- wfmk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Glad to see Pat doing well with Slackware. He was seriously ill last year, and it's marvellous to see that he's made a full recovery and is back to Slack!
- radi0head, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Patrick Volkerding is a genius! ( or should I say a SubGenius? ) :D I guess it's time to support Pat's awesome work on this release and buy the DVD from the Slackware store: http://store.slackware.com/cgi-bin/store Please support this great project if you can.
A Slacker for life. - Visible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Slackware takes time for newbies. It's different then opensuse, mandriva, ubuntu, fedora, mepis or pclinuxos. It helps when you have help. Makes friends with other Slackware users or at least here are some links to help you get started.

Check out a few Slackware IRC channels and mailing lists. - zerocomm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12it was my first distro too. when people ask me to try linux, I always give them slackware. in my opinion, its the best way to learn. Someone could spend a year on ubuntu and learn less than you would learn with 3 days of slackware.
- redxii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'm also waiting for DLG 2.16. I just don't like KDE. Kthis and Kthat, ...

Oh, kome on. Kan't you see the Krystal Klear power of KDE? - jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Badass! Slackware is my fav distro :D
- redxii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I'd love to show you a shot of the login screen but I'm just afraid it's too damn sexy and people will be wetting their pants.

- LightsOut06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Slackware was my FIRST linux distro back in like 2000. All these first time linux users using Ubuntu have it easy let me tell you. It'll be interesting to see what kind of strides Slackware has made since then. Downloading now. :D
- samueldockery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Uses 2.4.33.3 kernel. Now thats what I call commitment.

For those after a package manager/installer, Swaret is great

D - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Gentoo has better 64-bit support than Ubuntu, fyi.
- heffer2k02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I just "swaret --upgrade"
Whats the point in all this reburning nonsense? - prophase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah... ISO goodness and VMware baby
- fax8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Slackware is definetly a really good linux distribution.
It does not offer a windows user friendly system (like Ubuntu, Mandriva or Suse)
but it's definetly the best distro to learn everything on Linux.
Without having configuration wizards or similar you will need to configure your
sistem directly modifying the config files. But you will need to understand how the
program to be configured works before. This is where you will start learning. - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Slackware is a pretty nice Linux distribution. It's easy to understand how the system works in a manner of a few hours and fix things yourself. When something breaks in a complex distro like Ubunutu (and it will) you're basically reduced to searching Google in hopes of finding a clue.
- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+769.95 is too steep for me. Maybe if it was like 19.99 or somthing then I would consider it.
- reclusivemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Seeing as you asked so politely;

- lunar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Everything sounds great and I'll definitely check it out.
But why Apache 1.3 instead of Apache 2?
Or is Apache 2 something I can install after installing the ISO's? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3screenshots

http://www.bitbenderforums.com/vb22/showthread.php?postid=311808 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yep...Fluxbox rox
For a fun stunt, run Fluxbox (or even a more bare-ass WM, like TWM) pop open a console and start all three desktop panels (xfce, kde, gnome) by typing: xfce4-panel &, kicker &, and gnome-panel &.
Fool with them all to get them on different edges of the screen and close the terminal. Then find somebody else and ask "Quick! Which desktop am I running?"
Now if only I could figure out how to get the Window Maker dock and the Fluxbox taskbar going that way... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry, I wouldn't be me if I didn't post to cheer for Slackware (YAYYY!). To add to previous comments, if you're studying programming there is no finer distro than Slackware. It includes dang near every language and library and runs the rest that you download with ease. Some gripe about package management, but this is the one system where you can grab a source tarball and actually expect it to compile.
And here I am in the dead heat of a big project I have to finish with two weeks to wait before I can join the torrent fun... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank you Softlanding Linux System, if it wasn't for you and your many frustrating shortcomings Slackware and Debian would not exist.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I disagree with that. Gentoo gives you the most basic install to begin with but Portages powerful tools makes it far less basic than Slackware. I think Gentoo is the better tool in terms of customisability and power use these days but it is not more nuts and bolts than Slackware.
I still recommend time with Slack for those who want to take their usage futher but I don't point new users towards it. Usually I find Ubuntu users who get more excited about the system and want to learn more then point them towards Slack. Gentoo is where you should be once you can adequetly handle a power users distro. - redxii, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I rsync'd slackware-current so I didn't have much to download. Making an ISO now and gonna burn it.
- theworldisround, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've only seen one window manager/desktop environment that I do like and that's fluxbox. Everything esle is cluttered and ugly.
- union, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I am admin for a few web servers, and I must say I prefer 1.3.x apache series to apache 2 series. For one they work just fine, I am used to them I know how to debug problems etc. I really don't see much shortcomings in them.
I only use apache 2.x where apache 1.3.x doesnt work (ie. samba)
Another major issue is that apache 2.x had more security issues in shorter period in time. I am sure that as things mature 2.x will become as stable/secure as 1.3.x series but its not there jet.
Also i know from talking to other admins that i am not the only-one who thinks like that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4MEH!! You young whipper snappers and and all you fancy booting and updating ways! In my day we either ftp over the floppy install or nfs mount the whole dang directory! Ohh no one cares.

FYI that's really how we did it
*Props Pat* *WOOT* - i440, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Thank you podgey. (:
- zachriggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Slackware was my first distro, too. I have to say it was for the best.
There is NO better way than to dive in head-first. - DD32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dont know personally...
I've been using the ones from the LinuxPackages site with good results:
http://www.linuxpackages.net/search_view.php?by=name&name=apache2&ver=10.2
(Most, if not all 10.2 packages will work with v11)
D - mikejw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Slacktastic!
- OmegaNine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I started out with Slackware. I cant say i use it today, but its nice to see they are still around. We used to use at work till we moved to redhat.
- LinuxConvert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ooh aah...a new release Slackware - I used it (10.1 and 10.2) for a bit less than 2 years and found it to be incredibly stable and quick with Gnome as my desktop after having spent 2 years of newbie time using Redhat 7.1 (using early versions of KDE) before that (stopped cos I didn't like the whole Fedora split) and a short fling with Sun's Java Desktop System (heap of crap that never took off).
If only this release had come out a couple of months earlier I wouldn't be a Debian user now. I was always wondering when Slack 11 would come out if ever cos of Pat's health. Now I've made the switch i don't wanna go back though....Debian's .deb packaging makes life way too easy for a small sacrifice in speed and no discernable difference in stability. Firefox and OpenOffice crashes more now but I don't think that's the fault of the distribution. - zerocomm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0^I've used slam64 before. Its just a port, it doesnt have the same functionality as slackware. I used it for 2 months and a lot of crap was broken
- fax8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0out of the box screenshot are almost useless...
Slackware offers completly unmodifyed software.
This mean that you will not find cool graphics or themes on it...
Just the just compiled programs default.
But creating your own cool interface is really simple: http://www.kde-look.org/ - mimps, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Finally it arrives!
~Cheers~ - zerocomm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Slack was my favorite distro for a really long time, until 64 bit came out and I was forced to abandon it. I'm waiting for the day that Pat will release this for amd64. Until then, ill be using Ubuntu.
- packeteer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3cheers Pat, nice release
- monkeywizard, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Best way to learn would be Gentoo since you're setting up everything in the system yourself.
Slackware is still too automated in that respect.
It was good 6 years ago, don't get me wrong, but since then I think Gentoo has completely replace them as the most "basic" install you can get. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Ask him for a amd64 version?
- espo111, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1................and still using kernel 2.4
yeah ... "with some of the latest advances in Linux technology" -
