- smithco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I use Gtalk. It's simple, small and easy to use. I like simple, small and easy to use.
Years ago I stopped using IMs precisely because the clients got complex, hard to use and resource hungry. GTalk may be a little ugly, but it's exactly the sort of IM client that I like to use. - pedru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Gaim and Kopete do not support Google Talks Voice features. This will change with gaim-vv. When you are talking about clients working with Google Talk (almost [didn't manage to get it to run on centericq]) any jabber client will do.
- troublemaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7A _lot_ of people.
In case you mean the gTalk *client*, then I have no idea. I use iChat for gTalk conversations.
I've always hated MSN for all the bloat. Commercials, animations, sounds, vibrating windows.... MSN also blocks all URLs containing "download.php", blocks all "dangerous" filetypes (including .JPG, .MP3 etc), disconnects me every Nth minute (regardless of my location/connection).
***** MSN. - CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have a patch for the latest Kopete 0.12 beta 2 so it supports jingle so I don't need this app. However its another great alternative
- a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Installed this on ubuntu. It just has basic features of chat and voice with a nice & easy GUI. I haven't tried voice yet, but will tonight. If this works well, then this app for linux is ahead of the rest of the IM's trying to integrate gtalk services.
- linickx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5GAIM or Kopete don't support the voip features.
- silenceHR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good, i like Gtalk cause it is so simple. and i like the fact that Google is helping Linux.
- kevin.gc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Heh, I use GTalk, but my buddy list is pretty short.
- Arevos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The majority of people using VoIP, I suspect.
- The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I use "GTalk" via Adium, mostly because i have a Gmail account, and i like XMPP as a IM protocol.
So I'll be using the voice features if/when libJingle is ported to OS X, and ported to use CoreAudio. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Kopete 0.12 most definitely does support google talk voice, aka jingle.

Yes, I'm talking about the client. But a little about the protocol as well. As soon as it gets more networks federated I think it will be awesome, but it needs a critical mass. - zaph0d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Tapioca is a real beauty! It's frickin' awesome :) Thank you Tapioca Developers! You guys rock!!
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jingle will win. Google practically guarenteed it by releasing the source and excellent documentation on how it works; it was exactly what the entirity of the Linux community has been needing, and Google steped up and provided. Since there really /isn't/ any other VoIP system that works so simplistically (yeah, Skype, but it only interoperates with itself; if they add a Jingle plugin for Skype, then it'll be a contender), and it can be integrated into any application, there's no reason not to use it, and my bet is it'll take off, especially as more clients start to integrate it.
Who knows, maybe it'll spur more innovation around the Jabber Protocol. Whiteboards, simple games (checkers/chess/scrabble?), these are all things missing in the IM world for non-Windows computers. Jingle's the first step into making it happen. - eyequeue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is incompatible with dapper, as it tries to remove dbus (and all that depends on dbus).
- wyattearp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I cerntainly hope this will promote the acceptance of the Jingle XMPP thingy whats it so the people writing the jabber servers will have a standard to hop on board with
- zima, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A lot of people. (yes - it is quite strong in few parts of the world) In the form of XMPP/Jabber. Because, contrary to what you've said, GTalk Jabber server is for some time "federatet" with all other Jabber servers in the world. Apps like this permit easy VoIP interoperability between all Jabber users. (and BTW, thanks to transports/gateways, you can use Jabber client (inlcuding GTalk) for text message interoperability with any other IM network)
- eyequeue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where is the gnupg key for the ubuntu repository (for use with apt-key?)
The packages (plural) from that repo can not be authenticated without it.
It would also be nice to have a dapper-compatible repository. - nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll give it a spin when dapper stable goes live in june, but I think I'll probably end up using the new Gaim/Gaim-vv client instead...'cos I really like Gaim.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll give it a try on Ubuntu Dapper today.
- jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Niiiice.
- jvimal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is pretty good stuff!
For Shaastra, Zeppelin, Equivocate Coecelanth and Durbatuluk :)
http://jvimal.wordpress.com - kendals, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tapioca is awesome. Unfortuntately, many users like me are having the problem whereby the sound our contacts here sounds like carpet rubbing against sandpaper...we can hear THEM fine, though ....
- snooo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Huzzah! I can make free phone calls, give invites to all my friends and finally dump that buggy piece of crap Skype.
I hear they may start offering beta versions of Linux updates, with no support, but from their forums it does appear that their development effort has been scaled back quite dramatically. Ah well, its an unreliable bunch of crap anyway. - zachtib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so do i, but until gaim-vv gets merged, gaim doesn't have any voice support.
only thing id like to see in jingle is a minimize to tray option... - idiggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess we can expect an ebuild soon.
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-3204053.html#3204053 - mdshort, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yea, gaim is merging with gaim-vv to support these kinds of things.
Can't wait for 2.0 to be out.. though it won't be voice/video capable, it lays the groundwork for it. - kundojjala, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0try jabbin,gizmoproject...both support gtalk voip feature
- julieBi, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1This is very cool!!!
For some good Ubuntu tips I think this is worth a look
http://www.fixya.com/support/p926113-canonical_ubu ...
Hope it helped a bit. - hastings, on 10/14/2007, -2/+1Why install anything: http://theswitchboard.ca ? PC to PC calls and conferences, MSN, ICQ, AIM IM support, and works in any Java enabled browser. It doesn't get much easier than that. No danger of Linux support falling behind, because it is all the same code base. In fact the app even works on OS/2!
- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1gtalk while it maybe small it uses alot of memory sometimes, more so than complex clients.
- sixones, on 03/30/2009, -6/+3Why not use GAIM or Kopete? They support GTalk! Someone needs to make a decent msn messenger IM app for Linux though!
- samstr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Once they design it properly and start directly competing with MSN garbage/Live Messenger trash Google Talk/Google Messenger will really take off. With any luck!

http://www.wirah.com - Neme, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Trillian is probably a good bet too, it uses very few resources.
- Genius16, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1tood bad >I< dont support GTalk's voice feature. who the heck uses PC to PC voip anyway?
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -23/+6Who uses Gtalk? Seriously.
