- ha1f, on 10/10/2007, -35/+265Hey, yeah, I saw this on Reddit yesterday. It wasnt funny there either. Buried as lame.
- Dankoozy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+202There`s a text editor out there called sex. and an image viewer called 'pornview'
- matrixbandit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+120Heh yeah.. I always thought it was pretty ballsy for them to just come right out and name it 'pornview', I mean let's face it, how often does anyone actually use the slideshow feature of their image viewer when they AREN'T looking at porn? Not very damn often. I love the package description for it in Ubuntu...
"Pornview is an image and movie viewer/manager with thumbnail previews. Additional features includes thumbnail caching, directory tree views, adjustable zoom, and fullscreen view. Slideshows allows for unattended presentation of images for hands-free viewing. Pornview is written using GTK+." - shadow289, on 10/10/2007, -4/+77indeed, hes not.
- FizixMan, on 10/10/2007, -11/+76Another reason why Linux will take off.
-fixed - kalsey, on 10/10/2007, -6/+70Monkeys don't run. They swing on their knuckles.
Burried as inaccurate. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -14/+63Sorry, is that supposed to be funny??
Anyway, at least the submitter linked directly to the image rather than to some stupid blogspam (or worse yet, wordpress) page!! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+48hands free lmao
- ynggrsshppr, on 10/10/2007, -8/+51Meh.
- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -1/+44"Monkey" is a webserver. When you shut down your computer, it's going to have to stop any services that are running, including any webservers. This guy had monkey installed, but stopped it manually, but the shutdown process was told to try to kill monkey.
So, the program Monkey can't be killed, or in other words, "Monkey is not running."
This doesn't mean whatever distro he's using isn't a serious OS, it means that he didn't have his webserver running when he shut down. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+37on debian `apt-get moo` gets you an ascii art of a cow
I would say that Debian is a pretty serious distro... - rdavis, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39My favorite bit of humor is from Cinerella, a video editing program that runs on Linux.
The icon for the tool "Sharpen" is a thumbnail headshot of Albert Einstein
The icon for the tool "Unsharpen" is a thumbnail headshot of George W. Bush. - NoSuchAgency, on 10/10/2007, -4/+37* Ring Ring *
"Hello?"
"Is your monkey running?"
"No."
"Then you'd better go catch... oh. Sorry to have bothered you."
Seriously, I think this touches on an important point about Linux and Free Software in general. If FS advocates expect it to be adopted by the wider public, it not only has to be easy to use, it has to be MARKETED. This doesn't mean getting a Rolling Stones song for the Superbowl commercial spot. It just means make the "product" sound appealing to the potential user. The classic example is GIMP. Great software, terrible name. Good luck getting a lot of people to consider using it. Geeky in-jokes and obscure abbreviations are similarly useless at attracting users. - thisguy47, on 10/10/2007, -1/+33man sex

EDIT: dang, it doesn't look much like a cow on Digg. - TheOther1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Digg runs on Debian
- bysin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Just google for "sex", you'll find it.
- comptergeek, on 10/10/2007, -7/+24I find it funny when I'm booting up Ubuntu and I see something about HAL Daemon starting up... it makes me feel like my computer is about to kill me.
"Open the pod bay doors, HAL" - Ploosheeta, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20I second your meh.
- Fordi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18For those who don't know, the Linux HAL is the Hardware Abstraction Layer (read: driver shim) that allows software to operate on a wide variety of hardware without having to special-case the whole world.
- kewlito, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17umh, you should have written $ sudo apt-get install sex
- manualrainbow, on 10/10/2007, -12/+27hahaha monkey! maybe they should make a program called cheese, or moon pie! hahahaha.
Sike. - cyranthus, on 10/10/2007, -19/+32wow, bunch of nerds without a sense of humor. i dugg it.
- Fordi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Most distros let you choose your software; specifically, this guy's probably using Monkey HTTPd as a dev server.
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14So linux will never take off because of a specific application that Linus or any of the main distributions probably do not endorse/know about?
I guess windows must be really ***** because of [insert_stupid_app_name].exe (or perhaps drwatson.exe will suffice). The same for Mac. - dcbrown07, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14I fsck my hard drive regularly because I'm a technophiliac

lol - amdinator, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11This aptitude does not have Super Cow Powers.
- PunchSideiron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11What operating system can take screenshots while it's shutting down?
- Amablue, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12That's like saying that a blank canvas is ugly no matter how you paint it.
If I really wanted I could get my desktop to be damn-near identical to Vista, complete with Aero effects (In fact, one day while ignoring a lecture I messed with my setting until I had it about 90% identical). If I so choose, I can get a snazzy looking dock as well and get rid of the extra panels and make it look like OSX.
How good it looks is up to you. The real power though is in the flexibility, not the eye candy. - Heilige, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11It's Psych not Sike, as in Psychological mind games from the 80s
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Still a bit of a noob I am.
- BackEnThaWomb, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13buried as lame
- subterfuge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10This Just In: Dell to remove Linux from all its computers due to an essential but comical message in the shutdown process.

The executable file is called *****!!! - rcardona2k, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9more | tail
- mercurysquad, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8apparently yes
- schotty, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I get what you are saying, but really. How many users actually see the info that is presented in dmesg (bootup and messages) and on shutdown? Linspire and Ubuntu are probably the only 2 distros purely perfect for the convert that isnt tech savvy. Do you really think that they are going to be running a webserver? Do you really think that they are going to go out of their way to see bootup/shutdown messages?
I dont think that matters. Plus there are some really queer (not as in homosexual, but as in odd) names in the windows front too for commercial software. I think for guys that know jack about marketing, but rather are gods of coding, they have done a great job thus far. Disagree, okay. Lets take a look at some of the big names:
OpenOffice
Apache
Gnome
Rhythmbox
Firefox
Evolution
Songbird
gtkpod
miro
amarok
audacity
blender
wine
Need I continue? One idiot name doesn't make them all stupid. Plus, many non geeks have chuckled at the name and were more interested in it just out of curiosity. - XzinWoW, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Not as funny as the man mount command.
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The pic said the monkey is NOT running, hence it's accurate. Burying your comment as inaccurate. ;-) (ok, no, I didn't)
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Yeah I agree. When it comes to computer and tech stuff having an obscure or odd name doesn't help you at all. Hell what has Google or Yahoo been up to lately? /sarcasm
- brianez21, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8"Monkey" (monkeyd) is a small web server and that distro he is running is Damn Small Linux, which comes preloaded with it. You can tell by the KNOPPIX-style colorization of the kill lines. You can get it from here: http://monkeyd.sf.net .
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6$ whatis 'the meaning of life'
the meaning of life: nothing appropriate. - regeya, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Yes. They should take a cue from Microsoft, the most successful software (and quickly becoming that in the hardware world) company in existence.
Word is the only thing that's really halfway what it should be.
Microsoft:
Spreadsheet: Excel
Presentation: PowerPoint
Technical drawings: Visio
Video game console: XBox 360
MP3 player: Zune
...
Great examples, no?
Or maybe we should follow Apple's example on error messages, where the system STILL shaves off a few bytes by not having a list of error numbers, instead relying on the user to look up what a -110 (why negative numbers, Apple???!?) error is.
Yep, with end users so used to sensible conventions, the OSS world should focus on generic names like Web Browser, and only one program ever, no room for outside innovation. That'll be a wonderful thing, yeah. *rolls eyes* - gd1z, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Anything linux makes it to the first page. Yup.
- cdmarcus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7*Cinelerra :)
- QGYH2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Considering that this is an original photo taken by me, and on my blog, how does it become blogspam?
