- billizm, on 05/06/2008, -1/+50I can't believe Sun is being chastised for taking their proprietary OS and making it open. Yea it looks like Ubuntu, that's because they both use Gnome, another open project. Solaris has been around since 1992.
- inactive, on 05/06/2008, -3/+52What a crappy title, linux after all is simply a kernel. The GNU tools are intended to be shared and used between OS's. Its as retarted as saying linux is a copy of FreeBSD.
- mr804, on 05/06/2008, -0/+49What a douchy title.
- an0nymous, on 05/06/2008, -1/+35A bigger ecosystem is a better ecosystem. Go diversity.
Good for SUN for going open. - motang, on 05/06/2008, -1/+26Here are the screenshots: http://www.thecodingstudio.com/opensource/linux/sc ...
- Knet88, on 05/06/2008, -0/+24OpenSolaris is based on Unix (I believe it actually has genuine Unix code in it), which is what Linus Torvalds tried to "clone" (for want of better term) creating LInus's uNIX. Really, Linux has been copying the likes of Solaris in some way ever since it came into being.
I think somebody needs to read up on who-made-who here (including me, I should double check my sources). - PurpleSfinx, on 05/06/2008, -4/+28There are people in here insulting Sun for copying Linux.
You know Linux is a copy of Unix, right? By a guy called Linus? Linus. Unix. LinusUnix. Linusix. Linux. See?
Visually speaking... It uses GNOME. Which IS the same desktop environment as Ubuntu... - Razed, on 05/06/2008, -1/+23Rah rah rah... How dare Sun release an alternative product for FREE to people that might be interested in something like that. The real outrage is that they use GNOME which is the same thing that Ubuntu uses. They just won't stop at anything!
- joffnz, on 05/06/2008, -1/+21Exactly. Solaris is a completely different OS, it just happens to use a lot of the same userspace tools (including window managers like Gnome) as many Linux distros. Unix has been like this, since, well, forever.
Buried for goddamn newbies. - sfDrummer, on 05/06/2008, -0/+19That would be because its using GNOME as the desktop. The colour scheme and interface widgets are quite different.
- anshuman, on 05/06/2008, -4/+23not just copying linux but they also want to pimp dtrace and zfs to everyone, so they do have their own bling to flash out.
- UKsHaDoW, on 05/06/2008, -0/+15The whole idea or the gpl and gnu is to share, change and use to anyone's desire.
- akilleen, on 05/06/2008, -0/+13OMG FreeBSD looks just like Linux! Copyers!
- inactive, on 05/06/2008, -10/+22well at least sun writes their own kernel. Redhat provide support, packaging and funds several open source code projects. So yes, sun does do more than redhat in terms of development.
- rhuxley, on 05/06/2008, -2/+13Ian Murdoch works for Sun and I believe he started Debian, so who copies who exactly
- jjgitties, on 05/06/2008, -2/+11i don't get this title. OpenSolaris is not new. Its been around a while.
- Jexie, on 05/06/2008, -1/+10Minix was a 16 bit outdated copy of Unix, he rewrote his own to have a modern 32 bit replacement for Unix. You're really splitting hairs there.
- oldman, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9No Linux is a copy of Minix, which is a copy of Unix. Actually copy is a bit of a misnomer, since each was coded from scratch to perform similarly, without the parent's source code.
- meltingrobot, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9You do realize that Redhat makes quite a few code contributions to the kernel, right?
- yetAnotherCroc, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9Redhat is the biggest single contributor to the linux kernel.
- Shadowgamers, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9lol, The Register
- axle, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9I just installed this yesterday in VMWare Fusion. One of the coolest new features is the combination of ZFS and the package manager. With it, you can upgrade the operating system or install/upgrade software. If something fails or you break something along the way, you can roll back the change. ZFS snapshots can be taken instantly, and rolling back doesn't take any noticeable amount of time.
- InorganicMatter, on 05/06/2008, -2/+9Interesting. This has the potential to be everything Linux is not. The fact that they are working hard on an imaging system, and the fact that it'll ship with ZFS says a lot. Their license could allow them to do some really cool things the GNU GPL prevent Linux from doing at the kernel level.
- jjgitties, on 05/06/2008, -0/+7That would be because they are using the Gnome desktop. Gnome have been available for Sun Solaris for years.
http://www.sun.com/software/star/gnome/ - killdeer03, on 05/06/2008, -0/+6Linux is the kernel, GNU/Linux is the entire operating system with applications... If they are "copying" Linux, they are taking a Monolithic approach to their kernel? mehh
*Smart-Ass gets dugg down* - init100, on 05/06/2008, -0/+5The proper phrase would be "inspired by".
- wattersm, on 05/06/2008, -1/+6We don't care.
- aaron.dunlap, on 05/06/2008, -1/+6Indiana? Why would you want to be called Indiana? That was the dog's name!
- altjeringa, on 05/06/2008, -2/+7I'm so sick of people blasting Sun. Solaris is hands down the most sophisticated and most stable operating system on the planet. Sun has contributed massive amounts of code to the opensource community, and they've contributed code that was proprietary, which means they've had to work around existing IP licensed from other companies. High end code, hardcore, polished code, code your not educated enough to understand code. Solaris doesn't get a new scheduler ever 4 dot dot release. It's has the best smp in the industry, it's the best debugging tools in the industry, it's also got this silly little thing called zones you should check out, makes linux virtualization and chrooting look like it was written by a group of monkeys. Linux is has it's place but is has always and will always be ghetto when compared Solaris ( well maybe not since Linus and co. will now have access to the source code of a real OS ).
- zohaibusman, on 05/06/2008, -12/+17Red Hat, which Sun called just a "packaging company"
I think sun is wrong. - ha1f, on 05/06/2008, -1/+5So, using open source software in an open source project is now considered stealing from Linux...?
...And Linux users wonder why no one takes them seriously... - rustyryan, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4what a crap title.. all these people need a history lesson
- zigurd, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4A tragically bad headline.
The gist of what Sun has done is to make Solaris an alternative kernel in the open source world, plus they configure it with things like ZFS that further distinguish it from other open source OS distributions.
This is exactly what Sun had to do to keep Solaris in the game. - AlgnPelotudo, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Actually, I like the idea behind the hurd kernel, it looks great (on paper), completely modular, cellular, interactive odular...
but yes, it would probably never be finished. - yetAnotherCroc, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4In all honest I dont think we will ever see a finished GNU system. If Hurd could get half the developers that Linux gets then we would probably be there by now. But as its stands... noone particularly cares about the Hurd. (Except RMS and a few others) Why reinvent the system yet again when we have a free and open kernel that works now?
- maninalift, on 05/06/2008, -2/+5There is no wrong in marketing
- wattersm, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3So what? You can run GNOME on just about anything.
- UKsHaDoW, on 05/06/2008, -2/+5This the first major release.
- samoan27, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3When I started using Linux 12 years ago the best versions were just freeware copies of what Sun had put out.
- itomato, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2(Open)Solaris *IS* UNIX (TM). It's not "based" on it.
"...genuine Unix code..." Seriously!!
Sources you want, sources you get: http://www.levenez.com/unix/history.html#10 - achoi, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3more like theregister is wrong for looking to trollbait. Liking solaris/opensolaris does not mean hating linux. Only a sith deals in absolutes.
- HayString, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Fire!
- motang, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2I wonder why Sun didn't go with the Java Desktop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_Desktop_System ). I though it looked unique, hopefully you can add it after they system is installed.
- sailor, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1All very true...but it will go nowhere as opensource project unless they make it usable for the desktop...it appears they are working on that as evident in the screen shots. They need to think about video drivers, wifi drivers, media codecs and a host of other non-free type softwares.
- init100, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1"Their license could allow them to do some really cool things the GNU GPL prevent Linux from doing at the kernel level."
I guess that you are talking about ZFS and Dtrace, the two most commonly mentioned advantages of (Open)Solaris. But there are Linux alternatives for those. Btrfs is a file system in development that seems to provide much of the same features as ZFS, and there are several tracing frameworks that seem pretty equal to Dtrace, namely Systemtap and Oprofile. - InorganicMatter, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Yes, but ZFS has to potential to be the one unified file system that all operating systems use. Except for the fact that Linux can't use it. Between ZFS and the GPL-compatible alternatives, big Unix vendors like Sun, Apple, HP, the BSD project, etc. will go for industry standards.
- inactive, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Exactly.
Especially from Sun and Microsoft. No way they are in it for money. - itomato, on 05/07/2008, -0/+11992? Try SunOS circa 1982.
http://www.levenez.com/unix/history.html#10
There are ten years in front and behind Solaris vs. Linux. - subratabera, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I think they are targetting desktop users here. And simplicity means everything to a desktop user.
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Thank you for that, dropping random facts I mean. Your e-penis is still only one inch long, and AINL (AIX is not Linux).
