- TGMD, on 06/27/2008, -6/+43Because we all know that open source is the most anti-communist act one can take..
...wait a moment! - Vampyronight, on 06/27/2008, -0/+36I live in the central (slightly north) part of China and, well, I'll just say that Sourceforge isn't working for me. Whether it's due to government censors or not, I don't know. To be honest, the censors have been kind of wonky for the past few months- sometimes a site is blocked, then mysteriously returns, only to be blocked again (or vice versa).
- Philluminati, on 06/27/2008, -3/+31coz they have been blocked.
- trogdoor, on 06/28/2008, -0/+21China is Communist only in the oppressive way ( their economy is very capitalist ) and open source is only Communist in the equality way, open source is in no way counter to Free democratic society or even capitalism.
- huangweiqiu, on 06/27/2008, -3/+24updated information. people in northern of China really can't visit.don't know why
- Carv, on 06/28/2008, -6/+27Dear Chinese government,
***** you.
Sincerely,
~Carv. - Glugory, on 06/27/2008, -2/+22People don't need to spread false rumors about China. Your government does a good enough job being complete ***** heads that we don't need to make ***** up.
- inactive, on 06/28/2008, -0/+15No. If you read the article its about the Notepad++ sub-site boycotting the olympics. Which makes so sense anyway.
- mrloco, on 06/27/2008, -3/+18lol were they spreading anti communist rumours in source code or something?
- twiztidsinz, on 06/28/2008, -0/+12Oh yes.. because clearly SourceForge has a long history of suppressing the freedom of information.
do I really need a sarcasm tag? - JohnAdams999, on 06/28/2008, -7/+17Why are we having the Olympics in China again? And why are no countries boycotting them?
- bloosteak, on 06/28/2008, -4/+14Why should they be boycotted? Isn't America the worst offender of pretty much anything nowadays?
- munwaal, on 06/28/2008, -0/+10Sorry buddy. I'm in Shenzhen and have no access to the site. I get "The connection to the server was reset" message, which is typical of a site blocked by the "great firewall".
- trogdoor, on 06/28/2008, -1/+10Because according to that traceroute the problem starts with a Chinese service provider's ip and not sourceforge.
- Sephr, on 06/28/2008, -0/+9If they REALLY have to block the protest, they should only block notepad-plus.sourceforge.net and not all of SF.net
- MiDri, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8I know right?
They're as bad as nazis over there!
Wait... - l0k0, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8Do they realize that this brings 10x more attention to the issue than if they just left it alone? How many of you knew NP++ was doing this before? And do they really think their own citizens don't know about this yet?
- kinship, on 06/28/2008, -1/+8Funny, sourceforge is probably the most communist thing on the net.. i mean, it practically is free, and good, software for everyone. Kinda like how communism was supposed to be eh?
- Thater, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6your browser should have a proxy option built in, under connection settings somewhere... and proxies are usually listed with their country of origin.

Also, huangweiqiu sounds like a thoroughly indoctrinated propaganda mouthpiece. - corporatebee, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6Tis blocked just checked.. we'll add that to the ever growing list of sites that the net nanny doesn't like: wordpress, funny-games.biz, parts of BBC, etc etc etc
- kaelyiesta, on 06/27/2008, -1/+7Perhaps its the beginning of the chinese internet cultural revolution. Soon the forum trolls will be granted ownership of all wiki articles, spammers will get to 'criticize' anyone who sells things on ebay and craigslist and all the highly valued domain names will be given to people who use myspace. The new Mao will be the owner of ebaumsworld and Zhou will rise from the ranks of the 4chan hordes.
- kurtwinter, on 06/28/2008, -3/+9Sourceforge has always been blocked!
Sourceforge has never been blocked!
Eastasia has always been our ally!
We've always been at war with Eastasia!
FTFY - Daggity, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6Get out while you can!
- twiztidsinz, on 06/28/2008, -0/+5SourceForge has no reason to block China.
If SF blocked China, it'd be hurting the people that live there, not the government, and SF is all about freedom of information for the people.
From what I read in the same article as you, the only person saying anything about China is the author of NotePad++ who is boycotting Beijing 2008 and based on his stance I would have to assume the author is not blocking the people either for the reason I stated above.
This very much seems like it's the governments doing. - asspants, on 06/28/2008, -1/+6When I was in the Navy, the ships at sea have internets (very SLOW internets)
They decided that sourceforge was not an acceptable place for me to visit and banned it too.
This was about 2002-2003 - inactive, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4Good luck guys
- twiztidsinz, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4Yes... holding the Olympics in Nazi Germany was a bad idea... but did they really have to go and make another stupid choice?
I'm all for giving people another chance, but how about they show us change before we take them at their word. This should not have been a surprise to anyone. - bscene, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4read again... it was a commenter that said his trackback was broken because of a plugin not the author
- cokobware, on 06/28/2008, -1/+5FAIL
- TunaFishGangsta, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Yeah, but who blocked them is the question. This digg indicates that it's sourceforge, but more likely it's the great firewall of China.
- TunaFishGangsta, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3That is Chinese in South Africa that are now "black", not Chinese in Northern province of China. If that's what you're referring to.
- seshomarusamma, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3icry0000 this has nothing to do with routers.
the site is blocked deliberately
here in shanghai I cannot access sourceforge.net
but i can access most projects there like:
http://ettercap.sourceforge.net/
http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/
http://tidy.sourceforge.net/
etc.. etc.. - stuffradio, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2I'm surprised you can get on digg.
- inactive, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Actually, this is a really good point, why IS Digg unblocked?
- inactive, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2It's obviously the government's doing, don't trick yourself into thinking otherwise. All governments suck somehow.
- twiztidsinz, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2@Thater: Thanks for the link, bookmarked :-)
- ogmak, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2When i lived in Shanghai for two years, i went to www.hidemyass.com to go to places like Wikipedia and blogspot (yes....those sites were blocked where i lived, and it sucked). Though I dont know if it still works... that was a year ago.
- huangweiqiu, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Hello,
SourceForge.net staff have recently completed a migration of the SourceForge.net site to our new Chicago datacenter. This migration was completed on 2008-06-18.
As part of this migration, we had updated our DNS to point at the new Chicago datacenter. Unfortunately, you are among the minority (< 0.1锟of our users whose DNS servers have not yet picked up this change, despite the very short TTL (technical speak for us telling your DNS server to pick up the change).
Effective 2008-06-20, we have shut down the old California-based site servers, which have been serving your traffic in read-only mode for the last few days. Please accept our apologies that we are unable to provide you service until your DNS servers pick up the changes. We encourage you to contact your service provider for further assistance at this time (they provide your DNS service).
Thank you,
SourceForge.net staff
staff@sourceforge.net - rz8472, on 06/28/2008, -1/+3Wait why isn't Digg blocked by the Great Firewall? I see articles critical of the PRC at least every week here.
- angrykeyboarder, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Uhhh Can't they incarcerate torture and maim for the next 30 years just for sharing this information with us?
- angrykeyboarder, on 06/28/2008, -1/+2What a coincidence. I just downloaded that app yesterday. I saw their boycott mesage and now read this story on Digg.
Weird timing on my part. - dimonay, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Of all places, China blocks Sourceforge?
- hmunkey, on 06/28/2008, -3/+4Say what you want, but we are not the worst offenders of human rights and citizen oppression.
People always rag on our government, and I can see why, but China makes us look amazingly nice. - bj1989, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1*supposed* to be
- seqizz, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1extra info, youtube access is forbidden in Turkey :
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Notepad++ FTW.
- anthonyae, on 06/28/2008, -1/+2Im chinese .I will
- inactive, on 06/28/2008, -1/+2Yeah, but come on, that's a lame excuse.
- JorgeGT, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Could anyone in mainland China who has blocked access provide us with a trace route log to these blocked sites and accesible ones? Could be interesting to see if we reach the great firewall.
