/2007, -5/+26No matter how it looks, at least I can do whatever I want with it.
- kevinskok, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22Looks like an open-source suppository
- TheIinLive, on 10/11/2007, -14/+31I remember iPod killers...like the Zune.
- santaliqueur, on 10/11/2007, -6/+22Article Headline: "The $300 Linux-Powered 'iPhone Killer' Arrives"
FTFA: "So this phone isn't exactly an iPhone killer"
Make up your ***** minds before we click on the link. - brycelb, on 10/11/2007, -13/+29I guess this is an easier way to get your article to the top. Just put in "iphone killer" and off it goes.
Buried for being ridiculous. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+21Hey dude is that an OpenMoko Neo 1973 Phone?
for some reason that doesn't roll of my tongue like 'iPhone' does - BryanJK, on 10/11/2007, -10/+24Its nice, but it'd be nicer if it had Wifi and a faster proccessor
- AnthonyC, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Stuff like this will only promote innovation. I am all for it.
I just bought a WM5 device a few months ago, and while I LOVE the amount of stuff I can do with my phone, I think Windows Mobile is terrible, given the fact that its been around for so long. The iPhone and linux driven devices will force MS to get off its ass with their mobile platform, and we will all benefit by innovation in the market. - Tainek, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Has Wifi, Has 3D, and its open source thus skinnable, and no 2 year tie in and its cheaper to start with. RTFA for gods sakes.
- h4mx0r, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17Ugly? You guys are so harsh with your sense of fashion.
It looks pretty neat to me... minus the hole at the bottom. - selfdisplaced, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17Oh...it's the phone I've seen a billion times before on digg. Nice Find Sherlock!
- UtahApocalyse, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14Does anyone check for ***** dupes anymore??? jesus a christ this is the 3rd time this made the front page today. digg is going to ***** *****.
- martyFREEDOM, on 10/11/2007, -10/+19It is a developer phone. It is no where near iphone killer status. Nothing is.
- whygohome10, on 10/11/2007, -9/+18buried
shut up with iPod killer and iPhone killer. why does it have to be about that... it just stirs up stupid fanboy arguments. - jennamalia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8There's a difference between OpenMoko (a GNU / Linux based open software development platform) and the Neo 1973 (the phone that you're looking at).
Conflating the two is like saying that all Toyotas are ***** because the Scion looks like *****. - omarciddo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9$300 (openmoko) vs $600 (iPhone). Yeah, thats ***** identical.
- selrahc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7They come to life at night, when we are all asleep, and wage wars against each other.
- Dakart, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Since we're talking about technology... If they were selling wood and didn't know how to provide for a high traffic site I would forgive them.
- catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10I would rather have the Openmoko and Ron Paul people on here than Mr. Mainstream who bitches about every little thing that deviates from your little bubble of reality. There are phones other than the iphone and candidates other than Barack and Hillary
- BHSPitMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yes, I believe that's basically the point.
- MISDIREK7ED, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10LOL... people who invent things really need to check into meanings of words before launching.
Moco, in Spanish, means "Booger." I know, it is spelled differently. (but hey, so was the Chevy Nova.. or No va - "You do not go" in Spanish) I'm betting this product doesn't sell well in Spanish speaking areas... - Bucketshred, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8It's called the bloody article mate
- burtrito, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Australia, Asia and Europe have had 'iPod Killers' (does anyone actually like that Killer term) for well over a year now, all running Windows Mobile 5 or 6. HTC produces the majority of these touch screen Phone/PDA/GPS all-in-one units, but Asus and many others are also in the market. That is why when news of the iPhone first hit our shores, we were all like "yeah, so what?" They may not sync with iTunes out of the box but they do a heck of a lot more.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9openmoko is the OS
Neo 1973 is the phone. like the Nokia 6600.
People will just refer to it as The Neo.
This is just a developer model though. The official Consumer phones will start coming in October. I believe you need to wait for version 3-4 before they have everything you would expect. - omarciddo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Holy
*****
*****.
What is with digg lately? Every day you can see any given story up to five times, sometimes at the same time. wtf guys. Come on. - neodorian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Not to mention that the story about the Spanish-speaking market panning the Nova has been debunked plenty of times. They even had a popular gasoline at the time called Nova. It's not the same word. It's like saying the Wii didn't sell in the US because it's a homonym of wee or whatever. Some people make a ban pun but it does little to influence anyone's opinion of the product.
- nobogeys217, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5If it was available through other carriers then it would probably take a significant market share. Apple's mistake.
- sancho320, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5A bigger picture for you look at more closely.
http://www.pro-linux.de/NB2/images/indiv/FIC-neo1973.png - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Hey dude, its called google. Give it a try sometime...
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The problem is that if a digger with lots of friends post something, that story will get dugg regardless if it was covered during the day, last week, last month, ... It *will* get enough to reach front page status, and then all hell breaks loose once it's on the front page and the big masses that doesn't look in "upcoming stories" see it. I see it as an inherent problem with Digg.
- BbIT, on 10/11/2007, -8/+12i wish it would kill the iPhone literally, so i dont have to hear about the ***** thing. ***** apple, and anything with a lowercase "i" before it.
- techweenie, on 10/11/2007, -8/+12It is to the iPhone what the Zune was to the iPod. "Killer" might be an overstatement.
- Ap31r0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4did you just hit on him?
- mrhyperpenguin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4lets just hope that it'll have those features in the next version. remember that this is the model intended for developers.
- turnlikeawheel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4iResentthat.
- tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I want to see what happens when the Beryl/Compiz folks get their hands on one of these.
- 12340987, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3will AT&T t-mobile or any other provider sell it? No? Then how will people even know about it?
$450 is a lot for a phone, unless it's subsidized or an iPhone. - schotty, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4the hole is for the lanyard cord. But yes, I have held them (at IBM's office in Chicago at the FlourishConf this past April). They are slick and pretty cool units.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This is just the first implementation of OpenMoko. FIC was first to the market, and they aren't really an innovative company.
- takamalak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Oh, so it's going to be fugly forever?
- mbreese, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You must be new here...
- Billions, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Well then, this is not an iPhone killer yet. Maybe in the fall, when it's ACTUALLY AVAILABLE it will warrent 3 redundant Diggs in one day, and at that point I will look into it more closely.
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Again another fanboy. Why the ***** do you think they would jump into something that hasn't been proven? Oh that's right, it's from Apple so it must be like from God. Crawl out from Steve's ass and try to think independently.
