- jmdsdf, on 01/30/2009, -0/+28Good to know, but for practical use get Download Helper for Firefox. Download Helper works magic and is cross-platform.
- LostOverThere, on 01/31/2009, -2/+13Because Windows users Digg them.
- saguratus, on 01/31/2009, -0/+11Flamebaiting just shows you've got nothing better to do other than try to pick pointless fights with anonymous people who don't give a *****.
Use the operating system that best suits your needs. Tutorials help people become proficient at something,
Here's a "special TUTORAL" for you on how to type - http://www.nimblefingers.com/
You sound like you need it, however by your logic, voice recognition is obviously a superior input method, as it doesn't require such a difficult and complicated howto. - fxu1989, on 01/31/2009, -0/+9Like jmdsdf said, use the firefox addon Video DownloadHelper .
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/300 ... - Codename, on 01/31/2009, -0/+9First off, I don't think this is a "SPECIAL" tutorial, Download Helper is a only a Firefox plugin, also please get a new keyboard as well, you're typing like crap.
- Sealbhach, on 01/29/2009, -1/+7Yeah, it's very handy. I have a bookmark in Nautilus for /tmp so I just nip in there and yoink!
- udha, on 01/31/2009, -0/+5For those who think Firefox crashes under linux, try killing all flashplayer processes and see what happens. To those who think copying a file from your /tmp folder is diffucult and therefore makes windows superior, you are idiots. To those who already know about the /tmp trick for flashplayer flv content cache, and are using gnome, try clicking once on your desktop, then type the forward slash: / and you will be able to jump immediatly to any folder you wish, including simply root (/). It's like a souped-up version of the "WinFlag+E" of the Windows land.
- MonkeyFarts, on 01/31/2009, -1/+6Because you haven't yet hit that customize button at the top of the page and unchecked the Linux/Unix box.
- lowtolerance, on 01/31/2009, -1/+6I use Download Helper, and it does what its supposed to do. My only issue with that compared to this technique is that I end up downloading the video twice - once to watch it, and another time to save it. I'm using Verizon's EvDO as my broadband service at home(don't ask why) and they impose a 5GB/mo cap, so I realize I'm kind of in a special category here.
- rkiga, on 01/31/2009, -0/+5let the video buffer finish before saving and it won't create a separate download. you may need to increase the "menu entry expiration" settings in download helper for longer videos or slower connection so that the links won't disappear. check the "behavior" tab
- ZachJack, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4I love digg.
Make fun of OS X next! - censormagnet, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4cool that wouldve saved me alot of trouble when firefox crashes with like 6 tabs of google videos
- Echomote, on 01/31/2009, -3/+7I think it's because people rarely bury, it's either digg or not.
Except comments, people love to bury comments. - reddikilowatt, on 01/31/2009, -1/+5I think it's great that this stuff gets up front. It shows that Linux is nothing to be afraid of.
- rkiga, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3yup, use download helper, or just add "pwn" before "youtube" like http://www.pwnyoutube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0
- lowtolerance, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3@rkiga: did not know that. thanks.
- techtock, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3I use DownloadHelper for Firefox, too. It supports hundreds of sites and all you have to do is click the drop-down box next the icon while a video is playing and click the video file. You can usually just download the audio if that's all you want. In the Windows version you can have it automatically convert to .avi when it's finished downloading but not in Linux because you have to install a small video conversion program. Might work with Wine but I haven't tried it.
- Myztry, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3http://file2hd.com/ for youtube and several other sites.
It's browser based so it doesn't really matter what OS you are using (such as phone).
Linux is brilliant at working out whether a file is a video when the filename extension isn't passed though.
The whole (Q)DOS three character extension legacy is lame and unfortunately ubiquitous.
The AVI fourCC format is a bit better though it was stolen from the IFF format Electronic Arts invented for the Amiga. - MonkeyFarts, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3Buried for retard.
- secrity, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3The first article on that page is:
"Microsoft Windows 7 Beta HD Video Walkthrough"
I didn't see any Unix/Linux/VMware articles - PaulRay, on 01/31/2009, -2/+5Because you haven't clicked the customize button at the top of the page to uncheck the Linux/Unix box.
- takatoo, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3did someone clicked on the youtube play button?
i did
<_< - jamesmcm, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3Just use TamperData in Firefox.
- djb28, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2I often download the file right away, and then watch the saved video. Of course, this only works if you know that it's the right video.
- DreadKnight, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2www.forinside.com (server side)
http://elltube.sourceforge.net (client side) - pichinde, on 01/31/2009, -2/+4This is great and all but is there any linux user out there who didn't already know this?
Oh well, all the more towards critical mass. Up the Penguins! - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2I haven't read the article but I found that a few months ago! It is handy.
- bsmang, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2I tried to suggest this is how I did it a long time ago, but I was lambasted by Windows diggers who preferred browser plugins to do the same thing.
cp /tmp/Flash* ~/Desktop/somemovie.flv - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2www.keepvid.com
- eseven73, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2Great tips thanks udha! I've been using Linux off and on for 2 years and I never knew about the 'click on desktop and hit forward slash key' for file manager!
- habbofresh, on 01/31/2009, -1/+2Just the ***** who think they're special.
- lowtolerance, on 01/31/2009, -1/+2I just found a utility that does something similar to this, but for Windows. VideoCacheView extracts FLV's from IE's and Mozilla's cached files. Normally you can't do this because Flash locks the file and cleans it up when you exit your browser. It's a tiny utility and it does exactly what it says it does.
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/video_cache_view.html - rub3nmv, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1Firefox + Flashgot + kget/gwget (or whatever you want)
- maximumsteve1, on 01/31/2009, -1/+2I'm not sure how well the Download Helper works but... I wrote a firefox extension that downloads videos as well. That stuff needs to be maintained and handcoded per site for the most part.
Instead use firebug, enable network monitoring, and then find the flv link (or find the relatively huge ass file that is most likely the video) and open the link in a separate tab. Save to your desktop and voila. You can also use this method to download streaming music. - Azathothh, on 02/02/2009, -0/+1can you play Crysis with that?
- mrBitch, on 02/01/2009, -0/+1If you're using Safari as your web browser (using WINE under Linux), it's even easier to download ANY movie or audio stream :
1. click on the "Activity Window" from the "Window" menu.
2. double click on the FLV (or other) file listed, that's it... the file downloads to your local drive.
http://www.digitrain.com/blog/?p=81 - cantormath, on 01/31/2009, -1/+2The more idiots announce they know how to do this, the faster google will fix the problem. You shouldn't brag, this is very old.
- mohtasham, on 02/01/2009, -0/+1I DIDN'T, BUT i WILL DO IT NOW.
- tko21, on 02/01/2009, -0/+0awesome article thank u. espcially teh / on the desktop. thanks guiz i love this site
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -3/+2Yeah, it's really handy
- ContentHouse, on 01/31/2009, -5/+1Nice, check out this site for more Linux, Solaris, VMWare and lots of cool stuff... Enjoy... http://www.atomicsub.net
- getter1, on 01/31/2009, -7/+2if linux is such a supreme system why do I keep seeing these digg articles explaining features that are easy to use and don't require an entire web page to explain how to save embedded files?
- EVILTHETURTLE, on 01/31/2009, -12/+7Why do simple Linux tutorials keep getting on the front page?
- syntaxgs, on 01/31/2009, -16/+4HTis is proof that windows is the better platform bcause yu don,t need special TUTORALS to get this to work on windows =P
- godinster, on 01/31/2009, -20/+3buried for linux

What is Digg?
