- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Haha...We wish...It took the 9 months to fix MAJOR crashing and audio bugs with 1.3, do you REALLY think they're going to release a new alpha version with video in 1-2 months? REALLY?
- TheRealToma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13"After this release has passed into beta stages, our next goal will be to implement video features, and this is not too far off."

Well, at least its 1 step closer to being worthwhile. - b166er01, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12how about a 64 bit version? pretty please? and no i won't install the 32bit glibc just for this...

- thedsadude, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10ּSkype uses a closed format. If you're happy about the "gold" version (or whatever), and intend to use it - take into account that Skype can drop GNU/Linux whenever it wants, and there's nothing to do about it.
Skype's closed format makes both ODF and OOXML look great in comparison.
I don't use Skype on principle. - has2k1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Over the last 9 months or so, the skype team has paid adequate attention to the linux community, hopefully they continue to do so. I am kind of worried since ebay seems to have verbally downgraded the affection to their skype arm.
- friend18, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7WTF STILL NO VIDEO. THIS IS BS
- kikvors, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Good work. Now 1.5alpha will come in 1-2 months with video.
- kingp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I've been using Skype on linux since 2005. Is it just me or does it seem like Linux only gets a new version once every year? 1.2=2005, 1.3=2006, 1.4=2007
- euvirtual, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7panacea usually refers to a cure to all illness, or a solution to all problems. Besides being the Greek Goddess of cure, as stated above.
- badassninja, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Good to know. I kind of thought they gave up on linux... as in.. we'll update it... some day... maybe.
- mahler, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Actually, since it is the best in quality I do recommend it.... first priority is creating a larger Linux user base. This is only possible by getting the popular apps. There will come a time when they are obsolete... and open source-applications will take over.
- billy1380, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I am sure if they add video it will have to be version 2.0 (MAJOR functionality) alpha/beta
- Avian00, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7OMG! Still no freakin' video?!?
- sparrowkc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Who do you get that from?
- thedsadude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6ּSorry, but I have no idea what you're talking about.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Meh, you're too late. I'll stick with my SIP solution. Now I have free landline calls to most countries I care to call.
- hackeron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Who is your sip provider?
- uzytkownik, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Versions of skype:
- Windows: 3.5.0.239
- Mac OS X: 2.6.0.151
- GNU/Linux: 1.4.0.118 - Werrismys, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Still closed, proprietary crap using nonstandard protocols.
- mahdaeng, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Read a dictionary.
- oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4what sort of cure-all doesn't cure the lack of video?
- dukeinlondon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Don't know too much of the development cycle but this "under the hood, Skype 1.4 for Linux has the same great audio quality and solid Skype technology that exists in Skype 2.6+ for Mac and Skype 3.2+ for Windows" suggests that some of the ground work to bring skype for linux level with the other implementations has been done. And I am sure Asus (for the eee) and Dell are pushing hard for a video skype client.
- sneakywombat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I know this won't happen, but it would be great to get the source code. It'd be a dream to have it put in as a package for openwrt. :) Instead of using a hodge podge asterisk to sip/skype gateway, i could compile it for throw it right one a device running openwrt - say the linksys rtp300. ohhh well.
- EvanVolm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Skype went down the crapper during the summer. I downloaded it just weeks before it all happened, and it was great those first few weeks. I refuse to use it now, because there are still bugs.
- MasteRR, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Does it still suck?
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If you ask me, the Windows version is the absolute worst version of them all. All that crap added on is just bloatware.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Let's see...All my friends/all the people i talk to use Skype. So because i'm running Linux, i should not talk to them again or not talk to them till they get something open-source? ***** THAT. I like the fact that most of the software on my system is OSS, but it doesn't bother me to have a few things that are proprietary and just free, not FOSS.
- sloppychris, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Ekiga is installed by default.
- berkus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What "few more things" do you mean? Video, SMS we've already heard. Something that is really missing and not in the works already?
- j4n0, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I'm curious whether is still reads your /etc/passwd and ~/.mozilla directory contents.
- moschops, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Agreed, I ditched it for the same reason even though I still have a bunch of credit with them. I was happy to find Sipphone and Gizmoproject client - just one of many Linux clients for VoIP. Plus I've been able to use several off the shelf non-locked ATA boxes.without being locked into Skype only hardware.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Well it's better than 1.3 but still needs some work. It will be another year or two until we get a decent Skype for Linux.
- sanford42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3aww, did someone forget to read the article? or do you just read the title and come in here with the first bit of asshattery that you can spew forth?
- sanford42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3No, that's Ventrilo
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Or, a less "Skype hates Linux/Mac timeline":
- Skype 1 for Windows is released. "We should really make a Mac version..."
- Skype 2 for Windows, 1 for Mac released. "Linux users really want this, too. Let's make one there." - Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Happy to oblige:
http://www.voipbuster.com/
http://www.voipdiscount.com/
These give you a short amount of time to quite a few countries for free. I guess if you want to jibber-jabber then you'll pay for it. However, the prices are very cheap (cheaper than skype I'm told but I wouldn't know). There are lots more but i need to go eat now :D
EDIT: Shop around.. there's loads of providers. Competition = good prices. - jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes. 1.4 is awesome and i truly love it, but 1.3 was a big load of ***** and it took them almost 9 months to fix it. For example, i have a decent system...Whenever someone called me and i was on Skype 1.3, the whole computer froze from between 1 minute-5 minutes.
- berkus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Umm, interesting idea.
- Chandon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2But why? I assume you're already running both Gnome apps and KDE apps - if you run both 64 bit and 32 bit Gnome and KDE then you're only using 4 times as much RAM as you need...
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I imagine you have a bad connection. Skype will degrade the sound quality so that it doesn't consume all of your bandwidth. On the other hand, it might be your mic. Lemme guess, you went out and bought a $10 mic?
- EnterDaMatrix, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Skype's format can't really be compared to document formats, It's more akin to Speex. Skype is still better than Speex and any VOIP client using Speex and SIP.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Really now? Me and my co-host record our podcast over Skype and it sounds a lot better than most podcasts with all the hosts in the same room.
- nomasteryoda, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Personally I have used Skype, but I have been reconsidering all things Close Source as evil. Why? How do you know what is going to happen with skype? Is it stealing your shadow passwords? To whom is it reporting?... Get Ekiga. It works, is fully Open Souorce and comes with lots of Distros.
- No sonic screwdriver handy?? TIP: Carry a real OS on key and unlock any door! - berkus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ass hats have OSS support in separate package. Only shows that you never even bothered to look.
- muffinmanpoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Slightly less.
- KWhat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Why one earth are these comments being dug down? It has been shown that skype is sniffing the /etc/passwd file via AppArmor! I see no explanation from Skype about this nor have i herd that is has been fixed. It is unclear what Skype is doing with the /etc/passwd file, it may just been checking accounts however there are other methods for doing what ever it needs todo in a less suspect manner.
- muffinmanpoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"...only using 4 times as much RAM as you need..."
Probably still better than Vista, eh? - muffinmanpoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Should be called "panace", as in a cure-all-but-that.
