Sync your iPhone Wirelessly in Linux
lifehacker.com — Apple may open up its iPhone and iPod touch devices to third-party apps next month, but the chances that Linux users will get invited to the party are slim at best. That hasn't stopped some intrepid hackers from coming up with a better music-syncing solution than the one Mac and Windows users have—a two-way wireless transfer

- OrangeSoda31, on 05/10/2008, -9/+3I was amazed this wasn't supported natively.
- RobotBuddha, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3There's a million bits of functionality provided by 3rd party devs that I can't believe they didn't include. In particular, for me, downloading podcasts directly onto the iphone. The whole process of syncing something downloaded from the internet anyway is such a waste of time.
- SitPoMk, on 05/10/2008, -8/+3wireless ..oh you're making me blush
- iRelinquish, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1that was a cute comment, i dont know why people are digging you down
- sarixe, on 05/10/2008, -2/+14but will it run rockbox?
- piratehead, on 05/10/2008, -9/+13Totally not worth it. Apple makes it hard for Free Software users to use their products, so screw them!
- danjwray, on 05/10/2008, -2/+3i would be with you, if only free hardware had come remotely near as far as free software has recently.
- MattBD, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1I like the look of the iPod Touch, but I'm put off by how hard Apple make it to use their stuff with Linux, so I'm inclined to wait for an Android phone.
- luchid, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1How many cellphones are there for which you can load Linux on? Maybe .5 percent of all?
- MattBD, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Well, that's why I said Android as that's Linux-based.

And it offers much more than just syncing music. - uncwidiot, on 05/10/2008, -10/+4The article is about wireless syncing in Linux yet it starts out with how to jailbreak your iPhone/iPod touch in Windows or OS X. For a guide aimed at Linux users, they should probably provide a way to do so within Linux (if possible, I don't have an iPhone/Touch so I wouldn't know).
- iRelinquish, on 05/10/2008, -0/+4first of all dont talk, about what you dont know. Second of all this is the only way to get an ipod touch or iphone to work on linux. there is no native support.(iTunes)
- gamerzfuse, on 05/10/2008, -2/+3well.. that IS a great idea..
Maybe Apple should have implemented it from the start. - Serial0Hacker, on 05/10/2008, -5/+5Now I just need to get an iPhone.

- MarkSwanson, on 05/10/2008, -1/+8Disclaimer: I own ScheduleWorld.
Patrick Ohly, the author of SyncEvolution (which is an excellent SyncML client for Evolution) ported SyncEvolution to work on the iPhone. It only contacts sync atm. Once you have a SyncML client on the iPhone you can sync it with ScheduleWorld and keep your Linux/Windows/cell phone/etc. in sync.

Cheers. - Poofainter888, on 05/10/2008, -17/+1Ahh...poor Linux users have to do it themselves again, sigh. Maybe because it's a fringe hobby OS? Just a thought...
- mvent2, on 05/10/2008, -0/+19Actually it runs low-cost portables, phones and servers for multi-billion dollar corporations. But you keep thinking that.
- danjwray, on 05/10/2008, -1/+15Also, good luck syncing wirelessly under OS X or Windows. Linux actually has better support than either.
- Ellipsys, on 05/10/2008, -3/+15Nice hack. However, I'd still really appreciate it if the iPhone could act like a $2 USB drive and just mount as a mass storage device that can be synced with any music player, on any OS, anytime. Even simple copy/paste functionality !
- lineweight, on 05/10/2008, -3/+3bitches! ;)
- Avian00, on 05/10/2008, -6/+4To start, let me just say that I genuinely WANTED to love this! Unfortunately, this just sounds like too much of a duct-tape hack job to be anywhere near useful. And I'm not talking about the process. I'm willing to accept jail-breaking my ipod/iphone and installing SSH. But the instant they start talking about using Amarok to manage your music and GTKPod for Video and Photos, I just started thinking, "this all 'just works' in iTunes." I'll be the first to admit that the blame lies with Apple. But if you really expect this to appeal to me, than there needs to be a one-stop solution that replaces ALL of the functionality I (and MANY others) love about the iTunes/iPod experience. You can argue all day about the missing features or format support, but until somebody creates a total experience that's even half as user-friendly as Apple's I'm just not inclined to go this route. I'm willing to do the hacking effort if the experience at the other end is better than what I have now. But until then, I guess I'm stuck in the (actually quite comfortable) iTunes/iPod prison.
- iRelinquish, on 05/10/2008, -2/+7You obviously haven't used amarok before : )
- Avian00, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Yes. I have used Amarok. In fact, it's my default music player on all my Linux installations. It's definitely the best media player for Linux. But it quite simply doesn't create the consistent experience that iTunes does when syncing with my iPod. FIRST, Amarok only syncs music. If you want movies and photos, you must use another application (the article suggests GTKpod... which I already pointed out in my first comment). Second, I use my iPod almost primarily for podcasts. iTunes will automatically delete podcasts I've listened to and refresh it with newer episodes. It will also keep my entire music library in sync. I simply plug it in, wait a few moments and unplug it. Suddenly I have all of the latest podcasts and music on my iPod. Amarok, on the other hand, forces me to manage all the tracks on my iPod manually. That means always search for new episodes or new music and adding them to the iPod. As a standalone player, Amarok works great. As a platform for iPod syncing, it just sucks.
- xsacha, on 05/10/2008, -2/+0Using iTunes when you could use Amarok? Try out amarok and then do a repost.
- luchid, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2I've tried it, for about 2 months. It's one of the few Linux apps I haven't liked. At all. It's a "shove everything in your face" kinda UI job. Way too many panels, options, buttons and whitespace going on. I think the technical side of it is awesome though.
- iRelinquish, on 05/10/2008, -2/+7You obviously haven't used amarok before : )
- CCmachined, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1like any sane Linux user would consider buying a polished rotting-apple product. buried.
seriously, calling your feature product the type of device plus one stereotypical ***** letter? come on. - jplily, on 05/10/2008, -1/+0love this future and linux
- molom, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Apple is the business that doesn't 'think differently'. They are the most closed source people I've ever seen. They even built their stuff on Unix and they don't even give them some back by offering their software to be compatible with Unix (Safari and iTunes)
BTW This article is great!- boregard, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0That is why Apple is uniquely rich and successful. They keep tight locks on everything. Mac OSX is just BSD Unix, which is just like linux for you youngins
- ds|tan, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2two words : battery life?
- boregard, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Of iPhone? Most of the day. If you use it less,6,8 hours. Charges quick, like 15, 30 mins.
- ds|tan, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1no, i meant that due to the extensive use of wifi for syncing, what would happen to the battery? :P
