- canadaboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Is it allowable to boycott Apple on software freedom day, or just Microsoft? Can we boycott Adobe, Oracle, Salesforce.com, and the other pay-for software and services as well?
- youareretarded, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Why not boycott apple products? They are more closed than MS.
- stotty, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9One day you will die. And on that day you will ponder on how you wasted your life trying to preach a message that really won't make a difference.
The motivated and technically minded will find Open Source without the sermons and lectures and choose to like or dislike it accordingly. The average Joe will most likely never care so long as his/her computer is easy to work with. Why would they care to join a boycott MS campaign and make their life that bit more complicated without a tangible benefit? - CYR1X, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Buried for title.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Please spell check your blog. Don't forget to spell check the posting. Also, what is "| Klets", is that anything like "| grep"?
- VulnoX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Why just boycott MS? Why not Apple as well? They have the same damn business model and don't do anything for free. Hell they charge more than MS on some things too.
You want to do some open source software day or whatever thing that will go unnoticed by 99% of the world, thats your call. I love Open Source software, I use a lot of it on my laptop. But at least don't make yourself look like just some lonely guy sitting in his basement with a picture of Bill Gates on your dart board just because you hate Microsoft. Be an equal opportunity hate monger. I know its easier than to just celebrate anyone or anything that helps bring the hobby many of us enjoy to more people. - Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5One reason to boycott your ISP: no it's not.
- chazuk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5http://www.kletskous.com/wp-content/plugins/deans_fckeditor/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/teeth_smile.gif
Microsoft are teh suck but their smilies are mighty fine! Only kidding!
I'm sitting here watching a TV programme, recorded with Vista Media Center and it's being streamed to my XBOX360. Do I love MS? Hell no. Do i love that all my devices can function like this? Hell yeah! The whole open source movment is fantastic IMO but one sided blogs like yours do put me off quite a bit. Sorry if you don't like this reply but I just had to read your opinion and you have now had to read mine. - thecosmicpope, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No. They are allowed to charge for products. Only Microsoft shouldn't. Don't bring you relentless logic here.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Great spelling anyways, you ***** tard.

- EXreaction, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You are a dumbass.
How do you get the idea that trying not to please the customer at all will make them the most money? If they were as greedy as you claimed they would be dead already, and they certainly wouldn't have extended the warranties on the Xbox 360's like they did, which is something they did not need to do at all. - sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4"stay away from it"
Isn't that what a boycott is? - jmg0420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3HAHA!!! CELIBRATE
- VulnoX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I hope this guy does not own a car. I mean talk about paying and paying again. First you have lease payments, then gas, then insurance. Just pay pay pay.
I don't know how he gets through life. - EXreaction, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yep, buried because 9/10 are stupid. What Microsoft does with standards sucks, but there are other ways around using their proprietary formats.
- BrandonPerry, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It isn't down for me, but there are a lot of misused words in there.
FTA: When the licenses experience.
Otherwise, great article. I have been running Ubuntu since 4.10, when it was about as good as the rest and can safely say I love it for a Windows alternative in the home. But for business, I would not recommend it. I would prefer to use OpenSuSE or Fedora 7. Those two are much more business oriented than Ubuntu.
For the schools, I gave my mom a computer with Edubuntu installed for her classroom and now, all the teachers in her school want one. People just don't know what Linux is or what it can do, so they are scared of it. Once people are introduced to it, it is amazing the things they will give up (ie Windows.) - yournamehere, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I call ***** on this:
3. Microsoft makes people pay and pay again..
The costs of a Microsoft operating system are not recognizable for the user, because they are calculated in the costs of the computer. The operating system however, is very minimal and to use the computer, people need at least Office Software. In The Netherlands, costs of MS Office vary between around $ 300,– and $ 600,–, depending on the version.
openoffice is free and is comparible to it's pay to play counterpart. Windows itself costs $$$ only once. I've had XP on my laptop for 6 years and havent paid a dime since i first bought it... which it came with the laptop so it was dirt cheap. - erikerikerik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3wow, after looking at your history http://digg.com/users/Kletskous/news/dugg you really do hate MS don't you.
What did MS ever to do you? run over your dog or something?
Also for the love of god (and my eyes) try formatting your type so its easy to read. - thecosmicpope, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I always wondered how easy it was to get your blog on the front page of Digg, now its clear. Type up (badly) some anti-Microsoft stuff, throw in some Linux blow jobs and then submit. Easy publicity.
Buried for multiple reasons. - sinfony, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think I"ll "celibrate" Software Freedom Day by trying to install the NVIDIA drivers in Ubuntu. I know from experience that it will probably take most of the day.
Seriously, I'm a bit uneasy about Microsoft's draconian business tactics, but the fact is that they make pretty solid products. I've been running Ubuntu dual-booted for a little over a year now, and from a usability standpoint, it just isn't up to par if you want to do anything more than run Firefox. Sure, there are certain tasks that I've found Ubuntu much better for (file/web server, for instance), but they're not the kind of things the typical user is ready to handle.
There's a ton of great free software out there, but let's not kid ourselves. Gimp does not compete with Photoshop. OpenOffice does not compete with MS Office. What's wrong with using the best tool for the task? - slimbooty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Why does it matter to you if other people buy microsoft products? I run both Linux and Windows - both are good at doing their own thing.
There are some gems in this blog:
"Microsoft makes people pay and pay again.." - wow, a company that wants to makes a profit
"The limits of the user agreement (Eula)" - Don't use the product if you don't like the Eula
"Microsoft is into aggressive marketing campaigns in developing countries:" - that whole profit thing must bother this guy
"There are great free alternatives to Windows" - so tell us what they are and why we should use them instead of boycotting Microsoft
"Microsoft is lazy" - *****, talk to any developer at Microsoft - sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Dugg down for having an ugly and annoying avatar
- sinfony, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If I had a dollar for every time the NVIDIA installer gave me the "API mismatch" error message, I could buy every part of Adobe CS3 full retail price.
- Worldchrisis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Spot on.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Please fact check it when you get around to it too. The crap you write is speculation for the most part.
#1 - Prove MS did anything. The ISO choosing the answer you don't like does not mean anyone held a gun to their head.
#2 - People need virus scanners and spyware scanners because people are stupid.
#3 - Microsoft only make people pay "again and again" if you buy a "subscription" to something. That is the nature of these things called "subscriptions". You don't HAVE to use MS Office, you make the choice to do so.
#4 - Microsoft puts more time and effort into backwards compatibility then gay pornstars.
#5 - Microsoft, like every other corporation including such "favourites" as Apple, spend lots of time and money accumulating and defending patent arsenels.
#6 - Microsoft is lazy because Vista took a long time to create? Perhaps you could stop for a minute and think about the size of Vista, it's not exactly the uber cool program you wrote after school that does simple math calculations.
#7 - Everything phones home these days. Apple software, Microsoft software, Linux software. When your computer checks for an updated version of anything it has the ability to send any information it want. Microsoft, like the others, does not send any personally identifying information without your explicit, on the spot consent.
#8 - One license doesn't cover every computer in your house. So?
#9 - Boycott Microsoft because they market in emerging countries..... right.
#10 - Alternatives are not a reason in and of themselves to boycott something. - Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1iChoonz iz in ur keys... eatin ur medias.
- canadaboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Ahh! Thanks for the clarification. I was so confused after reading the post! :-)
- frazw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's not that they don't aim to please the customer, it's that they don't put enough effort into producing a quality product and fill the gaps with marketting strategy.

- burty89, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You should fact check your comment too: "The ISO choosing the answer you don't like does not mean anyone held a gun to their head."
ISO voted not to fast track OOXML, so they didn't choose the answer people here wouldn't have liked. However there is clear evidence that MS did attempt to sway the vote in their favor, it just didn't work (thankfully). - thingalon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0How does poorly researched crap like this make it to the front page? When writing articles in future, please start out with research, and finish up with a spell checker.
- Yokwe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Gotta love Digg.. if you support something others hate you are a fanboy. If you love linux you are a linux fanboy if you oppose it.. you are a MS fanboy.
I do have to disagree with the forced to upgrade to new versions of MS Office bit. I can open any version I want it does typically require a free plug-in download though.
I will quit using MS for my primary business system when the software I desire is supported on other platforms....and no a kinda sorta equivalent is not enough. To me there is a huge difference between PS and Gimp just as there is between Quicken and Money.
Quite frankly the OS is the cheapest software on my system and not the only buggy one. Heck my stupid media buttons on my keyboard have been broken for over a month because of Itunes.
Bottom line I use what is most convenient, so for my business system that is Windows. - erikerikerik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I actually just dug you up!
and yes your correct, but I was more writ ting along the lines of just stay away from it, and not even waist his time writ ting about it. - slave25637, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2If you dont like microsoft for the same reasons in the article, go right ahead.
i happen to like windows, and I dont mind paying for it. - SrDigger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0if just the T-shirt was not that lime green
- VulnoX, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1No, you have to say you are boycotting the biggest company otherwise you may not get noticed and your life's work will be for nothing! Quick pay attention to him otherwise he may get bored and actually go out and do something to benefit the world!
- depl0y, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Here is what I think of your list, point by point...
1. I agree, standards are not standards in MS's eyes. They should fix the standards IE7 is not working with. As a developer I run into IE problems every day.
2. You are claiming Linux is much safer but where is the explaination about why it is safer? I really don't agree on this point. The minute Linux and MacOSX gains a larger market share, they will also be targets for mallware creators. A good example is Firefox, when they had only 1% of market share they weren't targeted, but now they are getting some real market share and you can see mallware creators moving their focus also to Firefox.
3. You only pay for newer versions of the software, there really is no need to upgrade your OS as often as a new version appears. They are a company selling software and like any other software company, newer versions need to be paid for. Did you get your Adobe CS 3 for free when it was released and you already purchased CS 2? Or even better, when you purchased Photoshop 5?
4. Microsoft is not in compatibility? Ok, so now you want to show me how good Mac OS 9 applications run on your new Intel Mac running Mac OS 10.4.10 ? You have a much greater change of running Windows 95 applications on your brand new Vista installation.
5. Can't really comment on this.
6. Vista is more than a simple GUI upgrade for XP. Look under the hood and you will notice a lot more differences. For normal users, things might look only a bit different, but when you are a more advanced user you will notice a lot of differences.
7. Lots of commercial software phones home, this is just the way it works nowadays. Windows sending personal information to MS is just a rumour started on blogs like this :). If it would really do this, don't you think some geeks with networksniffers would already have found out? (I consider me one of those geeks too).
8. They are talking about other versions of Windows in their EULA. You even quoted the text from it and it clearly states "it is possible to install another version of the operating system". With the operating system, they are clearly referring to Windows.
9. Can't comment on this.
10. This point actually makes your blog post even more funny, ofcourse it is ok to promote other software than Windows, and there is no-one stopping you. I myself am using MacOSX more and more often, but some things are just underdeveloped on other systems than Windows.
For example, I use Visual Studio every day. It is by far the best development studio on the market today. The Windows API's are also pretty good to work with, they are documented excellent and it's not all that hard to get you started.
Now when I just want to type a document or a spreadsheet, I take Office 2007. For me this is the best Office suite around, just because the easy way it works. Ofcourse, I need to shell out to get me upgraded to the latest version, but when you don't demand the latest and greatest you could still use your Office 2003 or XP without problems.
Ow and also, show me alternatives to my games I want to run. Tried plugging my Bioshock DVD in my Linux machine, but heck, it didn't run. Tried running it through Wine and all his brothers & sisters, but what do you know? No luck so far! :D
So no, there are no alternatives to Windows at the moment. Ofcourse this is not perfect. I would like to have all my applications also run on my iMac (which I got @ work), but these OS's aren't ready yet for the market Windows had at the moment.
Ow, also : did a clean install of Ubuntu 7.04 this morning, restarted my laptop and got a nice "No screens found" error from my video driver. Had to log in through command line, fix my xorg.conf and reboot my machine to get it running in X again. - frazw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0A day for NVIDIA drivers? Seriously? That's 20 min tops.
- frazw, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Sorry dude but most of what you just said is BS.
#1 Check YOUR facts there is evidence of this all over the place. Just because it paints your fave company in a bad light doesn't mean it didn't happen.
#2 People need virus and spyware software mostly because of microsofts mistakes in the past (monolithic design) carrying through to their current versions.
#3 They do force you to upgrade by withdrawing support for older operating systems which suffer from the same monolithic design issues and are extremely vulnerable to attack. But I don't hold that against them they are afterall a business and you can't expect endless support. BUT Another point here and possibly the most valid is directx 10. There is no reason, other than trying to force people to upgrade, not to release dx10 on windows xp. In reality in this case it would be the game developers doing the forcing, but they thankfully have the good sense not to because, as everyone knows, at the moment vista is a steaming pile of performance hogging, ***** with plenty of bugs flying around it.
#4 Microsoft want you to think backwards compatibility is good, it only really is between 'parent' and 'child' eg XP to vista or 98 to XP. Even then compatibility is not good because they are trying to shake off the past and head towards a limited privileges model rather than their starting point of full privileges. That means old apps need special dispensation to get access to things they shouldn't in a modern windows environment, hence the introduction of compatibility modes. Other OS's always had a multi-user limited privilege model meaning this isn't an issue for them.
#5 Yes they do, but threatening people with patent infringement but not detailing the infringements to enable them to challenge it or if necessary rewrite the software is like robbing a bank with a banana in your pocket, pretending its a gun. It is designed to scare the non-MS community, basically it is corporate terrorism.
#6 Vista is big yes but so comparatively is Mac OSX or any *NIX or BSD distro etc. Why should MS be let off that hook just because you like them. As an MS user I am extremely disappointed because Longhorn looked significantly better than vista turned out to be. The delays were just ridiculous and look at the pile of turd that crawled out of the end of the whole process. Would you really choose Vista over XP? If so I question your sanity. MS have been traditionally slow with bug fixes even choosing never to fix some fairly major issues. Is that not lazy?
#7 Ok everything phones home, but you should be allowed to opt out of that let alone being asked if personal information is to be sent. I have no evidence to suggest MS break the rules here but they do have arrangements with e.g. firewall vendors to give MS processes a get out of jail free card. When XP was newborn I spent a long time trying to prevent an MS process from getting out onto the net but simply couldn't do it. I couldn't figure out why until I found this out. The firewall software I was using saw the rank on the program's shoulder and just saluted as it walked right on by. I would of course be just as annoyed if other OS's did this but they don't and MS seem to forget that it is my computer and they should defer to me and be glad I chose their OS, but that is not enough for them.
#8 Ok one license per computer is reasonable but you missed the point. The license is prohibiting you from installing another OS on THIS pc not the other one. If you buy a pc with windows pre-installed, they do not want you to replace it or make it share. Is that not like saying it is really their computer and you just have use of it?
#9 Their tactics in these markets are anti competitive and intended to produce long-term lock-ins. It doesn't matter how you cut it locking consumers in is bad, it kills innovation and allows sloppy programming. They know they produce inferior products so they need to protect their market share with anti-competitive tactics instead of raising their game. Very sad. Windows could be so much more if MS had better business ethics.
#10 True, alternatives to not provide reason to boycott but they do make it viable to do so.
I cannot see any reason to buy vista except DX10. XP is great now. It is stable, fast (compare to vista), runs everything I want and I can take measures to compensate for its vulnerabilities. MS used to do software well but now, not so much. If they conducted their business ethically and put more effort into their software products I wouldn't have a problem with them.
The enchantment with MS and its monopoly seems losing its grip on the world and perhaps they should stick to what they are pretty good at. Peripherals. - frazw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0MS supporters will always be MS supporters, Linux supporters will always be Linux supporters, and Apple supporters will always be Apple supporters. That is never gonna change unless you experiment with all three with an open mind and look for the good in each instead of the bad. If you can't see one good thing about the other OS's you can call yourself a fanboy with pride.
Most comments on digg show absolutely no open-mindedness at all. It's ***** tragic. - JasonCox, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2"The only solution to this is non business oriented, free and open source software."
Here's a serious question for you. Lets say in the future Linux and F/OSS get 90% marketshare, do you really think that F/OSS will still be as agile is it is today at 3%? And we're at what? 250 distros now at 3%? So thats what, ~7500 distros (of Linux) at 90%? Sorry, had to poke some fun. Digg me down. :-) - depl0y, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0I even took the time to reply to a linux fanboy? Damn!
