- vinceislegend, on 09/28/2008, -1/+52There is no "best" Linux distro. It's all preference.
- inactive, on 09/28/2008, -6/+29"BUT, BUT, BUT, WHAT ABOUT [insert name of stupid, unheard-of and irrelevant linux distro just so you can pretend to be original, 1337 and wiser-than-thou]"
- Spr0k3t, on 09/28/2008, -0/+22Where the hell is the "Show me the list on one page" link?
- thelastknowngod, on 09/28/2008, -2/+21arch is probably the easiest distro i have ever used. im looking at you ubuntu. ;) arch has a single config file for managing network settings, modules, daemons, language, etc. it is always up to date and you never have to upgrade to a new release. really simple.
- Protoss, on 09/28/2008, -4/+20ArchLinux!
- GarrettGrimsley, on 09/28/2008, -1/+15"Added for clarity - while the list is numbered, it's not a countdown from best to not-so-good. All 14 are great."
Try reading the story - bagboyrebel, on 09/28/2008, -2/+14maybe a mac would be a better choice for you.
- sanderton, on 09/28/2008, -2/+13I don't think this is supposed to be a top 14 with no 1 being better than no 14 - it's just 14 exmaples of different distros and their uses.
- inactive, on 09/28/2008, -3/+13Try being less of an unemployed moron who wastes time on compiling an entire OS from source, and actually turn into a productive member of society, and then get back to us.
- vp0ng, on 09/28/2008, -0/+10KDE isn't a distro, it's a desktop environment like Gnome. :)
- neodude237, on 09/28/2008, -8/+18Buried for multiple pages.
- oilcan, on 09/28/2008, -0/+10I'm no linux expert but I'm pretty sure KDE is a GUI for linux distros and not a linux distro itself :)
- matx, on 09/28/2008, -8/+17If you think Ubuntu is good you probably haven't used GNU/Linux for very long.
- uskomaton, on 09/28/2008, -0/+9It's #1 on smart peoples list tho.
Besides, they are not in order anyway, 1 is as good as 14, if you read it, you would know that. - subgeniusd, on 09/28/2008, -4/+12Yeah I don't like being forced to click through 10 pages either and print doesn't go to print view. But the content is very good and informative so just let it go.....it only takes a half minute of your precious time.
They should have included Vector Linux IMHO but I suppose the same could be said for many other distros........any "best of" distro list is just an arbitrary snapshot of the current state of desktop Linux so whatever. - inactive, on 09/28/2008, -3/+10lmao what a dumbass
- mizatt, on 09/28/2008, -3/+10We don't give a ***** why, we're annoyed by it
- 4321234, on 09/28/2008, -1/+8Although I personally don't like Ubuntu, I know a couple people who have used linux for ages and love Ubuntu. But I dugg your comment for it's antifanboyismness.
- courtjester555, on 09/28/2008, -0/+7Easy is kind of a relative term here. If you don't need wizards or UIs to set up a system how you want, you have a different definition of "easy" compared to a Linux noob. Specifically, editing config files isn't easy for many Linux users
- inactive, on 09/28/2008, -0/+6The list is not ordered.
- Cerebron, on 09/28/2008, -1/+7Unused memory is wasted memory.
- jlimon, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5If people want to spend their time developing their own distros, that's their choice. You can't force someone to start coding an alternative to GIMP or Inkscape because you don't like it.
If you want something done, better get busy coding. - amfantasy, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5If you think Linux should have one main distro, you have no idea how it works. Linux is like the platform and companies take that platform and build their own operating system around it.
- secrity, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5CentOS is JUST AS stable as the corresponding version of Red Hat. People choose CentOS over Red Hat because it doesn't require a support subscription.
- uskomaton, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4"normal non techie" user has their own distro, it's call Mac.
- adrames, on 09/28/2008, -3/+7Dugg for Slackware. Linux OG!
- init100, on 09/28/2008, -1/+5The article claims to be posted 12 hours ago, but it claims that "Fedora 8 looks like it could change that". Please, Fedora 8 was launched almost a year ago. The current development version is Fedora 10.
- dirtman777, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4.any "best of" distro list is just an arbitrary snapshot of the current state of desktop Linux so whatever.
That is true. I missed Simply Mepis being included there also. That was the one that got me hooked on Linux. - uskomaton, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4Choices, some love em, some don't.
- SolidSnak, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Yes it will run on your crappy old computers and it doesn't require compiling.
- paulmer2003, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Rofl. Newbie? Hey *****, I've been a Gentoo user for almost 5 years now. I administer multiple Slackware, Gentoo and OpenBSD boxes. So yeah, why don't you take that newbie ***** and stick it straight up your ass.
Anyway, no it's not Mandriva. It's Mandrake. Although, a newfag like yourself probably doesn't know what Mandrake is. :) - frostw, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Solaris != Linux
- cdigioia, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Excellent, excellent point.
- thecheatah, on 09/28/2008, -2/+5Really? I think Ubuntu is good. Yet I hate the way they treat there kde users. Any recommendations?
- klitzbtc, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Just want Ubuntu needs, another port.
- spc4, on 09/28/2008, -2/+5Dugg
Its nice to be able to read the differences between the distros. - dark_helmet, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Says the user person with the Arch Linux logo as their avatar..
- init100, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3"paginating articles mean more ads get served."
As a user of AdBlock+, I'll probably hold on complaining about the pagination. Yes, the pagination is stupid, but I don't have to watch any ads. :) - sneezy555, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3It's snobs like you that make users stay away from linux.
- uskomaton, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3I still think Debian was #1 for a reason :p
- trogdor282, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3firefox repagination extension
- peestandingup, on 09/28/2008, -2/+5Only 14?? Send this to those who you're trying to convince to switch to Linux & then you'll realize why it will never work.
- BiIlyMays, on 09/28/2008, -2/+5Honestly, the reason why I believe that ubuntu is the best, is because so many people use it. There is such a thriving online support community, that with about 30 seconds of googling you can find the answer to any question you need. This may be with all others also, the only other one that I have used was Fedora 9 for a bit, but I think that the online community is what puts it above all of the rest.
- computershack, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Which part of "Added for clarity - while the list is numbered, it's not a countdown from best to not-so-good." did you fail to understand?
- inactive, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Digg users don't see ads.
