- cloakeddagger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16powerful stuff, once you know bash you'll wonder what you ever did without it... comes in handy daily, even for just regular desktop / internet stuff....
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Heh, I've had this in my bookmarks for well over 2 years.
It's great for automated testing where you need to run multiple tests over long periods of time and log the results as you do. - jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9http://en.tldp.org/LDP/abs/abs-guide.pdf
pdf version - SGagnon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"This tutorial assumes no previous knowledge of scripting or programming, but progresses rapidly toward an intermediate/advanced level of instruction . . ."
Perfect for my scripting challenged co-workers :-) - vuke69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The default shell in redhat(and just about every other linux distro) is bash. So you should be fine.
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've had the PDF copy of this guide on my desktop since revision 1.8 and highly recommend it. This is so comprehensive I don't think I've ever searched it and not found what I was looking for.
- Rivetgeek, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9God hates you, kill yourself for using an arcane shell.
- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4stupid question. I wanted to start learnign and was curious if I need Solaris or should red hat linux be fine. I know linux does come pr laoded with bash.
- curmudgeon7205, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It does, however, assume morfe than a passing familiarity with Linux/Unix commands/CLI
- nicstevens42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Look up your own scripting guide or write it if it isnt availble. The topic says bash, not "unix advanced scripting guide"
It would be silly and much to large to write a comprehensive guide to every scripting language or shell out there. A lot of shells/scripting langs have different theoretical bases and principles of operation which would make such a guide difficult to understand for the neophyte and too bloated for the advanced users. - PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Love this lulu thing!
- PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does this book come in paperback? Or something similar? Id love to have it!
- aydo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This has been posted so many times that I am going to take the time to learn it now.
- Craz1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1download the PDF & print it
- croupier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've had this guide bookmarked for quite some time - it's very useful for finding an answer to your bash programming needs. A lot of times i'll be stuck on how to do a particular item and just ctrl+f on this page and there's my answer.
- ziruzhu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This guide is really good. Add it to my bookmarks as a reference page.
- mivok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You can get the paperback here: http://www.lulu.com/content/176217
- Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. This is what I taught myself Bash scripting with all them months ago. Fine piece of lead-you-in-by-the-nosiness.
- johnnyrotten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is it with guide writers that they never do a really good job with $* and "$@"? This is better than the one from last week, but it still doesn't do a good job. We should just get the bash maintainers to make $*, $@, and "$@" expand to the same thing. Even Steve Bourne has agreed that these were a mistake.
- RTLM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been using this thing forever. GREAT resource for all your bash scripting needs.
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1did this look like "The Advanced Bush-Scripting Guide" at first glance to anyone else?
for bushism in "google" "the internets" "mission accomplished"
do
set -- $bushism
echo "$1"
done - rgnl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ubuntu and debian have it in the abs-guide package.
- yock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'll dig it, even if it shouldn't really be news. The ABSG has been around for years and is an invaluable resource for anyone poking around a Bash console.
- RetroRufio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"Advanced Bash Scripting Guide - Using Perl?"
:-P - till, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5What about us sh/csh/zsh lovers? :P
- Innatech, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1(deleted, wrong tab, dig down).
- bagwaa, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2nice guide! :-) although its not perl :-)
