- mharvey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+288"all students would only use Mozilla Firefox"
Since one of the main ideas behind firefox is to give people the choice to use something different, wouldn't doing this go against that philosophy? - Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+127FIREFOX RULZ AAAAAH
/hyperventilates
Seriously though, I use Firefox, but this is the lamest thing I have ever heard: "Beckner is also hoping that through this campaign and through raising awareness with the help of students, he’ll be able to create a new club on campus for Firefox users."
A Firefox Club. Give me a *****' break it's just a web browser. That would be like having a Toaster Club, a club for people who use toasters. - miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -5/+74I'm bracing myself for the massively unnecessary browser war that is about to ensue.
- abid786, on 10/12/2007, -1/+61"There is no universal standard for Web page development and Internet-based application, he said."
There is, except lazy web developers do not follow it. - MrMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62and my college has IE, Firefox an Mozilla installed on every computer... the philosophy is that people get to choose.
- kkass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+56While I am all for make Firefox available, especially since I prefer it myself. But only providing Firefox is just as bad as only providing IE.
- dkoon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+55“It would be nice to have a place where students can come together to talk about Firefox,” Beckner said.
Are you fanboys ***** retarded? Come together to talk about Firefox!?! How about let's all come together and talk about this pen that we use? Oh and this university jersey that we all wear?
The Firefox Discussions
"Awww, you know when I use my "Firefox" last night, I clicked on a link and it went to the tab! oh man, how cool was that?", "yeah, last night my "Firefox" was rocking hard! It blocked 50 ads! OMG OMG!", "Guys! Come here look at me use my "Firefox"! See, I clicked the back button it went back to my last visited page! Jeez, Firefox is gift from heaven!"
***** man, how about you go make a firefox doll so you all can cuddle it when you go to sleep... IT'S JUST A ***** BROWSER. - Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -5/+44Someone needs to give him a good slap across the face. No one likes, nor does anyone need, a self righteous geek.
- Kavok, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31Linux club != Firefox club
Linux is a pretty niche thing, your best asset for using it can be another linux user. Groups help us identify each other and help each other.
On the other hand, what the hell would a 'firefox' club do ? - harvinator24, on 10/12/2007, -10/+35Cbarr is the example of why most people on digg dont get laid. ^^^^^^^^^
- nwoolls, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Are you certain on your use of parenthesis? I do not think it means what you think it means.
- Charlesbian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Wait a second, isnt this the same university with that "Appalachian State is HOT HOT HOT" recruitment video?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVENWl8uBeg
yes, yes it is. If I was firefox i would disassociate myself as much as possible with the 80s retro graphix - t3hprogrammer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19@ Cbaar
Did you mix order of operations with English punctuation? - MetalUnderShock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17oh my gosh, Sarge from Red Vs Blue totally saw it coming...
"... back during the Browser Wars!" - GDLaws, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I Like firefox and all, but what the hell would you talk about in a Firefox club after the first 3 minutes? And If he is seriously saying they shouldnt allow IE, he is retarded. It's sad, but there are still websites out there that don't support any browser but IE.
- Hurshai, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17I use Opera in Windows and OS X. IMHO it is superior unless you feel glorified using 5000 extensions of which 10 are useful.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That, and lazy web browser developers and standards creators. I would LOVE if pages rendered all the same in IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc, but they don't. And it's not just because some browsers support the standards better than others. There is plenty of interpretation on how to layout various tags. Not everything is specified down to the exact pixel.
- lazyeyesam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@ Kavok
The first rule about Linux club is that we don't talk about Linux club... - ziadoz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12At my university we have IE7, Firefox and Opera to choose from. The annoying part is though that Firefox is still version 1.5 (except in Web Development labs) and neither Firefox nor Opera store your bookmarks and preferences like IE7 do. That said I don't see as many people using IE as I do Firefox.
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9haha I thought that was them too...
I can no longer take this video seriously. - Alchemeron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Opera: twice as fast and half as pretentious.
- Amablue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm reminded of this comic...
http://xkcd.com/c198.html - blaze03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Although I can appreciate this guy's good intentions (I agree that Firefox should be used by as many people as possible), I'm leaning more towards the "It's Just a ***** Browser" camp.
- jme2224, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think most colleges offer Firefox on their public computers because there is no cost to them, so why not do it. Besides, most college students, tech-savvy or not already use Firefox.
- madmac625, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I have come across just as many viruses using Firefox as I have with Safari. 0
- Kyle660, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm glad there's nothing at all more important than using time and effort to promote a browser. No, really. I'm glad the world is in such great shape that we have nothing to fix except how people choose to access web pages. Starving and oppressed people should go ***** themselves because us civilized people have much more important things to use our time and effort on. Actually, ***** this person. What an embarrassing waste of time this is.
- StanleyKoolPrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7My ***** hero. Someone stick a gold star on this ***** forehead. And right next to it you can paste a "I'll never get laid" sticker.
- mflood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Wow. . .talk about a shock coming to Digg, just now. I live right across from this guy, in the same dorm. We go to the same ACM meetings (student chapter) and stuff. I've actually entered his little raffle, and stuff. Yeah, it's the internet, so no one will care, but still I have to say that's pretty awesome to see a story from "home" hit the digg homepage.
I'm totally famous, now. That's how these things work. *nod* - nanboya, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I have been hacked by as many malicious websites using Firefox as I have with Safari. 0 times, that is...
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9MrMacMan, with FOSS fanboys they'll tell you it's about choice but make sure to read the fine print.*
* You must use what they like, if you use another product which is as good or you simply prefer it more you will yelled at. See: Opera, various open source music players, etc.
Luckily, if you go outside of Digg and the Ubuntu forums you'll find some genuinely nice people who won't barrage you with their hypocritical propaganda and won't care if you like RythmBox or Amarok, or if you take Opera over Firefox. - kahrn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7IE isn't the biggest security threat to Windows.
The user is. - Amablue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't use FireFox because it's more secure. I use it because I can customize it any way I want, from the layout to the functionality.
- HotGore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This guy is never getting laid ever.
- richard2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7“There is no universal standard for Web page development and Internet-based application, [Thomas M. Van Gilder, director of technological support services] said.”
What is this idiot doing anywhere near a university computer network? Someone needs to direct Mr Van Gilder to http://www.w3.org/ . I bet he also thinks the combination of freeing disc space and de-fragmentation is the solution to every computer problem. - gback2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Someone posted "A Firefox Club. Give me a *****' break it's just a web browser. That would be like having a Toaster Club, a club for people who use toasters."
Just wanted to let everyone know that I have created a religion for people who like toasters or other kitchen appliances. It is called the "Church of Applianitology" Our official screen saver is flying toasters.
- mflood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Inkhead:First of all, I've only talked to the guy once. I'm not here just to hype his crap, or whatever. Secondly, your argument is basically that only the very MOST important things in this world are worth doing. If you can't save a baby while taking a bullet for the leader of your favorite country, you might as well just kill yourself now.
...yeah, mmk. Most people on campus don't know much about firefox. To help fix that, he tells them about it. Posts a flyer or two in the dorms, gives out a t-shirt here and there, etc. I'm looking for the problem with that, but I'm just not finding it. - padfoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@GMorgan:
Now that isn't entirely fair. IE7 is a fairly solid browser, not perfect by any means, but good enough for many people's needs.
Nothing annoys me more though when you get a web site that will not display in anything besides IE. I simply cannot use IE at all because i'm on a Mac you stupid freaking non-standards compliant web-site!!! - Kavok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I enjoy Opera more 'out of the box' but I enjoy Firefox more with the extensions and customization.
Adblock, Firebug, greasemonkey, gmail manager etc.. etc.. - fishmecha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Essentially he's demanding people not have choice in their browsing and it's not like Firefox is SO much better than Opera, Safari, IE7, etc.
And that's just wrong. - Icefreez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Burred for stupid college indecisive spam.
- RunningRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5WOW! That has got to be the WORST commercial I have ever seen. Is this even a legitimate University? I think it would have been better for them not to advertise at all!
Anyhow... back to the issue at hand. I completely agree with the statement "I Like firefox and all, but what the hell would you talk about in a Firefox club after the first 3 minutes? "
Seriously, is this guy REALLY hurting for friends so now he's just going to make up some pathetic club to swarm the nerds together or what's going on here? How exactly are they monitoring who is using what browser anyway (in regards to the prizes etc.).
The thing is, it's just a web browser... on a public computer. Does it really matter that much? I'm sure most if not all schools should and will offer both browsers, and there is nothing special about that.... they're both free (well, IE is only available if you have legit Windows OS.... but EVERYONE has that right?) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This kid is OBVIOUSLY a freshman in Computer Information Systems
"With Firefox, users can experience less viruses and spy ware, plus it is very personalized with various add ons, Beckner said."
Uh... No. Viruses have many other ways on to a system other than the web broswer.
"Other benefits of Firefox are that it is completely free and worked on by thousands of people, which keeps it more secure and more up to date than other browsers."
Cost of a browser relates to its security? Interesting.
"There is no universal standard for Web page development and Internet-based application, he said."
http://www.w3.org/ doesnt agree with Thomas M. Van Gilder, D[d]irector of T[t]echnological S[s]upport S[s]ervices. Not only can the author of this article in a student paper not capitalize the title of an individual, the Directory of Technology Support is an idiot.
I really hope App's CIS program isnt going to use this as propaganda for their program... That'd be suicide. - acceptab1euname, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Or maybe heave a girl into his lap. Guy seriously needs to get laid.
'Firefox Club'......pfffft. - nephilimx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My collage had a "spread firefox" poster on the wall, I felt pretty annoyed
bad enough seeing the spam banners online about firefox, but in real life its pushing it - nizzy1115, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15my university, UIC, defaults all computer labs including mac, red hat, and windows to the firefox browser
- hanpil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4While Beckner would eventually like to see Firefox alone on campus computers, it likely won’t be happening.
“We won’t be taking off Internet Explorer from our lab computers, as some Web sites and applications function better only within [Internet Explorer] over Firefox,” Thomas M. Van Gilder, director of technological support services, said.
IE Tab? I guess Beckner forgot to mention to Van Gilder about that. - ahsanfarhan22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5these students should focus on studying, rather than forcing people to do something they think will be better for them.
- Cbaar, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12I like Opera and the Seamonkey Suite the best (I haven't tried Konqueror yet, (I'm not a big fan of KDE (I prefer XFCE and WindowMaker))), but often use FF for many of its extensions (Adblock, Greasemonkey (Leet Key ;)).
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What a control freak I hope he doesn't get into government.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes Firefox is more secure than IE by some distance even going solely on reported exploits which are naturally higher on an OSS product that takes a proactive stand on security. Even the metrics produced by MS say that Firefox is slightly more secure than IE and those metrics have been condemned by everyone in the field as absurdly optimistic on the IE front.
If you are talking about Opera then yes it has fewer reported exploits but a closed source app nearly always will. We fix our bugs, we don't hide them behind closed source. -

What is Digg?
