- templest, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24WTF?! A Slackware release that comes standard with a... new kernel?
THE SKY IS FALLING! ...I think I just saw a pig fly by.
(I'm an avid Slackware user, so I have the right to say this. :) - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22You've got to admire Patrick's work. Still going strong after all this time. So many distributions were derived or inspired by his pet project.
- sworoc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Congrats guys... although I don't use Slackware, it's pretty tough to be a Linux user and not admire the contributions that a long time distro has made.
- tomarocco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Slackware is the Rolling Stones of distros.
- mattmcm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Announcement: http://www.slackware.com/announce/12.0.php
- Tsen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Dugg for being Linux news about a distro other than Ubuntu. Not that Ubuntu's bad, I just wish we'd hear more about Slackware, Debian, Gentoo or a few of the other solid distros out there...
- flashingcurser, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10A horse designed by committee is a camel. Slackware has, from its inception, been a thoroughbred.
- flashingcurser, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Longest running 32bit operating system for PC. (BSD and VMS were for different platforms in 93)
- Veurruckte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I guess Patrick Volkerding finally considers the 2.6 kernel stable enough to be the default kernel. O_O
What's this world coming to? - BenStockwell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"You need to be in the plugdev group for hot-plugging and auto cd mount and all that."
I'm running 12.0 myself, and KDE automatically asked me what I wanted to do when I inserted a DVD. No configuration necessary. - ilobmirt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7sudo fsck you
- Jual, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7No, 386BSD was first released in 1992.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/386BSD - Gogogo111, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Congrats, you guys deserve it.
- actionscripted, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6We run Slackware on our dev boxes at work -- thank you, all.
- phukt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9wow... I just updated to 11.0 yesterday... nice timing
- ahvi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Slackware always scared the hell out of me. Now it seems... slightly less scary 0_o
- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Slackware is really easy to use, but in a different way than Ubuntu. It's simple, no-frills, pure Unix. You don`t need to touch your mouse to do any configuration, and you don't need to learn any distro-specific configuration tool. Its main philosophy is KISS (keep it simple, stupid): no extra loops to do anything. However, someone coming from a distro such as Ubuntu might find it confusing, since this philosophy is exactly opposite to Ubuntu's. Try it, and keep it for some time (to get used to it): you won't regret it.
- Torpov, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Congrats to you guys; I've been using Slackware for a long time, and I love it more than any other distro.
- enorganik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Glad to see this. Just in time too as my laptop should be getting back in the next day or two. It looks like they stepped up this time and I'm hoping it is as nice as it sounds.
- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's not on the main homepage, but the changelog can be seen at ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-current/ChangeLog.txt
The announcement is at ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-12.0/ANNOUNCE.12_0 - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Amazingly bad site but good news. How does the FOSS community respond to free offers to redesign sites? I've seen quite a few projects (Distros, etc) with horrible sites and I could design/code a much better one pretty quickly and for free and that'd be my way of helping. :o
- deadlikeoscar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Dude, you're a badass! I wish I could be as cool as you.
- shuffle2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4totally agree.....also, wtf is up with a major release so soon after the last one?! very un-slack
- dataless, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5fair play slackware for still going after all this time :)
- Excessive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Thanks Pat, you are the man. I owe you much for all those good memories.
- Xenogis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I coulda sworn he said he would never put hal in either. Either way this kicks ass! I can't wait to upgrade.
- dragonlor20, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Ugh... Slackware... Arch... Gentoo... so...difficult... after... running... ubuntu... and... then... mint linux...
The first distribution that gets my aging Hauppage WinTV-USB2 (not the PVR) to work stabily out of the box with TVTime or any other TV app will get my vote.
Oh yeah, my brother just installed Vista tonight on the computer he built, and it was pretty funny to think of the Mac-PC commercials while he was installing. There is certainly some truth to them. We both looked at one another and said that linux had finally surpassed windows in useability. Either stick with XP or go Ubuntu or Mint, but hell, there is no way my mom could ever figure out how to use Vista. Unfortunately, my Mom is their target customer.
Anyways, back on topic, Slackware that is easier to use may be worth another try... - Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Highly recommended if you're interest in Linux is more from a sysadmin perspective, because it shows you what' s really important in terms of setting things up and knowing your way around the system. It doesn't leave you in the situation where you say "But, how do I set that up? I can't find the icon!"
To draw a strange parallel with web design, Slackware is the HTML and javascript that'll run on any browser and doesn't take risky shortcuts or provide lots of frilly visual effects, but it's solid, dependable, and the skills you get are reusable. - texnofobix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Like it makes sense to buy another computer which is overpriced and then sell your old computer for too little. Why not put Slackware on it and be happy?
- Ssullivan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Nice to see another solid release from the worlds best distro!
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Congrats!!!!!!!!
- baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Oops, sorry about the dupe...
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Which is gay since E17 upgrades (usually breaking all backwards compatibility) every week. A pity really, E17 could really be something but there seems to be no momentum to get it finished.
- MikeDawg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Hopefully Pat's final changelog get updated/uploaded soon.
- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well, at least there was no version boost this time...
But I agree that this version deserves a major release number (way more than 11.0 did). The new GCC alone would warrant that, not to mention the 2.6 kernel as default. - addis0n, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Slackware gives me the fuzzies!
- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When I submitted it, the announcement was only in a .txt file on FTP. The only HTTP page I could find that was already updated was the torrents page, so that's the one I submitted. Sorry if you had to click two more times to read the announcement, but I'm sure the torrents page was pretty useful to some people.
- treehead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This should have been the Digg article URL. Why do people insist on Digging generic pages ?
/ rant off - GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The mad thing is the 2.6.21 kernel (well the same problem exists in 2.6.20) is the first 2.6 kernel I've had serious issues with thanks to all the retardedness over device names.
- WorldRTomi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0no update for a long time though :
quoted from the website "SlackE17 is released generally every 2 months. Last time was December, the 25th 2006. " - nuxrl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Congrats to Slack community and many thanks to Pat.
For those who're tired of KDE on Slackware, you can try e17. It's light, slick, easy install and use.
http://slacke17.sourceforge.net/ - Wakizaki, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Slackware rulez!!! :D
- hark659, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I just download Slackware 11.0 in a week ago and this just release, that's awesome.
- Wakizaki, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Yet Another Windows Fanboy...
- Acglaphotis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0What?! for slackware? dude you have serious mental issues
- redxii, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2You need to be in the plugdev group for hot-plugging and auto cd mount and all that.
- Wakizaki, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Sure, Buy a Mac... and install Slackintosh!!!
- Trat, on 10/11/2007, -6/+0Buy a Mac.
