- einfeldt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+75And, of course, James has made some changes in the way that he handles some of the material coming through his facility, called ACCRC.org. So it is not all just a Digg effect, although the fact that the government came to its senses after the first digging 12 days ago, make me think that the popular media (us diggers) did make the government think twice about its position. Remember, this same facility has been operated by the same guy for many years, and has been inspected annually since opening. So it makes you wonder why, this year for the first time, they felt that they had to threaten him.
But the fact that these regulators responded to feedback from the public shows why democracy and Free Open Source Software matters: Digg runs on Debian Linux, and Kevin Rose has said many times that he could not have started Digg without Linux. So here is a Linux site (Digg) helping a guy who gives Linux computers to schools, non-profits, and poor people. Awesome. - Sensai, on 10/10/2007, -2/+41Dugg so that they can see we're STILL watching.
- niallabrown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+34He is a hero. Intentional obsolescence by companies like Microsoft is a major environmental concern. And computers for kids is an amazing way to turn some of that negative in to a very positive thing!
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -5/+34{Slashdot effect} > {Digg effect} (it made both), but whatever made the difference, this is wonderful news!
linux pwnz feds!!11 - justok, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22they're both the same size in my browser.
- ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17I thought it was going to say that we crashed the California Government. That would be an all time high for the Digg effect.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21Again...if you think that Digg had ANYTHING to do with this, you all need to come back to reality before it is too late.

- brim4brim, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Your joking right? Large number of users noticing injustice does make a difference as it causes the risk of public back lash at an organisation be it from mass emails to them complaining about it or a tv or radio station picking it up and helping it spread further until the company/agency gets a very bad reputation.
It is more effective than any government appointed regulator and I've seen it work several times in my country to force companies to recognise a problem or make the government act on a problem they were trying to ignore. - baalzebub, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12great! this is good news!
- Fordi, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Digg + /. = Teh WIN!
- kahlessreborn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It didn't survive
- SpencerMc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Phail. Masturbation is a noun. A modifier would be an adjective. Go directly to 4th Grade English. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.
- HUKI365, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Actually Digg is a bigger website than /. - but I agree, it wasn't just Digg.
- modusop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I remember a couple years ago there were a lot of posts about when the Digg effect surpassed the Slashdot effect - we're well past it here by now.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's nice to see the digg effect being applied to help others. It can't always be shenanigans and time wasting.
- Andy.D, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No matter who is responsible, the outcome is great.
- Velnich, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4redundant adjective!
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Some feds use Linux too. But I assume you meant "the feds" as in the ones bribed by Microsoft lobbyists to keep US institutions stuck with Windows/Office/proprietary document formats.
- Gsicht, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Dugg because I misread 'Diggers'.
- slyydrr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not to nitpick, but I think he was referring to the post-read actions carried out by the viewers of the two sites rather than the size of them, but it's my needless observation for the day.
Either way, this is great news because my heart definitely dropped when I read this original story. - Lymphocyte, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The only time I've ever seen (noticed?) these "Look at what we did! Go Digg!" articles are when the original stories were front page CNN articles (and they were always on CNN well ahead of being noticed on Digg). I love Digg and all, but I suspect that a few high powered reporters have a much larger effect on getting things changed than people Digging an article.
Unfortunately, I feel that these "Look at us! Go Digg!" articles give the false impression that clicking on a Digg button in a click-and-forget fashion equates to activism. If you want to make a difference, go out and make a difference (and certainly some of us do). Volunteer. Devote some positive energy to a positive cause. After of clicking on a Digg button, rescue a computer from a landfill, install Ubuntu, and donate it. That would be a Digg effect worth celebrating. - GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The problem would have been fixed in the first place. The guy just had to prove he wasn't dumping the computers, and he did. We had nothing to do with it.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Inaccurate. The government moves slowly, which is why this issue came up at all, and why there's no way some people clicking on numbers on Digg is fixing it.
He failed to secure proper permits for what he was doing. That's why he was in trouble. He's working to get the permits, and then he will no longer be in trouble.
These processes are in place for a reason, and it's not so they can waterboard some guy who wants to give away Linux boxes. It's so you don't landfill waste in warehouses or storefronts for example, and so dump operators can't claim recycle credit by saying they are "temporarily storing for recycling" the stuff they are in reality piling up forever as waste. - quinnk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Err no, I would call this the CNN effect. Digg and the fanboys had nothing to do with it.
- einfeldt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2@Kenlovino:
Here is the back story:

And he has also been named a CNN hero for helping so many schools and non-profits and poor people get computers:

(sorry, there was a mistake in my link the first time I posted) - peppino, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2Apparently you guys don't like my comment about bringing some good monitors, laptops and computers, to James, so he can give them to the poor. I guess it's not a digg worthy comment?
- daridave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yes, but NOT the digg effect. As much as I love the site and the community, I don't think "digg users PWN govornment" will make the headlines [elsewhere] anytime soon. :P would be freakin' sweet, though... heheh...
- oddtom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Right. Because merreborn is more influential than digg, right?
Since merreborn has maybe one friend, and digg has tens of thousands of viewers.
Yeah, definitely the merreborn effect. Certainly not digg. Keep tooting your own horn, merreborn. Everyone cares what you think. Seriously. - Velnich, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2incorrect use of the work adjective!
(adverb I suppose, my bad) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1random acts of attention
- geddon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Can we get someone to do the same thing with cellphones?
- jeremiahx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2/. FTW!
- jambarama, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Come on, lets be honest. This is because CNN picked up the story, not because of digg or /. - you may say CNN picked it up because of digg or /. but digg picked it up because someone submitted it - should we hail them?
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2The Digg effect refers to websites going offline due to bandwidth in general. Just because we knock websites offline doesn't mean we have any kind of serious political cloud.
- Velnich, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Indeed, I was more right the first time, but then I confused masterbation with to masterbate.
- KunalHS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0He donated 16000 PCs. Its like BIG companies lost that much of business. or may be Dealers in that area. So they may have initiated ....
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The fact is Digg is no more contributing to the solution than a newspaper article or 15 second news program coverage. It sheds light on stupidity, publicizes a dumb decision, so they scramble to fix.
Now if digg were to focus on something important like the millions of children that won't eat a nourishing meal today, that would be a digg effect worth talking about.
Otherwise it's just arguing triviality... - einfeldt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1@joemad:
There are Microsoft fans on this list, and there are also paid Microsoft Astroturfers. But there are more Linux fans than Microsoft fans or Microsoft paid Astroturfers. So don't worry, you will be dugg back up ! ;-) - Sensai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1No, of course not. But are you really ignorant enough to say that Digg doesn't have any influence at all?
- pyrates, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1And remember to not vote for him for the cnn local heroes, he wants the guy whose trying to save the gorilla's to win.

No, he had all the proper permits, and he had been inspected many times before, with no problems. It was just that a new inspector showed up this time, and she was maybe trying to prove herself. But she went overboard. This was a case of misuse of government discretion and authority. And IMHO, Digg and /. played a role in changing that. - planetknown, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0There is an error in your link. The correct link is
http://digg.com/linux_unix/How_to_easily_survive_t ... - einfeldt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1All I can say is that they were not working with him until the news of their enforcement actions against him hit Digg and /., and they the sure changed their tone.
- geddon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1This is the reason why we need to extend the Open Source philosophy to Democracy.

Thanks James!
We have about 7 or 8 working monitors, a couple of working laptops and a working PC on the way :) - spikelee33, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Thanks I reposted it already.

What is Digg?
