- bnolsen, on 01/10/2008, -0/+23Why? I have a single DVD Burner sitting in an external USB enclosure. It hasn't been turned on in at least 6 months.
Optical stuff under linux isn't very useful except for installs, and optical is being slowing superceded by solid state.
The missing PCI-express is more annoying than the optical drive. - spiffyfitz, on 01/10/2008, -2/+22This year just might be the year my grandma gets a new computer! Hooray for grannies hooked on Linux!
- pak314, on 01/10/2008, -0/+20I would be interested if they can make it a low noise system. The power supply and CPU fans should be very quiet. That would make a nice server I can keep under the desk.
- OnipSemaj, on 01/10/2008, -3/+20You sir are a *****. Mac is based on Darwin, a Linux-like system that borrows from FreeBSD. So when you buy a Mac, you are buying a glorified Linux system that can only use proprietary hardware. You suck balls.
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -1/+17Sure thing, buddy. I'll get right on that.
Now where the hell is the $199 Mac... - bundwallah, on 01/10/2008, -1/+14No way my friggin computer is gonna have a flower of smiley face stamped on it!!! :) Skull & crossbones would be OK. :)
- pldgnoauthority, on 01/10/2008, -3/+15this would be perfect for a simple media pc
- Darkhacker, on 01/10/2008, -13/+23The lack of an optical drive really kills the deal as well as (what appears to be) an inability to at least add one since the case doesn't have an empty slot for it. I'm curious as to what distribution of Linux they will use and whether it will be a standard desktop (KDE/GNOME) or if they'll have some kind of watered down or simplified interface like the EeePC.
- bumcheekcity, on 01/10/2008, -0/+10The cheapest Mac I could find in a brief sweep on the apple.com website was a $599 Mac Mini, which has the specs of a machine that you could build for $250 with a free OS. (1.83Ghz C2D, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, no monitor). So, you know, alternatively to your overpriced piece of *****, we could get a brilliant PC, with the Free OS with the MASSES of programs avaliable for $250-300. Less than half the price. PC > Mac
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -3/+13Bend over and I'll show you.
- pcpimpster, on 01/10/2008, -0/+9This is kinda eh... You can use newegg to build this.
Now the EeePC @ this price and you sold me. - shredswithpiks, on 01/10/2008, -0/+9depends on what you're doing, I guess. I have a burner that gets used at least once a day (on my main compy which is a linux box). I have a friend with dual burners that gets used multiple times a day.
however, a $199 computer isn't going to be something I use to burn CDs... it would probably end up being a kitchen email checker or something. - cdawzrd, on 01/10/2008, -1/+10Where would you put in the DVDs or CDs?
- vibrokatana, on 01/10/2008, -1/+9Who actually uses CDs or DVDs. Plus with linux you can mount drives across the network very easily, you can use the dvdrom in another machine.
- brownsnake12, on 01/10/2008, -2/+10no *****......
- OniDracula, on 01/10/2008, -0/+7@OnipSemaj....
Neither does Windows. You need a third party codec for DVD playback, even in Vista. Luckily most DVD-ROM manufacturers provide them as part of PowerDVD or w/e they bundle. Alternatively, you could download VLC. - akilleen, on 01/10/2008, -0/+7Good job making fun of people living on fixed income. Because, after all, it is their fault.
Myself? I will stick to my cheap PCs. :) - bumcheekcity, on 01/10/2008, -1/+7No, apple deals in the low-end, high-margin stuff. The word "overpriced" is just a conveinient way of expressing that last sentance.
- ha1f, on 01/10/2008, -0/+5My thoughts exactly. That, or it could also make for nice public terminals in schools, etc.
- ha1f, on 01/10/2008, -3/+8No, you idiot he attacked Shuttle because he doesn't like their machines. Date is 2006. God you're an idiot.
- OnipSemaj, on 01/10/2008, -0/+5In fact, you can build a Linux system for under $199 (I priced one out on Newegg for $190), but I am not sure you could get it in that nifty case.
- frednofr, on 01/10/2008, -2/+7It's like the powermac cube.
- Theli, on 01/10/2008, -1/+6Yes.
- kidcodea, on 01/11/2008, -0/+5ouch, that made too much sense.
he wont understand. - Theli, on 01/10/2008, -0/+5The large blue text at the top of this page is what is known as a hyperlink, it will transport you to a whole other part of the internet... maybe even a whole other part of the world.
But don't be afraid, if you want to go back all you must do is click the back button (that arrow pointing left) and you will be automatically transported back to this page. - DrGamez, on 01/11/2008, -0/+5Both cores meet at high noon.
- cvelusc, on 01/10/2008, -1/+5Very little need for an optical drive considering the purchasing demographic of this device.
- canthraxp, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Don't buy shuttle stuff because the guy who started the project has a friend who is married to a girl which has a dog that once belonged to a engineer involved in Novell. Yup, tainted with microsoft closed source spirit.
C'mon schestowitz, don't be so black and white about this. Besides, I notice that C|net loves to bash some microsoft products too. - Urusai, on 01/10/2008, -3/+7Nothing is like the Cube. Nothing!
- Jerk, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Ed Bott has a point, Shuttle customer service *does* suck. I have 3 Shuttles. When a power supply went out on one (out of warranty - but I was willing to pay), I contacted them to get a replacement for the proprietary power supply. It took several attempts to actually get a real person, and calls that did get answered, required someone else to call me back (which they never did.) So I still have a Shuttle sitting here next to me that is dead.
- Darkhacker, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4-I want a skull
-How about a nice Kermit the frog?
-No, I said I want a skull
-Okay, well, I'm going to go ahead and do Kermit the frog. - Smwbigboss, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Seriously, this is enough to browse the web, check email, write documents. Computers like this were considered top of the line in 2004.
- baalzebub, on 01/10/2008, -2/+6http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCa ...
- bossm4n, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4It's a slot on a motherboard. I'm not asking for a video card to be included, but I had hopes of creating a nice little Myth box with one but your outputs will be limited. Doesn't mean I don't like it or wouldn't use them for tons of other apps, but those seem like pretty big omissions.
- totorototoro, on 01/10/2008, -4/+8You have to remember, guys like Ed Bott, George Ou, and the like all depend on Windows/Microsoft for their day jobs (Windows/IT consultants). Its been their business for years to recommend Windows to all their clients. Its their business to dismiss any other options, since they themselves don't have expertise in anything except Windows. Don't expect them to write themselves out of their own jobs :P Just read their articles in that light, and you will be much less irritated :p
- Tenoq, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4It can do 99% of the tasks your average user asks of a computer. Well it could if it had an optical drive. :p
- orangefly, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4check a box in add/remove, hit apply, and serve....
- moduc, on 01/10/2008, -1/+5Apple should come out with a stylistic $198 one. I am sure it'll fly out of the gate faster than they can produce.
- Tenoq, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4You could, but you couldn't get it in a low-power, quiet, SFF case. How about comparing apples with apples? It's like the people having a go at the eeePC, saying you could buy an Acer for a couple of bucks more with 2-3 times the power. Yeah you can, but the ***** doesn't exactly fit in your pocket like the eee now, does it? :p
- harlowsmonkeys, on 01/10/2008, -1/+5I wish I could give you three buries for this, instead of one. First for the irrelevent Ed Bott stuff (and the childish misspelling of his name).
Second for purposefully breaking the link you give to his blog, so that if we want to see if you are right, we can't just click. We have to edit the thing to remove the stupid space.
Third for the idiotic admonishment that we should not read CNet because Paul Allen is involved. - inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3Not bad, it has the specs of a low-end laptop from several years back, and I'm sure your average consumer wouldn't know the difference between this and more expensive PC.
- bahamutxd, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3Would the onboard video handle being a MythTV frontend?
- bumcheekcity, on 01/10/2008, -2/+5Meh. I had hopes for this one. I think they're using it to show how wonderfully cheap a Linux machine can be (because, ofc, of the lack of Opearting system price). But in all honestly, I could only see this being used as a Media Centre PC or perhaps a small home server. It's not really powerful enough to be anything else.
You might as well spend $100 more, keep the Linux operating system, and get some real hardware. - BbIT, on 01/10/2008, -1/+4a ***** USB DVD drive? duh!
the reason they didnt include an optical drive is because there are so many USB powered optical drives.
this WOULD make a great media PC, with a buttload of USB devices. - wilf_brim, on 01/10/2008, -1/+4Apple does not, explicitly, deal in the low end. They leave the low end, low margin stuff to others.
- Darkhacker, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4Darwin does borrow from FreeBSD, but FreeBSD isn't based off of nor has Linux source code. It was based off of 386BSD which was around before Linux. FreeBSD has no connection to Linux other than the fact that they are both UNIX-like operating systems and in the case of Mac OS X, it's been certified as an official UNIX.
- Tenoq, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3945GC chipset - probably makes it GMA950 - so yes, I imagine it would. A friend of mine runs 1080p on a 945G board under Windows, so I can't imagine it would be any different with MythTV.
- Prez, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3I see this as a great cheap thin client! RDP or VNC access.
Boot from the network or use the RDP or VNC client in the linux OS. - Tenoq, on 01/10/2008, -1/+3No - the people who use their PC for 'basic tasks' like office work and Internet would certainly appreciate an optical drive. Backup, installation, music & DVD playback... these are all things average people do on their PC. I'll admit that I hardly ever use the optical on my desktop - but I know the rest of my family uses them constantly to whack a CD in and listen to music while they work. :p
- Derrekito, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2USB FTW. Seriously I think my DVD drive was unplugged from the power supply for almost 2 months. I never use the damned things unless im REINSTALLING windows (which is about every two damned months). Otherwise I just mount iso files or use USB thumb drives.
