- sirhomer, on 03/25/2008, -4/+601) Find out who makes your wifi card / chipset
2) Send them a letter, e-mail requesting Linux support
Contrary to popular belief, it is nearly impossible for the Ubuntu or Linux kernel developers to write good drivers without specifications and firmware from the manufacturer. You can trace every single wifi problem, every single one - to a hardware manufacturer who refuses to release Linux drivers or specifications. And until they do, this will never change.
When you buy a new computer, and I don't care if you are a Windows only user, or casual Linux user. If you ever have a slight interest in Linux, that in some time in the distant future you'd want to play with Linux, I highly suggest you buy Linux-compatible hardware.
The difference between a failed install and a perfect install with absolutely no need to even touch a driver (everything is done automatically) is Linux-compatible hardware. For my Dell Insperion machine, I did not install a single driver, ever, and everything including the wifi works flawlessly. When you install Linux on a machine and everything just works perfectly with open source drivers, you reached Linux nirvana. This is possible today. - CoolHandRemy, on 03/25/2008, -4/+42I just want my wireless card to work please. :)

- Ub3rg33k, on 03/25/2008, -1/+29If you use the beta and have a problem, REPORT IT DON'T JUST BITCH ABOUT IT.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy - snowblindnz, on 03/25/2008, -6/+271 more month till stable release!
But seriously, is there ANYONE who uses it daily with the default brown/orange? - joebaloney, on 03/25/2008, -1/+19I have used the default for large stretches of time. I think it looks pretty nice.
- judicar, on 03/25/2008, -1/+16"stable-ish"
Is that like "strategery"? - Ub3rg33k, on 03/25/2008, -0/+12Easily possible. Right click on the task bar and arrange as you wish.
- freexe, on 03/25/2008, -1/+13What about standby? I wish Ubuntu would have a list of laptops/hardware that 100% work, and advice people to get those. It's really hard to find which things to buy that will 100% work.
- venkat23, on 03/25/2008, -4/+16here is more screenshots http://www.debianadmin.com/ubuntu-804-hardy-heron- ...
- Samtherocker, on 03/25/2008, -1/+13you have a zune don't you
- daftman, on 03/25/2008, -0/+10Not the background. I keep the Window theme because I couldn't be bothered and it doesn't look that bad, but I changed wallpaper, Icons set and pimp my grub, splash and gdm
- newslang, on 03/25/2008, -0/+9I love Ubuntu but it really needs a new default theme.
- matriculated, on 03/25/2008, -0/+8Yeah - I use Xubuntu which uses a nice cool blue theme by default.
- Ub3rg33k, on 03/25/2008, -1/+9I hope you opened a ticket on Lauchpad (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu) instead of just complaining about it on Digg.
- chris9902, on 03/25/2008, -5/+13Good job it's Unbuntu brown and not Zune brown.....
- freezerburn666, on 03/25/2008, -2/+10i made mine look like vista *sigh*
- Persian5Life, on 03/25/2008, -12/+19Ubuntu is an amazing operating system but unfortunitly it has some draw backs with regards to playing games, that is the only reason that i have dual boot machine. all in all Ubuntu>vista.
- theaceoffire, on 03/25/2008, -7/+14Cause we all know that the color of your OS is so important.
Not like you can change it. Nope. - Spr0k3t, on 03/25/2008, -6/+13That's easy, just make sure your wireless card is one that is well supported. Most laptops now use minipci cards which can be changed out.
- deadbaby, on 03/25/2008, -0/+7I thought the same thing... turns out there's a growing trend trend among some laptop makers (HP & Lenovo are the two I confirmed) to lock the BIOS with specific device IDs. If you put in an "unapporved' wireless card the system will boot to a BIOS message saying "unsupported wireless card detected. system halted" I'm kinda surprised I hadn't heard about it... very sketchy stuff.
- Vektuz, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6Is it necessary to use Envy? I've been running ubuntu (even pre-hardy) and the restricted driver manager worked w/o having to do the Envy install thing... it installed very recent nvidia drivers that automatically matched the kernel...
- jakethecake, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6'idea #22: GUI for ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall)'
It's listed at Ubuntu brainstorm, with around a thousand user votes.
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/22/ - daftman, on 03/25/2008, -3/+8I can confirm this. My Dell Inspiron 600m uses Intel wireless card which work perfectly out of the box. Graphic card, on board sound card, also work flawlessly.
- daftman, on 03/25/2008, -4/+9No they don't. Why built a GUI firewall software when there are already many GUI firewall software outthere.
Look up Guarddog, Firestarter, Kmyfirewall, etc
http://wiki.debian.org/Firewalls
Please tell the difference between distro maintainers (Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse), desktop environment developers (Gnome, KDE, XFCE) and software developers (Firefox, Eclipse, etc)
You don't ask your electricity company to build you a toaster despite your toaster requires electricity. - andycr512, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5It's completely configurable. You can move the window list from the bottom panel to the top then delete the bottom panel, getting as much screen space as Windows. You can also make the panels tiny if you wish, or autohide them.
- Vektuz, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5this bug depends on bug #1
- HonoredMule, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5But they aren't responsible for user modifications.
- andrewbash, on 06/11/2009, -3/+7Iptables in Ubuntu is completely secure by default, why do you need a gui?
If you're really paranoid just sudo aptitude install firestarter - Aitese, on 03/25/2008, -1/+5My WiFi worked out of the box in Gutsy...but they managed to stick some experimental flaky driver in Hardy (admited on the serialmonkey website) and it's dead now...no sound either.
- phantom_mullet, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4I was very pleased to find that essentially all of my hardware was supported out of the box. Back when I first tried Ubuntu (I think it was Warty or Dapper...), I had to tinker for hours to try to mess with everything.
Major props to the developers (and to any companies that have released firmware specs)... - DarkDx, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4ohhh just like fedora's restricted manager... oh wait.. that one was ubuntu's original idea. Everybody implements something eventually, search, desktop effects, journaling, etc. OMG NEXT HAD A DOCK BACK IN 1998!!!11111
- Ub3rg33k, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4File a report so it can be fixed https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/
- thecodingstudio, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3and more...
Ubuntu: http://www.thecodingstudio.com/opensource/linux/sc ...
Kubuntu: http://www.thecodingstudio.com/opensource/linux/sc ... - secrity, on 03/25/2008, -2/+5What language is that?
- Vektuz, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3That IS one of the big features in hardy, y'know
- kiwiboyus, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3If this is happening when you try to boot the live CD try selecting to boot in safe graphics mode, then once you do the install the restricted drivers manager might be able to install the drivers you need.
- HonoredMule, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3I find the theme endures extended use far better than others that one might generally consider prettier. It actually does a really good job of not being too bland, dark, bright, low-contrast, OR harsh on the eyes. That's not an easy balance to strike.
- mrsteveman1, on 03/25/2008, -1/+4Distros write software all the time, who do you think wrote Upstart? Thats right, a guy working for canonical.
They do need an integrated firewall GUI, it can't be just another random package people can install. - renegadeafk, on 03/25/2008, -0/+334 bit?
- apoc2050, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3Hey look, its Ubuntu! ... Yeah
- mrsteveman1, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3They may not be responsible, but on the other hand what does HP have to GAIN by locking the bios to the wireless card that came with it?
It makes much more sense that they had to do it to satisfy the FCC, just like most of the wlan companies have to lock their drivers to approved channels if the chip can tune a wider range, like atheros chips. - inactive, on 03/25/2008, -1/+4Not every Mac user is a apple fanboy...
- zwaldowski, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3I've said it before and I'll say it again. Fedora is great. RPM bites.
- mrsteveman1, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3Thats because they have to certify the entire device as compliant with FCC regs. If you swap an integrated component out it may not comply anymore. Of course I'm sure most of these cards comply anyway but thats the situation.
- kazamx, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3You can download the Hardy Iso when then final verson is released. Burn the iso to a disc and pop it in your drive and reboot. You can boot into a fully working desktop without it installing anything on your computer. It will be VERY slow, as its running from the CD/Ram and not the hard drive. You can then play about with the desktop, try out sound, wireless, graphics etc. If they all work then there is an install icon on the desktop.
- bsmang, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3I just installed the 8.04 beta on my daughter's computer with a USB wireless adapter, it sucked. It saw it and used it, but it didn't work well or for more than a few seconds at a time. I went to "Add/Remove Software" and installed the ndiswrapper package (which is free now as opposed to a couple years ago when I bought a copy for $20) and then installed the windows driver using that and it's fine.
- HonoredMule, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3Here.
I think the better question is what. - inactive, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3Agreed. I actually like the theme, it distinguishes Ubuntu from other distros and OS's.
- mercurysquad, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3It will keep getting postponed. Has been happening since Edgy ...
