- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Erm, a web-based proxy, and something like Squid are totally different things.. Running though a local proxy gives absolutely no anonymity (It's just rerouting any requests it gets back though your connection)
The web-based proxies, or ones hosted on remote computers don't give anonymity, they just make it seem like the connections are coming from a IP that isn't yours (So it can be hard to trace back to you)..
As stated, the reason proxies lie Squid are generally use caching, so you don't have to constantly download the same websites/images, rather store them temporarily, and send them over the local-network (smaller bandwidth useage)
- Ben - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7ummm chances are if you are using a transparent proxy you arent doing it for anonymity but for caching
- AdamJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@thegiorgio
No you dont.
As long as the squid box can see the internet or another cache peer, the client does not need to have a default gateway.
When you want to have the same box route non-proxied protocols, then you must make it the default gateway. - lonepie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have had this setup on my home network for some time now and I love it :)
- djisamsoe, on 01/21/2009, -0/+1nice proxy...thanks for sharing mate...
try this site...http://hidethisnow.info/ - Snarf2000, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Interesting stuff. Tough to stay up to date with everything. I always find this blog helpful:
http://ghostblaze.com/blog/ - thegiorgio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@AdamJones, yes but then the squid proxy must be setup on each client (in the web browser) and it's not transparent anymore.
- playboy4life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0trickmy.net is great, but also see link-proxy.com very fast, i download stuff off it.
- Spates, on 07/01/2008, -0/+0If you are looking for a fresh high speed web-proxy to access blocked sites at work and school or you just want to surf the web anonymously you should try http://www.browsejunk.com this web-proxy is brand new and great for streaming vidoes!!!
- zarzamora, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sometime ago, i wrote another how-to, but this time for a COMPLETELY transparent proxy. That is, a bridged proxy.
That's a bit more esoteric stuff, but very useful if you really can%u2019t mess with your network topology. Also useful for networks where you do not have total access, it uses a kind of a Man In The Middle Attack technique for a total transparent proxying.
Have a look at: http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/1433/ - aximbigfan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2eh, i used a proxy a while back when i didnt have an ap, but it proved to be a pain in the butt. i had to reconfigure it everytime the servers ip changed. i hope to never use a proxy again.
- yunfeiquan, on 02/22/2008, -0/+0Best Proxy
8 language,43 servers,one key proxy plugin
http://www.web-php-proxy.com - thegiorgio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yep but you still have to use the squid server as default gateway...
- Jack9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Biggest benefit to learning about setting up proxies? Getting around licensing. ColdFusion has a single IP trial license for IIS. Use a proxy to have it map to multiple domain/URLs. /cheers
- paradoxic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Who knows if a proxy is secure or safe. Even if the proxy itself isn't logging all it's own traffic, the network above it or the machine it is on can be insecure. The only way I trust anything is if I've set it up myself (or at the very least, I know the person running the proxy server), proxies on the web can be used for password or even identity harvesting schemes. Be careful out there!
There are a dime a dozen phproxy & cgi proxies out there.
The real site to goto for browser based proxies isn't some self sponsored plug, but goto:
www.proxy.org
They maintain a rapidly updated list of browser based proxies to use. (as I said I don't trust these personally, and would rather run my own using squid for more secure browsing). - televisible, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3An Amnesty campaign that allows users to republish and spread sites that are being repressed on their own sites. You can get a badge that will dynamically show different excerpts from censored sites around the world and link back to irrepressible.info where you can learn more about the site in question and the campaign itself.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1This Digg title is very misleading...
http://www.imghop.com/public/pview/132/mislead.GIF - shout, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Is 8 gigs of RAM and dual Xeons a good server for Squid? Cuz that sure seems pretty weak for a proxy.
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Well, you could just use a web proxy without any browser settings.

Or http://hidemyass.com/free_proxy_lists.php - kmg9000, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2I have had no problems with http://www.trickmy.net
No need to do all this work. Just use a free online proxy
What is Digg?
