- Xyrx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'll withold my digg for 72 hours... how does that sound? :)
- saleens281, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"PS.. for every bitch I've heard from a windows user about what's wrong with Linux, I've heard ten bitches about how thier windows box didn't do this, or broke that way....
Then they step over and don't know anything about Linux, and go "this is all broke cause my sound card doesn't get 5.1 anymore!""
And they're right. Rule #1, the customer is always right. If they feel that it's broken without 5.1 sound, but usable with some *insert windows quirk* then linux is broken... FOR THEM. The sooner the zealots of the communities come to grips with this fact, the sooner we can move on to the next level with linux. Either that, or as the previous digg story stated, accept the fact it will never be a replacement for windows, and that it will always have smaller share of the market until such a time that the majority of people are lookign for control vs. ease of use (right). - SirNuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No digg, for being 99% hype and only 1% content. C'mon, if you are going to release something like this give some type of infomation, or make the world a better place and not make pre-announcements. If at nothing else, make it clear it isn't something simple like a new distro.
- BurakkuChi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Spoiler grabbed from his first blog entry:
"It would seem to me that unless someone was just dead-set in switching to Linux, only then would they start to make the distinction between distributions and begin research and experimentation. The logical conclusion would be to just advertise Linux as a product, then explain the options available to the New User in the advertisement. The term “Distro Wars” did not come about in an off-hand way…there really is a war raging between many of the Linux Distributions and the haunting sound you hear wafting on the wind is laughter…and it’s coming from Redmond Washington.
OK wise guy…who’s gonna pay for this “advertising?” Good question. You are…and I am, and everyone that belongs to a Linux sub-community. You Like PCLinuxOS? Get with your Community and see if you can’t arrange for a portion of the monthly donations to be set aside for a local radio ad campaign. Your looking at about two thousand bucks for a weeks worth of 30 second spots. Of course that is based on what I know and what I know is the Austin Texas market. How would I know that? Because I am paying for the exact plan stated above…maybe as early as July or as late as…well as late as the 1.0 release hits the repositories. Not everyone can do that, I understand, but you can contribute a little to a fund that can. This is where the mouth gets seperated from the feet. Are you going to talk about it or are you gonna take the steps necessary to get ‘er done?"
Conclusion: hype.
Link: http://lobby4linux.com/WordPress/?p=10 - Dogmatix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Announcing: The Linux Segway Ashtray!
- JoePrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I were to predict what this announcement would be its this.
The one thing that has kept most people from linux I would surmise is its lack of multimedia capabilities out of the box so to speak.
Linux once again out of the box has superb support for hardware, you get on the net, browsing and there are tons of apps includes with most distros. But for someone whose a top level user, installing multimedia libraries even with ubuntu can be daunting.
Thus I predict an entirely opensource multimedia package bundled with linux that could effectively overtake windows strong hold in the desktop market. WOOHOOO
I am a huge supported of microsoft. - Stegano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3----------------------------------------
ubuntu is currently one of the friendliest distros, and I doubt that it's ready for mainstream use. It was a hassle to get media support for common formats. (mp3, mpg, etc)
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
Yeah if it _is_ a new distro good luck competing agaist Ubuntu. That is by far the most "deaktop ready" distro out there.
----------------------------------------
Ubuntu is all a lot of hype, guys you should try PCLinuxOS http://www.pclinuxonline.com/pclos/ or Kanotix http://kanotix.com/ for out of the box support for all plugins (mp3, flash, quicktime, wma, realplayer etc). Linux on desktop is becoming reality as we speak. You will forget Windows XP, it will blow your mind. - davidleeroth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ubuntu is currently one of the friendliest distros, and I doubt that it's ready for mainstream use. ubuntu already has this. I'm blanking on the package name right now though. - hyperation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Linux will mass a horde of penguins and charge at Microsoft's headquarter... I CALL FOR ZERG! OMGWTFBBQ!!!
Hmm actually, this could be very interesting...very. - speedyrev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know about you, but I'm stocking up on bottled water and toilet paper. This could be earth shattering!!!!!!
- brydude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2+digg because hype is fun.
- alphex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the internet has rendered me incapable of breathing, every time I see a new hype I have a heart attack, I've died 96 times in the past 2 years alone...
no seriously, sounds like ***** to me. - santaclaws, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is PCLinuxOS advertising. Look at:

and then (referenced from the above)

Just some linux guy on a messianic trip. Move along... - BobWoodshed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm gonna bank on it being the release of PCLOS 1.0.
- JoePrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This annoucement is smart, go ahead and call it stupid. I will guarantee that you'll all be here in 72 hours. I know i will.
This is a very good idea, anyone who says different...well.. lets leave it at that. - verucasalt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"could have...
If it takes off, ...
may very well....
could be that great...
Stand by "
UH, yeah. Whatever!!!!!!!!!!!! - rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just wait and see. Of course they want to get everyone they know about the announcement, so they make a pre-announcement. It sounds interesting. Just wait and see.
- h4lofourt33n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hopefully it's cool.... there needs to be a linux competitor against apple and microsoft, maybe this is it?
- rhthekida, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hyperation
"Linux will mass a horde of penguins and charge at Microsoft's headquarter... I CALL FOR ZERG! OMGWTFBBQ!!!"
Everyone knows that to counter Penguins you need Firebats, its the arctic scourges archenemy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Man... I bet this gets lots of buzz before Friday. Hopefully we will hear more sooner than that. - Singee15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2whos blog is this anyway???
joe-nobody? - paulmetzger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and 72 hours from now when this linux-changing event happens, this story will be buried pages deep and all new submissions will have 6 comments that just say "dupe!", get reported, and disappear.
- 0x2a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My bet is on another newbie distro.
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is pretty stupid, sounds like a crazy dude trying to get people to buy into a cult.
- WMcMath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This sounds like hype for a new distro
- nj10ii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I predict that they will announce free LSD for un-employeed open source developers to make Linux multi-media enabled out of the box.
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe it's the merging of two existing Linux distros.
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Hopefully it's cool.... there needs to be a linux competitor against apple and microsoft, maybe this is it?"
Nope. Ubuntu fills that spot already. - anonymoz, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1I forgot to celebrate the two-year anniversary of this important pre-announcement!
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That article doesn't say anything of significance. "Something will happen! I can't say what, and it will change everything, but I'm telling you now, you heard it here first!"
Instead of announcing that a project will start in 72 hours, how about announcing that a project will have been finished by then? This is pure vaporware until something shows. - Lurk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just what linux needs, Another Distro!
- Imagist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would anybody digg this? If there will be news in 72 hours, tell us then. As is, all this says is "there will be news in 72 hours," to which I respond, "No duh!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In about 72 hours, this guy's dreams of a desktop Linux will be dashed.
- bloodyValentine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its a new version of Tux
- deathguppie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just spent two whole minutes of my life.. looking at this thread..
Just for the hell of it I left a comment with my thoughts over there. Do you have any idea all of the times that something like this has happened?
Let's see, there was the Red Hat stock boom, Caldera getting Unix rights, Lindows (now Linair or whatever). There was the Novel move to linux, IBM said they were ready to take over the world with Linux. Linux was ready for the server, ready for the desktop. OSDL started, we got Plug and Play, then USB support true SMP. Oh, ya, it was going to happen next year. The year after.
Linux has been ready for the desktop for as long as I've been using it. Since 97'.
I said it before and I'll say it again. It won't happen over night, if it ever does. This is simple attrition. - tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3
- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1somebody has figured out a way to run ALL windows drivers for hardware with linux. no more unacclerated graphics!!!!!!!!!111
+ wine is now integrated into KDE perfectly.
+ Shockwave support (and support for every other proprietary plugin out there....this is where the 'wine' comes into play)
ACPI is no longer evil scary black magic, but works, the first time, every time.
Portage gets adopted to support binary packages, and everything in the tree is compiled for the i386 arch. Bye bye dependeancy hell.
I just fell asleep at the keyboad....time for sleepy. - Imagist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1""PS.. for every bitch I've heard from a windows user about what's wrong with Linux, I've heard ten bitches about how thier windows box didn't do this, or broke that way....

Exactly. Until Linux becomes focused on pleasing users, no matter how much better it is for developers, it's not going to be better for users.
"Maybe it's the merging of two existing Linux distros."
That could be worthy of this sort of hype. - tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is the point of trying to build up hype for something that's (allegedly) going to be great anyway?
If it really is that good, then the community will pick it up, a la Google, del.icio.us, Star Wars Kid, etc.
If it isn't really that good (which I suspect, in this case) then it will dwindle away and the promoter will look silly.
I also don't understand why it's 'necessary' for him to make a pre-announcement. Is somebody threatening him? At the very least, start the hype once the project is underway like www.milliondollarhomepage.com.
And one more thing: As much as I love Linux (Mepis in particular) and have been stunned by its rate of progress, it is not in the position that some advertising dollars are all that's needed to take it mainstream. In a mainstream owned by Microsoft, Linux unfortunately needs to copy Windows to win over the likes of Mr. and Mrs. Jones. For example, I was trying to get an elderly neighbour to use Thunderbird the other day and although she liked it, some of the menus and options were slightly different to Outlook so she's sticking with what she's familiar with (to my frustration). Fear of the unknown is the problem with mainstream users. People will only switch when it doesn't feel as though they're switching. Only then will they see the benefits of their switch, not before, just as we only realise how good Firefox and Opera are after getting to know them.
In summary, Mr. Helios should save his money (and his voice) and distro makers should stop their divisive tendencies and unify.
While I'm on my soapbox, what I really want to see is a Diggstro that automatically installs every app, desktop, video, etc. that is mentioned on the front page of Digg, regardless of OS, and then pours me a beer in sync with Diggnation. That would be worth hyping...
P.S. Sorry about the blank comment above (again) - don't know why it keeps doing that. - kanu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://lobby4linux.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=217&forum=6&post_id=1158#forumpost1158
hrmm
simple web search shows this
im assuming website and marketing campaign? - moorinho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1something like the getfirefox.com campaign? banners, buttons, ads in NYT?
- 0x2a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quote from the lobby4linux forums, posted by helios:
"There is a project approaching that dwarfs anything anyone has ever done in Linux...at least in the promotion department. We are going to need some help. The Mods already know about it, but I cannot divulge anything just yet...another couple of days to get the details ironed out then we will announce. Trust me...this is extremely important.
We are going to need a fairly large quantity of screen shots. These graphics are going to be an important part of a welcome page for new Linux users. We want it to be as complete and professional as possible. These shots need to be done in groups, according to their catagories. Each shotgroup will need an accompanying text file describing what each one depicts."
And then asks for submissions of screenshots in several areas - desktop, multimedia, graphics, etc. Check it out here - http://lobby4linux.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=217&forum=6&post_id=1158#forumpost1158
So it seems like a big (according to the hype) promo for linux effort, and from this I think the distro theories are probably incorrect...Somehow, a "pre-announcement" to create hype for an effort to create more hype just doesn't excite me that much...Oh well. Go linux - Demian.Max, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who dugg this? It's just spam, and judging from reading this guys other posts this amazing new product will be some kind of linux help website or something. I doubt it's even a new distro.
Even if it is some kind of amazing new breakthrough, this post says nothing....this is retarded - TheGrizah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe the three large Linux distro's that he mentioned are merging?
- cosulliv755, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a 30 second radio advert for Linux.

@#$#ing
Kidding me.
sigh.. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1*****. Linux is not going to 'suddenly' change the world. It hasn't done ***** for a desktop/usable by everyone sense. It never will. It's made by people without a clue about usability.
- malimu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Basically, think WINE for Linux (under Windows)
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Reminds me about how I was excited about this big invention from the guy that invented a wheelchair that could go up stairs. It was promised to change the world, and I waited like a year. It was the segway and I couldn't have been more disappointed. We will see on this. If it is anything short of Linux running exe files easily I will be disappointed."
We already can do that... - dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 It's now Friday....
