- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31I honestly can't stand amarok. I strongly dislike the KDE interface.
I personally use SVN Exaile.
Anyway, I think that we can both agree that what I said was just my opinion and we will have to agree to disagree. - crazykyle9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Is it just me or does it look like the songbirds are farting?
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21songbird needs an EQ!!!
- pixelat3d, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Songbird is a great player and all, but it follows the trends of most modern music players that really bothers me -- bloat. AmaroK (god help me here come the digg downs) is one of the worst music players i've ever used because there is just so much crazy bloat in it (try exiale). Why does every music player try to be so much it's not? If you're going to compete with _media_ players then dub your programs as such, and stop jerking everyone around with your useless 'features'.
- loof, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21@giga
I hate how people always say "you can help out! " when someone wants an open source program to have x or y in it. Sure it's true but not everyone is a programmer and has time to dedicate to that sort of thing. I've got nothing against you It just bugs me and felt the need to release the anger a little. - ErikStaats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The Songbird UI designer, Koshi, does the artwork. The rest of us code and enjoy his artwork. One of the developers is an actor and was an extra in "Pursuit of Happyness." Another has four kids and coaches soccer and T-ball. We all have lives doing stuff other than coding Songbird. Koshi happens to spend his spare time doing cool artwork for all to see.
- CheezIt9109, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Foobar2000?
- bennypowers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Wow! I'm so impressed.
I thought it was just another iTunes clone at first, and wasn't motivated to try it,
Then I watched the screencast. Holy manga!
http://www.songbirdnest.com/screencast
I'm very impressed, and intend to use Songbird as my regular player - AhmadMF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Am I the only one annoyed! by the way! they write! the changelog! ?
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18"A healthy dallop of bugfixes." Like, making it actually do something? I installed it and NONE of the functions worked, at all.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Here is a list of bugfixes for this version:

I hope this version is somewhat more stable than the last as songbird is the perfect itunes equiv for linux. - dburanen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I just want to remind everyone that this is a 0.2.5 release. FAR FROM 1.0. Progress has been somewhat slower than I expected when this project was announced oh so long ago, but 0.2 was a usable release, 0.2.5 is a better release. There are still problems of resource usage. There are still a lot of missing features.
If nothing else, this is a player to watch. It's cross-platform, cross-musicstore, cross-portableplayer. It aims to be a swiss army knife that anyone can use.
While it does have some unique web playlist features, I'm still going to use , but I'll keep a watchful eye on songbird and I'll hope it progresses well. - kuribo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Well, it supports extensions, so you can write it yourself, post it to their website, and then it will support USB mass storage devices on Linux.
- sneakywombat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10agreed, foobar is awesome. light and simple, plays everything*.
- bias, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11WTF do you mean WinAmp is Bloat!? I thought you Linux users are smarter than this, every damn thing can be turn off in WinAmp whenever you like, you can use it with just plain music player (this is not personal preferences, it's pure fact). Isn't Linux all about "Choices" too? or you just want to pick on it because it's Windows only?
- democracysucks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9In the spirit of this being a music player, they're not farting...
They're tooting. - towca, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Why not use amarok? I know songbird is a promising app, but it's far from being the "perfect iTunes replacement"
- Kamael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I read somewhere that the farts are there until the app reaches a mature state...like version 1.0 or something...
- ErikStaats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Final" refers to the final release of 0.2.5. There were three 0.2.5 release candidates. Thus, 0.2.5RC1, 0.2.5RC2, 0.2.5RC3, and 0.2.5 Final.
- dburanen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10To Bardak:
>Am[sic] I the only one who thinks the developers take to much time on the art on the website
It looks totally sweet though. :)
There is also fault in the logic that if they made less artwork, they'd code more. - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Uh...its really not.
Exaile's goals are to have many of the features of amarok...but the interfaces are 100% different, and so are the backends. - DocSquidly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Alright, we can look forward to plenty of comments about all the missing features in this "Developer Preview". Its 0.2.5, not recommended for use by regular users people want it to be complete and viable replacement for iTunes, Windows Media Play, etc.
Seriously folks; for a product that's not even version 1.0, SongBird is a great product and I personally will refrain from bitching about missing features until version 1 has been released. - BrettFromTibet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Thank God OS X users are going to FINALLY have a viable alternative to ITunes!
ITunes is so bloated, annoying and DRM-laden... it is high time for a cross-platform music player with more choices and freedom, not less. - sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've got a wacky idea. Why not mature the application itself first before worrying about extensions and themes
- vagarach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It is only version 0.2.5, however :D. On windows at least, iTunes gets a little slow scrolling for me, so nothing is perfect, eh?
(foobar2000 works flawlessly though) - nsjoker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Songbird is great, but what's even greater about it is the suspense it's building up by having that little egg icon. You know it's gonna hatch sooner or later, and I can't wait to see what the bird looks like :D
- SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Every music player doesn't try to be full featured, if you want a player with less "bloat" in Linux there's a huge selection. Off the top of my head there's mpg123, xmms, mplayer, Audacious, BMP, etc. Now with that said, I don't believe all the full featured media players are full of bloat (and my first media player experiences were back with the commercial version of winamp on Windows). While I don't care for iTunes and Songbid (although I admit, I haven't tried it recently), I find Amarok excellent. Just because you don't like the features, it doesn't make them useless.
- scorwitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why do all the little birdies have gas?
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@Bleach00
Um, ok, so if a person doesn't want to use commercial software but can't help code the alternative, they should just shut the ***** up. Yeah, nice attitude, that'll convince people to donate cash to Free Software developers...
Also, you admitted that it needs one, so either help code it or kindly stop being a hypocrite. - jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@vagarach: I have to agree with you there. Sure, Songbird may be bloated. But to be fair iTunes is just as bloated. So when you have the choice between two bloated apps, bloat is no longer a factor in the decision.
So what is a factor? Cross-platform support perhaps. Songbird as a leg up slightly in that regard. Device support? iTunes is THE app to use with the iPod. If (according to a previous poster) Songbird doesn't have USB support on Linux, I'd say that's a big negative.
@bias: You're right too though. Screencasts aren't a good indication of how well an app REALLY works. It's a controlled environment, so it doesn't reflect real-world use. I'm downloading Songbird (Mac OSX) now to give it a real test. - cmost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@Cl1mh4224rd
Well, Compiz is only at 0.2.2 and its fork, Beryl, is only approaching 0.2.0. These have (arguably) revolutionized the Linux desktop. A version number doesn't necessarily bely stability or feature set. - jockser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4lol I've been thinking that for a long time
are they really coding there ?
but really the art is cool and part of the appeal - ray023, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8To all you people complaining about lack of features and the rest of you screaming back "why don't you code it yourself", chill.
It's version 0.2.5 for Pete's sake!
How does an infant program make it to the front page of Digg anyway? - adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I came here just to say that.
- ziadoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Your spot on. So many media players are trying to be too much these days. I feel the same about Winamp too. Its a great player, but it does feel and look rather old school. I wish they'd bring it into this century.
- Loie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6i hate the new version of iTunes, and the old version keeps screwing up my library registry settings for some reason, so i'm trying out new players.
Songbird is bloated and slow. it's trying to do too much at once, implementing a lot of features I don't think many people will use. Play my music, organize it, hook up with my iPod, and do it in the smallest memory and cpu footprint possible. that's all I want.
Winamp just feels old and I don't like its messy implementation of the Library and Playlist at the same time.
Honestly...on windows...(and i'll be flayed for this)...Media Player 11 is pretty good. :( - emaf37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Mediamonkey is coming out with version 3.0 soon. However, it is still in alpha stages but it's worth keeping your eye on it.
- ErikStaats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Though, feel free to suggest features that haven't been suggested already (e.g., EQ and CD support). Maybe some enterprising developer will see your request and make an extension. That's what prompted me to develop the iTunes importer, iPod support, and library organizer.
- cw1925, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Too bad Songbird can't have more extension and theme writers.
- Hootyea, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Why not just use MusikCube? It's a lot more lightweight. I'm a IceWeasel/FireFox fan too, but you have to admit it's heavy on the ram. MusikCube never tops 30 megs of ram on my box, and is just as nice (excluding a web browser).
- ErikStaats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Songbird does have iPod support on all platforms. Check it out on the Plug-ins page.
- ziadoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I quite like Helix Banshee, its a nice simple music player imo.
- flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Agreed Loof.
I wish I could program I would help out, but I am in the majority who can't program.
Besides, why start a project you can't get right yourselves? I mean why start it and hope people "help out" because it's open source? Who then profits? Tell me when it works. - adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like songbird. I hate the fact that when minimized it uses an average of 60MB and when maximized it uses about 90MB.
- sifelltneytandi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3MusikCube is nice in some ways, but its last.fm support is awful. As in, it doesn't work half the time. And since last.fm's official program isn't supporting it yet, I switched to foobar.
- directive0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3agreed scorwitz, whats up with that?
- GoodDamon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@loof
The idea is to support the community developing this DRM-free, non-encumbered software that's available for all to use. You could donate some much-needed funds to a favorite project, answer questions in a technical forum, or use a spare computer to run a beta version of something. Programming isn't the only way to donate to the community. - Konstantino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Songbird is great! I remember hearing about this a while ago and saying it was going to be stupid. Today I finally tried it at its 0.25 state and its a wonderful experience. It does a good job of finding audio content, too. I'm not a huge fan of the black interface though (or any of the feathers for that matter). They don't exactly mesh with OS X.
- Skyhoper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Congrats Rob!
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2An EQ will come after they choose a single media core for all three major OSes. They're looking at using Gstreamer.
