- sloppychris, on 05/30/2008, -7/+98***** the MPAA! Go open source!
- Vinvin, on 05/30/2008, -0/+72Wow. I have to say: it's awesome. Especially the music, wonderful...
- scrag10, on 05/30/2008, -0/+71Blender is going places.
- tarsius, on 05/30/2008, -4/+61This is really exciting BUT I don't think the title does it justice. "Second Blender open movie" doesn't really convey much to someone who isn't familiar with Blender or open movies. Perhaps something like "Incredible 3D Movie Created Entirely with Open Source Tools: Big Buck Bunny" would be better...
- vln004, on 05/30/2008, -0/+57the quality of this movie is much higher than I expected.

- mattgilberg, on 05/31/2008, -1/+18The retarded chipmunk was my favorite.
- directedition, on 05/31/2008, -0/+15Another victory for Blender. The story wasn't as interesting as Elephant's Dream, but the animation was spectacular, as was Jan Morgenstern's score and sound design. This is an excellent vehicle to exhibit the power Blender has.
- arcticblue, on 05/31/2008, -1/+15Movies like this always get me really excited about Blender. When Elephants Dream was released I was like "Holy ***** that awesome!" so I downloaded Blender to try my hand at it and the only thing I could make were some blobs wrapped around each other. This new movie is giving me that urge to go try again.
- Atomic1fire, on 05/31/2008, -0/+14The fact that this was a movie with no connection to the mpaa(so was elephants dream) aka You cant get sued for distributing it and you can lipsync to elephants dream if you wanted (you cant with this movie because I dont think there was any vocals)
- SquigglyP, on 05/31/2008, -0/+14I've been waiting for this ever since the project was first announced. There's a game project in the works called "apricot" - all the projects are named after fruit until they get a title - which is based on this film, and is also made with open source software. They're going to more closely integrate Blender with Crystal Space. Can't wait for that one, either.
- ctrlfreak13, on 05/31/2008, -1/+13Uh..... you do realize that search for "blender" comes up with stuff other than the 3d animation program right? Like, maybe, real blenders that are used to blend things?!?!?
- pumafi, on 05/31/2008, -2/+13Mirror Files here, source included: http://proyectos.pixelamigo.com/open/movies/BigBuc ...
- dinostabOMG, on 05/31/2008, -3/+14I am a 3d animator who is used to 3ds max and Maya. I tried Blender a few years ago and was blow away - by how absolutely, utterly unusable it was. There was no undo, for god'sh shake. I found out shortly afterward that this is because the community had protested its implementation - it was a tradition to have no undo in Blender. There were tons of other indications that this was a coding project, not a serious tool for artists. This was attested by the complete lack of any good work done in Blender. I scoured for it.
So I hadn't given Blender much thought since then - even despite having switched to Ubuntu as my main OS (for everything other than using certain animation software, of course). Then, a little while ago, I saw hints of this movie. Absolutely unbelievable how far it's come. If anyone doubts the value of free and open source software, here's the pudding. I am going to download Blender as soon as I get some free time, and perhaps even switch to it as my main tool. I am blown away for the second time. - ChristmasCpp, on 05/30/2008, -0/+10This can only be great news! I remember I liked Elephant's Dream, I'll definitely like this one. I'm downloading right now the Theora video via BitTorrent. Dugg this great news.
- Ayavaron, on 05/31/2008, -0/+10Actually, Pixar uses an in-house proprietary animation software called Marionette, not Maya.
Blender, if I recall correctly, had a similar origin; created as a proprietary piece of software for the needs of a studio that created it. However, when the company responsible for Blender went out of business, some fine folks bought the rights to the software and open-sourced it. - Acglaphotis, on 05/31/2008, -0/+10Elephant's Dream was the one of the best philosophical movies i've seen. When i showed it to my friends they told me 'lol the kid's name is emo' : (. I need better friends.
- fuzzynyanko, on 05/31/2008, -1/+11Blender is designed to be heavily keyboard-driven. Try Ctrl-Z.
- Jerky1312, on 05/31/2008, -0/+10A lot of those people listed in the credits weren't directly involved in the making, but were people who purchased the pre-sale DVDs to help support the movie's completion. I think the actual movies was created by a group of 9 animators/musician/producer/software engineer. There are the guys who scored the music, the script and the countless number of people who worked on the software who indirectly helped make this happen.
Here is the link to the direct creators...

- petethepanda, on 05/31/2008, -2/+11I'm all for open source stuff, but Pixar could animate circles around most everybody else on the planet right now, Maya or no Maya.
- drfnord, on 05/31/2008, -1/+10Much, much better than Elephants Dream.
- dinostabOMG, on 05/31/2008, -0/+9>[
As I mentioned, this was years ago. I looked into it, and in fact at that point undo had been suggested, and the community had rebuffed the suggestion.
Also, if you use any software professionally, I'm pretty sure you don't hunt the menus for everything. - digichris, on 05/31/2008, -0/+8Torrent links that work plz...
- inactive, on 05/31/2008, -0/+8Thinking about how hard is to make such thing gives me headaches but then I after seeing the credits and how many people worked on it doesn't seem like that anymore. They did a great job!
- exomni, on 05/31/2008, -3/+11Now if only Open Source could figure out how to deal with 500 - Internal Server Error.
- sarixe, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6Blender makes places
- l800LEMMINGS, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6even though blender isn't the industry standard with constant results at this level it very well could be
- argonaut99, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6Movies that tell a great story w/o dialogue are a challenge and this one is an incredible achievement and fun to watch. But they'd only be half of what they are without a well written and performed score.
Huge kudos to the musician(s). You put together a perfectly complimentary piece to go with the visuals. - int19h, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6ok, solved: torrents
- Hunkadoodle, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6I totally feel you! When I see some of the things Pixar does, I want to be able to recreate them right away. I think the scene that really got me inspired to learn 3D was the inside the brain fly-through out to Edward Norton's face at the beginning of Fight Club (the first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club, I know).
I do have to disagree with brettmurf, though. Maya and Max have been around longer than Blender (in its current Open Source form), and that might contribute to the disparity in the amount of peer created resources, but Blender does have an established user base. I won't inundate you with links here, but here are a few.
The main Blender user community is at:
http://www.blenderartists.org
Blender has its own forum at CGTalk:

The Blender community as a whole is, in my opinion, very supportive and encouraging. The quality of the community is on par with any commercial application, even if the existing library of material is not yet as vast. The beauty of the Open Movie is that all the resources used to make the movie are freely available for you to open, edit and use (according to the license) in whatever way you want! Goodbye, blobs wrapped around each other! Hello, production quality characters and rigs! I'd like to see Pixar open up its production files! All I can ask is that you give it time and a chance. For me, it has been very rewarding so far. - blendermf, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5this movie is awesome. The quality is insane, with all of the fur, grass, trees, leaves. The details are crazy. Can't wait for apricot(which is based on these characters), and project durian after(with explosions, actions, fire, etc)
- petethepanda, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5the torrents are fast
- theWaterboy, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5Really outstanding animation! I love the purple bird on the branch.

can someone post mirrors for the all the .torrent files from the official site? - arcticblue, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5I'm seeding the 720p h264 version. I'm on a 100M connection so hopefully it goes quick for you.
- Kral, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5I don't know how to do art with pen and paper, so expecting Blender to let me produce amazing art is kinda like buying a sportscar and expecting to be able to win races. Nevertheless, it's fun to try. :)
- exomni, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5Not any more. I'm getting a 500 - Internal Server Error.
- inactive, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4Real men don't need mirrors.
- Audacitor, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4Oh c'mon it's not that bad... It's a clean anus, at least.
Besides, they had to figure out some way to show Blender's metaball capabilities, didn't they? - nakani, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4mirror is down
- wontstoptalking, on 05/30/2008, -0/+4There is a reply button. There is no need for that here.
