You can expect to receive your Solaris 10 and Sun Studio software media kit within the next 10 business days.
No... Thankyou Sun! - Limp_Trizkit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15But what's cooler than having a professionally-pressed copy of your free OS? And besides, it means you can use it as a master for all of your friends that need a copy.
Ordered. :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14And so does windows and linux. Give them all a try and see which are lying.

I DID NOT DO THIS - osirisothedead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Solaris is open source these days.
- anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Solaris is SysV.
99.995% of people who say 'Solaris Sucks' or refer to it as "Slowlaris" have zero actual, hands-on experience with it. I've been admin'ing production Solaris servers for eleven years. I also run Linux and FreeBSD, which are fine operating systems as well. I prefer Solaris, however. It's a truly mature OS. Elegant in its maturity, if you will.
And yeah, ZFS is freaking awesome. I consider it one of the most significant technological advances of 2006. Shame it's not gotten nearly the coverage it deserves. *All other filesystems are obsolete*. - breakaway, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14"Could of sworn I blocked you..."

- captainbeah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Solaris is probably more stable then Linux, and I'm willing to bet their compiler makes better code too. Still, I'm never leaving open source.
- Louisd11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Solaris is awesome. Junkmail02 what are you talking about. It's a free good operating system.
- 256byteram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"...the most advanced operating system on the planet..."
Doesn't Apple make a similar claim with OS X? - zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And then you have to find an Internet Cafe that will let you install it.
BTW, get it sent care of some Bar or Hotel, you can even collect from the Correos with your NIE. - eleven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Cancer.
sun.de.com would be "fishy" Read the URL from right to left. - AggieTales, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Junkmail
I just have to ask, if you think Solaris is *****, what OS do you actually like? - BigSlacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Especially now that is has ZFS. Coolest filesystem/volume manager anywhere right now.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nice. I really want to use dtrace to find bottlenecks in my code, plus try out ZFS. I just ordered it so there's no excuse for me not trying out Solaris. Thanks, sun.
- Blackmane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nope, I'm from the UK and it seems to let me through. 10 Business days.
Free stuffs great. - burndive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You could just download and burn it if you want.
BTW, anyone got a torrent? I don't feel like registering. - feaks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can select every countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe so i guess it's not US only.
- mlw4428, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Hey what's that sound? Ah yes it's the sound of every other digg user on here clicking the digg down button..
- CptZap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't worry, it's safe, http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp on the right side, under "Get".
- raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The day that they drop SPARC is the day that they're no longer a server manufacturer, I'm certain.
Sun is competing directly against IBM (also a chip maker: POWER, PowerPC, Cell) in the enterprise server market. I'm thinking that they're doing the open-source/GPL thing because they want to focus on that hardware even more than before Schwartz took over. Obviously, the "control the entire widget" idea didn't work so well for Sun, since they were very busy trying to balance their hardware focus (Niagara, etc.) with their software focus (Solaris, Java).
By putting their software in the trust of an active developer community (OpenSolaris, etc.), they have ensured that they can provide a better software product within a better hardware package at half the cost.
Plus, I just tried out Java 6 last night. Kick ASS, the best Java that they've ever come out with. Dunno if that's due to having recently open-sourced most of Java, or having put in extra-time for bug-fixes behind closed doors.
Things are looking up for Sun, even though they may be conflicted at the moment about whether to promote Solaris or Ubuntu. - anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well, unlike piddling little blogs (raises hand!) Sun has non-trivial resources behind it. they'll follow through, you can be sure.
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5personally, I use AOL CDs as coasters.
And as wall decorations! :D - Louisd11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Big Slacker your correct but they said "kit." So theres gotta be something good in the "kit."
- benbread, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's at sun.de, so i doubt it's US only - ask me in 10 days if my copy has arrived and we'll know for sure...
- eleven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@burndive Care of bugmenot.com:
U: notmebug
P: notmebug - AggieTales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://whois.domaintools.com/sun.de
it seems to be legit - anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3confirmed, not 'shady'. go to
http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/
you'll see a direct link to that precise page there, from the official sun site. it's legit. - sulf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solaris_Operating_System
- sulf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, good luck receiving DVDs after the link was featured on slashdot and digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now its time to digg some DVD's.
- anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3why would it need to be secure? They're not asking for CC or socsec or anything else.
- Seth024, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7This was on Slashdot 1-2 days ago. Diggers are getting slow.
- Ltgeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I did this about 4 months ago and I live in Australia. It took probably took about 20 days not 10 but it still came, so yay!
Edit: Ah *****, this comment is supposed to be a reply to the next one down (by PueSi)...gg digg comments - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does this dvd have ZFS on it? I haven't found anything on the website that said that ZFS was released to the general population yet outside of opensolaris.
- Mike_N, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So, I emailed Sun. This is the response that I got...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear customer,
Thank you for inquiring about the free software kit. The kit is currently on back order and is expected to begin shipping again in about 2 weeks.
Please do not place another order. We will process one order per customer in the order received.
If we have a problem with your order we will contact you. Each order and each inquiry will be reviewed by a customer service representative.
Best regards,
Your Sun Free Media Kit customer service team - Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've yet to receive mine as well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OpenSolaris's license isn't a true OpenSource license, it conflicts with the GPL thats why we aren't all using ZFS on Linux. Hopefully Sun will GPL OpenSolaris like they are doing with Java and Fortress, then we will probably get real ZFS support which MacOS is already changing to.
I understand that there is a ZFS FUSE project but FUSE based file systems seem slower and are probably not good for real storage. Is it possible to have a FUSE based root file system? - Mike_N, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now 24 days and still nothing. And I think that I was the 12th person to digg this too so I'm guessing that they got my order quick. It's just like the Vista Beta DVDs that never shipped...!
- RedViper1999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+223 days after I ordered it and still nothing.
- opiniastrous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone, just be aware that Junkmail is trying to fool us...
For a start, we all know the junkmail02 suspected of being anicejew has been around a lot longer than one day (whilst junkmaii 02 hasn't), and we know for sure that he's commented a lot of times (because they've been widely dugg down). Funnily enough, Junkmaii 02 hasn't actually commented on much at all, except for about 5 pages like this one, where he attempts to cover his tracks. You can also see that Junkmail02 has all the same friends as the (anicejew?) junkmail, and having tracked back through his comments, said exactly the same things at exactly the same times. Odd?
For instance, have a look here:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Illegal_to_use_online_nickname_in_South_Korea
and here:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Passwords_On_Post_its_You_Bet
Also, I've noticed that every time junkmaii 02 denied being junkmail 02, he's received exactly 5 positive diggs (except for on this single comments page). A strange coincidence? I don't think so. If you ask me, it means that he's got AT LEAST FIVE ACCOUNTS! -
