- syowr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3try this arzdb:
rm -rf /path/to/dir/you/want/deleted - kosibar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"To go back to the last directory you visited, simply type cd -"
Sounds great, but what would be really useful is "cd +" which would go to the next directory that you are going to visit. - project2501, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@MrLobster

There are more than just Linux and XP you know. - rgsteele, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey arzdb, be very careful with the rm -rf command... if, for example, you accidentally press enter after typing "rm -rf /" you will be royally screwed.
- illynova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm still convinced wget is the coolest thing since sliced bread. Take a look at its man page sometimes... the things it (and curl) can do are incredible.
- WMcMath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I couldn't get the site to load so here is the google cache for anyone else having problems http://66.249.93.104/search?q=cache:CUCSgpDHudIJ:www.linux-mag.com/tips/+tips+site:linux-mag.com&hl=en

- pczou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my tip: use vi to view man pages
# cat /usr/bin/vman
#!/bin/bash
export MANPAGER="col -b | vim -c 'set filetype=man' -"
man $*
use like this:
# vman ls - bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are welcome guys, pleasure to help, happy holidays.
- arzdb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know how to delete a directory with sub-dirs and sub-files in one command? It's probably quite easy and I just missed the flag in man.
Good resource. - luke--, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the cron @reboot thing is awesome! I've been putting off trying to figure out how to get stuff to load on boot on my mythtv box for ahwhile, hopefully this will simplify it! cool1
- arzdb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perfect, thanks syowr. I knew recursive functions would surprise me one day.

also shred - leed25d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i use something like this to do a bigAss (tm) grep:
find baseDir ( -name "[Aa]rchive" -prune ) -o ( -name "*.p[lm]" -o -name "*cgi" -o -name "*cfg" -o -name "*.php" ) | xargs grep -n -e
adjust as necesary - 3Den, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A few surprisingly good things in there.
A few inaccurate things.
"cd -." is non standard.. doesn't work on any of the boxes I have. Is this for some other shell?
killall - you don't necessarily need the full path.. you can use whatever it says in the process list. killall httpd works fine. Also, you can use it to send signlas, just like kill, ie: killall -HUP httpd.
Copy a directory:
In Linux, cp-a will work just as well. - macluvjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1some useful *nix tools here
- ratsg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2These aren't linux tips, they aren't even specifically unix tips.

Why do people make these list about linux, when clearly, they are applicable to just about any unix, or unix clone?? - raviteja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good tips.
One tip I had hard time searching is to keep jobs running even after closing the shell starting the process just like startx, kdm, amarok .... do.
nohup > logfile &
nohup stands for NO Hang UP. - nugget, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1site loaded fine for me. Pretty nice too
