- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44No, real geeks got their gmail account during beta testing. Everyone else is just a follower.
- rieuwa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35Oh dear.. Gmail and Ubuntu in the same title.. front page guaranteed...
"Every Geek uses Gmail … it’s pretty much required" ... oh please don't generalize.. some people don't actually love Gmail passionately! *shock* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37*****
- bloodqc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30real geeks use their own email server.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Pine? You're a n00b. Real geeks telnet to port 110 and 25..
- jasz, on 10/20/2007, -0/+21cool... now I have gmail set up as default ... now all I need is a friend so I can have someone to email...
anyone?
*crickets* - Murdats, on 10/20/2007, -1/+21I got it during beta, can I have a friend now?
- marnaq, on 10/20/2007, -2/+18I don't think you understand the concepts of labels and archive.
- carrett, on 10/20/2007, -0/+15why? labels are like folders but better, since a message can live with more than one label, but it can only be in one folder (unless you make copies).
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -2/+16Sorry you wasted your time commenting, then? What do you want us to say?
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -5/+18Please use the proper term: Linux
...or the window manager this is applied to.
Quit calling everything "Ubuntu" - evilgold, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I second that!
While there are pleanty of tutorials that are ubuntu or debian specific, It seems like a majority of people are just jumping on the ubuntu bandwaggon. This article for example can apply to anything running gnome. You could even easily do the same thing in KDE.
Ubuntu is linux, but linux is not ubuntu. People need to learn the differance before it gets others confused. - inactive, on 10/20/2007, -5/+16:-( I ***** up. Bury.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Instead of adding /home/geek and asking every time to change geek to the username, you can simply shorten it to: ~/open_mailto.sh %s
- carrett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Actually this is how to do it in GNOME (uses gnome-default-applications-properties), and GNOME isn't GNU/Linux either. You couldn't do this in Kubuntu, for example, or in Slackware, which doesn't even distribute GNOME anymore.
So you see, since Ubuntu definitely has GNOME, it is in some ways better to say "in Ubuntu" than it is to say "in Linux." But we should all really be saying "using GNOME in Ubuntu GNU/Linux." That takes the snap out of a headline though... - keithacole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9it has tags..., and filters. why use folders?
- howtogeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I just fixed a typo in the article... in the command window you have to have a %s at the end, which I missed in the article. So the command should be:
/home/geek/open_mailto.sh %s
Replacing "geek" with your username. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Is there no other way? I have enough ***** running in the background at the moment.
- djspiewak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Maybe, using GMail Notifier? :-)
- omoshiroi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=398974
I prefer this script as it supports subject lines etc. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"No, real geeks got their gmail account during beta testing. Everyone else is just a follower."
I agree with this. If you were a real geek, you would have used it in beta testing. If you didn't use it then, just take the quick road to a geek E-mail by using Pine. - shibz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13so why is this labeled as ubuntu when it will work in any linux?
- Rinnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Had a brain fart and thought I'd pass this on to others -- just in case.
System > Preferences ... That's under Ubuntu not Firefox. For some reason, I thought the "system" menu may have been from an older version of Firefox and straight to the Preferences menu. Clearly, I need to start using Ubuntu more often to build my familiarity =) - sid0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6B...b...but... how will it make the front page if you don't mention Ubuntu?
With the brilliant title (Gmail + Ubuntu), the article was guaranteed to hit front page. - reha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7this is not only for mail client you can choose any of your preferred application using galternatives check this guide http://www.ubuntugeek.com/galternatives-graphical-setup-tool-for-alternatives-configuration-in-ubuntu.html
- linkinpark342, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why is shibz getting dug down? Despite what the article states, this should work for any linux running Gnome, not just Ubuntu.
- mattmcm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@8086ed:
I couldn't agree more. Good point.
OT, Gmail becomes useless when you're stranded in some random location without Internet access. It's hard to imagine today, but hey. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Also GNOME works on Solaris and BSD.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4damn straight, My father was complaining about the lack of folders
tag+archive=folder
and if you want, tag+tag+tag+archive = 1 copy being copied into 3 folders(while not using the space and waste of 3 copies)
or alternativly, just use search - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3meh, I've already got the same name at all the major free providers... why do I need another one?
- carrett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why is he being dugg down? This is a pretty cool script...
- howtogeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@mercurysquad:
Actually you can't, that never works in Gnome. You can try it if you don't believe me =) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yes, use the google tool bar with firefox and you can set it to "send with gmail" in the options. it will bring you to the web based gmail client when you click on an email link in a web page.
- rockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Time to switch to ubuntu dude !!!
- Pow3rbook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I used a combo of the scripts, and it works great. I just downloaded the script to the home folder and set the mailto link thing as described in the article.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Is there any way to do this with windows? It gets annoying everytime I use a system function "mail this" and it pulls up that huge Outlook Express initialization blimp of a window..
- bigspruce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Hmmm - doesn't it still say "Beta" under the GMail logo???
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i grabbed it from the firefox plugins page
- gfnw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use gmail accounts, but I access them with a client-side reader through POP. I'd rather not rely on a webpage for all my email needs.
- Corneliusm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Meez
youraddress@googlemail.com = youraddress@gmail.com. They didn't stop issuing gmail accounts and switched to googlemail, it's just that email sent to either domain goes into the same inbox.
Go ahead, try it out. - scronline, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I beg to differ. Not every geek uses gmail. I don't use it, nor will I ever use it. gmail doesn't stand for geek mail. It stands for google having access to your personal correspondence to know more about you than any other company because they store more of it than any other company. No thanks, I'll stick to my own servers, thank you. If you're a REAL geek you use your OWN servers rather than someone else's.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3what I should have said is open enrollment
- meez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@mikesbaker (#6615538)
Everyone with @googlemail rather than @gmail is blatantly not geek. I wish I would have made more @gmail accounts while I had the chance :(. - varlog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3lol, blimp of a window, priceless
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought only German and UK users had @googlemail.com addresses.
- djspiewak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@mercurysquad
~/open_mailto.sh doesn't work within the Preferred Applications dialog for the same reason that we can't just put the inline sed invocation right into the command: Preferred Applications isn't a shell, so none of the normal shell shortcuts can be used. - shakajumbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ubuntu is sweet! Plus everyday I find something on digg that makes it even better!! Fantastic job guys.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unless you got your beta account unofficially like me
(gmail account invite sharers) - ordminute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You've just hit the titanium but-why-would-you-ever-want-to-do-that Apple usability wall. Oops! Time to sit down and shuddup. Apple knows best.
What's wrong with Mail.app anyway? (cackle) - bmartin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's a script which handles subjects. All the junk after firefox should be on one line:
#!/bin/sh
firefox "https://mail.google.com/mail?view=cm&tf=0&to=`echo $1 | sed s/mailto:// | sed 's/?/&/' | sed 's/&subject=/&su=/'`"
Note: there has to be a backslash behind every ampersand in the sed commands. Digg is dumb and won't let me put it in. Sorry, trying to be helpful. -
