I see Frozen Bubble is up there... I'm a FAQ contributor at GameFAQs, and I have been trying for the past few months to convince the site admin to get Frozen Bubble added in the database, as that is one of the more popular Linux games. It wasn't accepted. And the reason is --
Frozen Bubble 2006-02-01 10:18:26 Rejected
All new game listings require a publisher and developer
I've tried this also with Cube and SuperTux, and I get pretty much the same response. They have to have a publisher and developer, and a commercial one at that, as my next four game data submissions have information about the developers who published the game on their own -- all rejected as well.
This locks out a lot of potential Linux games from that site, as most of them only publish it by themselves, not through a commercial publishing company. GameFAQs is the most popular game FAQ repository on the internet, and we aren't getting due Linux game representation on that site. And that game list shows that Linux games are good enough to be recognized. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Many (if not most) of these games are available on Windows as well.
This isn't a collection of Linux games. It's a collection of open source games. - ucczen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12They aren't. They're simply trying to bring attention to the fact that some very fun games(and very free ones) can be played on Linux. Not to mention the fact that many popular games such as Tribes 2, the Quake series, and UT.
- Nadinengland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Well at least linux users have a massive range or games. 209 is more than 6 for the mac hehe. http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=2282754844569110939&q=mac+gamers
- Devz0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Linux is perfectly capable of being a games system. It's just that many commercial game makers don't care enough about Linux.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@chris9902:
"seriously, don't try and pass linux off as a games system. it's embarrassing."
Uh...this wasn't meant to be a "Linux is great for gaming" site. More of a "If you have Linux, here's some gaming suggestions" site.
Nice try tho. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Another game I frequently play on my Linux boxes is Alien Arena 2007, just to add to the list: http://red.planetarena.org/ :)
Awesome free FPS. - Serinox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6most appreciated :)
- ubuntudemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Which is part of :
"Ubuntu Document Storage Facility"
http://doc.gwos.org
gwos also hosts "Ubuntu Gamers Arena" :
http://gaming.gwos.org - smohan123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Windows for gamers, period. Even if you own a Mac, you'll sooner use Boot Camp and run Windows to play games than buy a native Mac game.
- maxime94, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Native_Games
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I just submited ours (won't name it so people won't consider it spam). The other two are Planeshift and Runescape.
- raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's funny.... about 15 years ago, the Amiga never made it into the business world because everyone thought of it as a gamer's machine.... now Windows is regarded as the ultimate gamer's operating system yet we just can't rid ourselves of it at the office.
- Simon80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/
Another deathmatch FPS with decent graphics - Simon80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3err, double post... might as well make this useful by mentioning tremulous too...
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That list is far from being complete. I know at least 3 other MMORPGs (one of them is ours) that are not listed there.
- sporkwitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The problem is DirectX, pure and simple. The vast majority of games are dependent upon the DirectX system, which is Microsoft proprietary technology, and, gee golly wow, M$ won't let any other operating system use it. As long as developers choose DirectX over OpenGL, then Windows is going to have its deathgrip on the computer gaming industry. You'll notice that the few big-name titles that are listed there all have OpenGL support.
This applies to MAC as well. As long as the game supports OpenGL, it can EASILY be ported to MAC as well as to *nix. - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2just because game companies use windows
doesnt nessesarly mean that all games work best on windows
windows has some great games but linux has many casual free games for the family
and for more of the violent games linux has a few
linux might not have battlefield 1942 or something from wildtangent but it has many devs wanting more games out
and the great thing about linux
no lisencing fees for game companies - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2radu you should submit them to the list then =)
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Linux is perfectly capable of being a games system. It's just that many commercial game makers don't care enough about Linux."
Exactly! It's called market share.
I seriously know no one who purposely installs Linux to game on it. That's why I continue to use my Win XP box - for access to unsupported software and functionality that Linux does not provide. But it's still nice to have some games on there to help you procrastinate. :) - sq377, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.warsow.net/
My personal favorite, Cellshaded FPS. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I told the site owner to add a game. He did, but he also told me to post this here since he's not a digg member:
If either of you have an account on digg could you please let the guy in
the thread asking about ut2k4 know that the url has been altered so that
he won't see it (the license tag was added for people to use it, not for
links like this to be covertly switched to free games only). - Vironex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Love seeing Marathon on that list.
- AstralSin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this list is by no means comprehensive. pretty lame really, phocion is right though, download alien arena before you download any of those other games. its by far the best and most commercial quality (free) game available for linux.
- nixdoctor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The list is deficient in some ways, but a nice effort. Worth a digg.
- DrBob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@aeon17x
You could submit your guides to StrategyWiki (http://strategywiki.org/). They'll happily take any games, from arcade to Counter-Strike: Source. :-) - shakeyshakey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm sorry, games on linux?
Excuse me while i laugh.
/linux user - mrbiotech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0More than half the links I tried in the list are dead or outdated.
- riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Killer games indeed. Too bad I still have minesweeper and freeCell on windows to compete with most of these..
- jacenat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1war§ow is nowhere on the list
unreal tournament 2k3 and 2k4 is missing too (didn't ut99 also have the linux binaries on the release disc? ... can't remember :/ )
and what about the quake and doom series?
this list isn't so great imho ... i never used linux and can instantly name more than 5 games that should be on that list ... - cer0s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0http://strategywiki.org/
Fixed the link.
A better wiki for Linux games specifically is http://linux-gamers.net/. - vsingleton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1His link to Marathon is b0rken ... have one?
- Nadinengland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1in reply to ucczen:
I ment to say that but i remembered that video. ;) - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1iyho - in your humble opinion lol
- vsingleton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Hey, Tremulous is pretty rockin game.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1But like only 5% of the 209 games are fun.
/linux user - vsingleton, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Tremulous is at http://tremulous.org/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5"Linux is perfectly capable of being a games system. It's just that many commercial game makers don't care enough about Linux."
It's not that the game makers don't care, it's that there are not enough Linux users who'd buy these games for Linux.
Also, as much as you may prefer OpenGL, the fact is that DirectX is one of the most important contributions to gaming that Microsoft, or any company, has ever designed. The innovations that are included with the next iteration of this tool are already deemed invaluable by the most influential game development companies (for example, the makers of the upcoming game "Crysis"). So, in a sense, while Linux (with OpenGL) is capable of being a good game system, in other ways it is also inferior to Windows. - V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -19/+7Very few of these games are awesome that aren't commercial professional releases. It's one of the things we who run Linux knows.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -23/+8yeah there way better than Half-Life 2 or Spore...
seriously, don't try and pass linux off as a games system. it's embarrassing.
