- blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -8/+71Google and Apple are Free and Open Source Software companies? News to me!
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -18/+50It's funny. But if you were to put it in realistic scaling, Linux should occupy about 3-4 pixels of that image :)
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35On the desktop market.
But on the server market it would occupy substantially more than just a few pixels.
And the *BSD should probably be put as a separated entity, not fighting alongside with Linux/GPL. - rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26I was gonna say the exact same thing. I know we all wanna love apple right now, but that doesn't mean there Open Source.
- loup, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Yeah, because we're all coders and should feel an obligation to at least look at the source code if we're going to use it, right?
or wait, maybe people are just supporting free software and like the fact that if someone actually knows what they're doing and has a useful contribution to make, they're actually able to, which helps to strengthen the community. - gnushoes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25I always think ms are the blue guys and gnu/linux the red guys.
Probably should have shown novell fighting for the linux front,
then digging a tunnel for microsoft to invade behind friendly lines. - diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I think you're the only one one this entire page who actually took the diagram seriously. Your nerd status exceeds all expectations. Gold star for you.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20I do have a job. A good one. And I work with Open Source Software.
Did I just blow you mind? - Defragged, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16@blapierre
They're not. That's why they're red, whilst all of the FOS companies are blue. - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Apple isn't, which is why it's in black text. Darwin is open which is why it's in blue.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Needs more infighting.
A _lot_ more infighting amongst the people also fighting Microsoft. For instance... noone is attacking Apple, which based on the Apple forum on digg does not seem realistic...
Also, more cowbell. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Any graphic depicting Sun and Oracle as larger organizations than Google are obscenely inaccurate. Google if going by stock value is nearly ten times more valuable than Sun and fifty times more valuable than Oracle.
- capiCrimm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13***** closed source, how many times have you had an error you couldn't deal with or a feature they didn't give you. No one looks at every projects code. The point is you can play with the code you want to for the projects you want to. I'd say if you eliminate the open source users who can't code in the first place, probably 99 out of 100 have looked at the code for a projects, and probably 9 out of 10 have actually submitted a patch or modified a program in some way.
- charlesroldan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I guess that means you're better than me. Sadness.
- ryogahibiki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I like how the playforsure is backfiring on MS.
- sublimer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11its not so much looking and modding the code yourself. its the fact that there are thousands of others that do. therefore you have a large team of people making it better, for free.
whereas non-open source products have a smaller group of people who can't possibly compete with the open source programs, quality wise.
one day, probably 2012'ish. Open source programs will really push microsoft in particular. mozilla is kicking butt, and linux is working its way in there too. not to mention all the other great freeware out there like mysql, php, apache, google.
i think its only a matter of time. the dedication of the open source user base is greater than any other! - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I am Gates of Borg.
Lower your shields and prepare to surrender your vessels to us.
You will surrender your technological and biological distinctiveness to our own.
Your culture will adapt to service us.
Resistance is futile. - loup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Darwin is FOSS
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13It was very funny the first time, but so many sites have nicked this images and it has been submitted to Digg at least twice in the past (times I can recall).
- hardran3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10The fact that you are given permission to look at and modify the source is what is important. If you lack the ability to look at or modify the source you could pay someone to. With closed software that is not an option. Free as in speech is the important part of free software, not the fact it is usually free to use.
- MuTeD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+94th time.
- ViceVirtue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Also, The image has now been graced by the presence of a Gentoo icon
- GNugget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7earlier maps
http://mshiltonj.com/software_wars/ - mvent2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13I'm pretty sure Linus Torvalds and Eric Raymond don't live in their parent's house. Many people have gotten rich off open-source. The only people who are as ignorant as you are people paid to troll by Microsoft.
- sublimer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13no one is bashing bill gates. i think most people would agree he is a great person especially for pretty much having more money than many nations do.
we're making fun of the empire he built though. thats why i cant download windows, cause i feel like im taking money out of the hands of little kids in africa. - Xivx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6right, also why is eclipse being "challenged" by ASP, shouldn't the Microsoft counter part be Visual Studio?
- Alexio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I agree, Novell should be more offensive, but I'm also disappointed that there is no mention of WINE at all. Surely this would break through some of Microsoft's defenses?
- srg13, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10He might donate a lot of money to charity, but most people here still hate him and Microsoft for illegally using its monopoly in the desktop OS market to crush competition in other markets (ie. web browsers), and all the FUD they spread about OSS.
- fugrank, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9since when has apple been FOSS?
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oracle would be the most obvious example of the scale being totally wrong. Market capitalisation: Oracle: $91B; Microsoft: $307B. The Microsoft area seems quite a bit larger than 3x. :-)
- bart9h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe less then 1 in 100.
An that's sufficient. For a relatively small project, with 10 thousand users, that would mean 100 programmers looking at the source. Not bad. - pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5try not to confuse freeware with open source... google search will reveal such hidden secrets.
- legioss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5no xbox?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wait why is Windows XP clashing with Firefox?
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7...........as ImTheDarkcyde posts that comment from Firefox.........
- consonance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Your post sounds very, very silly. Your metaphors are horrible (seriously, they make the baby Jesus cry), and I'm not sure you understand how business works.
In the business world, diversity is important. When you're choosing a stock portfolio, you don't put all your eggs into one basket. When you're a large corporation, you're at economies of scale if you want to enter a new market - the initial costs are high, but you have so many resources that as time goes on, your revenue rises above your costs. Diversity means that your company will have a steady stream of income, even if any of your products faces a downturn in supply or demand.
Apple has diversified: Desktops, laptops, iPods (with different models, to boot), Apple TV, iTunes, and now the iPhone. Is Apple run by a group of fools? The obvious answer is no. While Apple has a much smaller market share than Microsoft, there is no doubt that they are turning a profit and satisfying investors. Just look at all of Apple's competitors: Creative, iRiver, TiVo, Yahoo!, Microsoft, Sandisk, HP, Dell, Sony, IBM, etc. Clearly, you would think from all those competitors (in different market, it should be noted) that Apple is on the verge of collapse!
Microsoft has extremely profitable operating system and productivity suite divisions, which make enough revenue to make up for the losses endured by the games division, although that organization is showing signs of escaping the red ink. It has taken six years for Microsoft to continually lose money on the Xbox and Xbox 360, although the amount Microsoft is losing has been decreasing. By 2012, I fully expect Microsoft to either be breaking even or taking a profit, having read their income and cost figures.
Microsoft is not an empire on the verge of collapse. It's foolish to think that. Here's how things stand: Microsoft has 90 to 95% of the desktop market share, depending on who you ask. Apple has 5%, and Linux is hardly worth mentioning. I wouldn't even give Linux 2%. When your PLATFORM for all your other services is thriving, I wouldn't say that you're doing too badly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Doesn't get much nerdier than that
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Never get involved in a land war in Asia
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But who downloads the CVS and compiles them? Ive done it a number of times for XBMC. Doesn't mean I have to read/understand the code, but I still use it.
- TheZorch, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Only a fool would fight a war two fronts.
Only the king of the land of fools would fight a war on mutiple fronts.
It looks to me like Microsoft is trying to take on too many fronts at once. No one company is invicible. If history has taught of anything its that no matter how big the empire it will eventually fall under enough pressure.
Ie: The Mayan Empire, the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Egyptian Empire, the Soviet Union, the Empire of China, ENRON, Worldcom, Hudsons, etc. etc. etc. - nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!
The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against Microsoft when a monopoly is on the line! - bradchoate, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3WebKit is FOSS. And Bonjour. And launchd. And... well, just look here:
http://www.macosforge.org/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sun-Tze, Front, Caesar and Clauswitz and especially Gen. Tacticus all agree on these basic rules of strategy:
- 'you cannot win a multi front battle'.
- 'when you are encircled, you`re problems only begin.'
- 'there is no such thing as an heroic last stand'
- 'large maps and symbols look impressive, but up close it always looks nasty.'
And for the attackers:
- if the enemy has a fortified city or a stronghold, make sure you keep him there.
:) - 2ndDairy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If he's so into open source, he should have put it under a creative commons license.
:-0 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3eclipse is developed by ibm not sun
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You sound exactly like a apple fanboy... why do you lie?! The linus movement is the biggest competition for one simple reason, $$$. Sorry but not all of us have a couple thousand dollars to spend on a new computer every 1.5 years. This is why linux is a more dominant competition, because the features that will be offered and upgrades will all be free and will work with exisiting hardware.
- sid0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Have a look at the differences between the last map (http://mshiltonj.com/software_wars/archive/20060129 ) and this one (http://mshiltonj.com/software_wars/current/ ).
1. Security problems have reduced.
2. Novell has separated from the rest of the Linux crowd (and is moving closer towards Microsoft).
3. Oracle has been introduced.
4. IE, which had previously turned back, is now marching boldly again as IE7.
etc. - mikewhite314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why is MS Office against KOffice and not OpenOffice?
- mikewhite314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3it's only running away because Apple's evil FairPlay can't be beat
- robuk24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some one should make this into a flash game. Good work to who ever made it, very clever.
