- Snowfort, on 03/25/2008, -5/+14The Linux client is fantastic, just wish more big companies could have the level of commitment that S2 does.
- HalloweenSII, on 03/25/2008, -4/+10The game was made by an indie developer, S2. Not a big name, like Blizzard and such.
Yet it has one of the best gameplay compared to today's games. It deserves some attention.
Heh, and the fact that the developers actually communicate with their playerbase, and play the game with them is also a rare sight. - MDigNewb, on 03/25/2008, -6/+12Why the move to bury this as spam or gaming the system? It's true these are mostly members of the savage 2 forum community, but they are real people and not spammers or corporate shills.
Digg is about promotion, right? You even admit gaming for linux is great, often overlooked and under-attended by developers... it's legitimately interesting item for the people that dugg the story. I mean, you like something, you get your friends to digg it, and they vote to digg it.
I honestly don't understand the move to downgrade all comments and bury the story. - inactive, on 03/25/2008, -5/+10Yeah I don't wanna be the 'spammers' but this game is awesome. Savage 1 was cool, but this is a totally awesomer experience, so much more finished than savage 1.
- Ryo2810, on 03/25/2008, -2/+7The developers have nothing to do with this digg. This is all community based thanks.
- elliooo, on 03/25/2008, -3/+8Good to see more developers supporting Linux, hopefully bigger companies will begin to follow.
- TotalHalibut, on 03/25/2008, -4/+8Fact of the matter is this is a social news network. Something relevant gets posted, people digg it, and they ask their friends and communities to digg it. It happens every minute of every day. Some do it more effectively than others, but none can deny that a major multiplayer release on the Linux platform is a story worth checking out.
- Riluske, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4Really? Come on. Every time wow comes out with a new dungeon, the digg community goes crazy. News about a new map on halo gets a massive vote up. What's the difference here?
If anything, I would jump to help these people out. They are the little guy. They are a group of 30 or so people running an independent gaming company. Saying "they are looking to get your $30" is such bs. Sure, they need money to survive as a gaming company, but if they were out for your money, then they wouldn't have put Savage 1 out for free! You need to get a life. - pinion120, on 03/26/2008, -3/+7Savage 2 is a fantastic game. The best part is its run by an indie dev who bypassed the publisher AND actually sent those savings to the gamer.. 30 bux for a FULL fledged game. The other best part is -- LINUX support!!! Seriously guys, this kinda thing deserves to have the word out. There are not many indie dev houses out there and they need our support.
- MDigNewb, on 03/25/2008, -2/+6If you are curious, see http://forums.s2games.com/showthread.php?t=9619. 8 pages of forum posts supporting to move to digg the article. Pretty much all the supporters in that thread have accounts which are tagged as having paid for savage 2, and have hundreds of posts on that forum... it's either the best most involved attempt to game the system, or it's a legitimate community trying to make its voice heard.
Go there, and you tell me. - Helikaon, on 03/26/2008, -3/+6Enough with the burying.
The purpose of this Digg was to let the Linux/Unix community know that there is FINALLY a multiplayer game that supports the Linux OS. If you feel that is not news worthy then by all means continue with your E-Policing.
-Sorry about the double post earlier. - nemoder, on 03/26/2008, -3/+6It's great to see more companies supporting Linux natively, and with a 64bit build! (shame on you Adobe)
It's a fairly unique game too, not the typical shooter we usually end up with. I hope it does well! - TotalHalibut, on 03/26/2008, -2/+5At present though, you and your bury brigade are attempting to handicap the efforts of Linux game developers. To what end exactly? What is your agenda? I mean you'd have to be a fool of gigantic proportions to think that hampering the efforts of Linux developers could possibly be a good thing for the platform.
- Stanz, on 03/26/2008, -2/+5More fail.
"creating separate user accounts for the purpose of artificially altering Digg's services" - There is no evidence of anyone creating more than one account per person.
"giving or receiving money or other remuneration in exchange for votes" - There is no evidence for this.
"participating in any other organized effort that in any way artificially alters the results of Digg's services" - 'Artificially altered'? You couldn't word that much more inconspicuously, terms of uses are sketchy at best anyway. The way I am reading this is it suggests an effort to cheat the system in a way that was not provided 'naturally', simple timing and spreading the word does not significantly change that. - kneeare, on 03/26/2008, -3/+6how is this spam? the gamers of this game would like more people to play, so they post it here. yes, its preplanned, so what. If it wasnt, and i saw this, I would digg it regardless.
- qpingu, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3Digg is an amazing site not because of these systematic diggbombs, but because the masses are able to choose what they want to see. When a small community exerts its will upon Digg, we can only get a biased fraction's opinion, and it undermines the institutions that the site runs by.
-- pingu - Dennisjr13, on 03/26/2008, -4/+7Great game, and an amazing game for you Linux users. Give it a try ;)
- Remmy, on 03/25/2008, -1/+4Okay. I'll judge it on it's merits.
1. It was posted and dugg up so fast that it's impossible for it not to have been preplanned.
2. It's admitted in these comments that the forum members are digging it up which means they were told about it.
3. Most of the comments are from people that just registered or have been inactive for months and this is the only story they have commented on.
Gaming digg is bad, mmkay? - qpingu, on 03/26/2008, -2/+5Dymlos, I would agree with you if it weren't for the fact that you are completely wrong. (:P)
- S2 may be indie, but they do not develop games for fun. It is actually cheaper to sell the game via the internet.
- There is absolutely no problems with Sav2 being on Digg, it's just the fact that it was diggbombed and forced to the top that are getting people upset, just like a cheater would upset others in another situation.
- Savage 1 was released for free as a way of generating hype for Sav2. If you believe otherwise, visit the Sav1 page and try to tell me how innocent all those links to Savage 2 are.
- Once again, this is not being dug down for being a cheap game or because it has a trial, but because of the means at which it got popular. Seriously, submit stories about Savage 2 the proper way next time and give Digg users the chance to have a say on what they like rather than be forced to see what the Savage community wants us to see. - TotalHalibut, on 03/25/2008, -5/+7Wrong, this is being dugg by the community. The developers have no part in it, and being a cynical bitch isn't going to change that. They all started digging at the same time? So in other words, someone posted it, and people read it? Digg provides the tools to do just that, it's completely legit. Millions of sites and forums have Digg button capabilities and some of them have very active communities. Your logic is fallacious in extremis.
You want your platform supported, and yet when a company releases a Linux client you actively try to bury it? Are you ***** retarded? - Dennisjr13, on 03/26/2008, -1/+3Pingu is sexy.
- lairek, on 03/25/2008, -3/+5But really, do you have ANY credible evidence that these socalled "new" accounts were created by a person to inflate it? No? What if we just felt like digging it because we happen to agree with it. I have not gotten anything in exchange for my vote, and I doubt anyone else has. So please, explain to me what has been done to "artificially inflate" this digg?
- TotalHalibut, on 03/26/2008, -4/+6Anybody else find it hilarious that Remmy has nothing better to do than sit here digging down every comment posted?
Let's keep him up all night fellas :> - BloodyIron, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2I played the client this morning. I have yet to find a bug. All devices are properly supported, graphics are as good as in windows (if not better), and it works with no hastle at all. Only thing I had to do was chmod +x it, and tell it where to install; then play. All graphical settings are available to me (except AA, but I suspect that may be nVidia)
- Remmy, on 03/25/2008, -6/+7Really? Then explain while all the comment are coming from accounts that were just created.
- JRPereira, on 03/25/2008, -8/+9Can't wait to see more players playing this - it's a really great game, just requires a good quality team to shine.
- BloodyIron, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1I'll have you note that the game is _COMPLETELY FREE_ for LAN play. They outright state this, and you only ever have to pay for online access, just once.
- TotalHalibut, on 03/25/2008, -5/+6Digg is being used as intended fella. I somehow doubt any forum would appreciate random users registering and posting an advertisement.
Linux could use more modern titles, and this one particularly has a very well coded client, which is something even the larger developers haven't managed yet. This is newsworthy. - Dymlos, on 03/26/2008, -4/+5You extremely weird down-diggers need to realize some obvious stuff:
1) S2 (the developers of Savage 2) are indie-developers. They're not in this for the money. They're not even selling the game on store shelves. If they wanted money, they'd go work for some whore like EA.
2) The community created this post, and TotalBiscuit organized it.... HE"S NOT A DEVELOPER! He's a member of the community who has often helped out free of charge.
3) The game has a free 5 hour trial/demo. How are people at digg.com being lured into purchasing the game? It's free to register, download, install, and to play for 5 hours. Hell, you could make multiple demo accounts and it gets you about 90% of the full game. Even then, the price on the full game is $29.99 no tax, no shipping. That's cheap anyways. What are you on, Remmy and others? Is this all you know? What do you have multiple accounts to thumb down every comment posted 5-20 times? I think you're the big abusers / violators.
3) How else would Linux gamers come to find out about this game? They aren't putting advertisements on websites or TV, etc.
Savage 2 is fun as hell, now it's even more fun, and these changes merit digging. Done, end of story. - manias329, on 03/27/2008, -2/+3People have said it before, and I will say it again. Savage 2 is a great game, that is unlike anything else on the market. It transcends genres and provides an intensely competitive scene. It has full stat tracking, replays of every game ever played, fully integrated clan support, and you can play a demo free for 5 hours. Also, it is published by a great group of indie developers who are continually improving the game and sorting out any issues that pop up.
This is not something that happens for linux very often, so will all of you please stop complaining about the fact that there was an organized community effort to give this game the attention it deserves. If there had been no effort this would have disappeared into the digg graveyard not because it isn't newsworthy, but because people just wouldn't notice it. - iammatt00, on 03/25/2008, -7/+8Sweet, will be able to run it on my other box now!
- PublicRecord, on 03/25/2008, -3/+4i picked this game up a few weeks ago and i haven't put it down since... i'm addicted! check it out and see why.
- TotalHalibut, on 03/25/2008, -3/+4They aren't. Sure there's a good number of new accounts, but there's plenty of old-timers too. Perhaps rather than acting like Digg's personal policeman, you should judge the article on it's own merits, and perhaps the game too. The last thing Linux needs, is a modern title being ignored because some guy got his panties in a wad.
- leszek, on 03/26/2008, -2/+3From Pingu in your forum:
"People on digg get upset when the system is abused. Every other article on Digg started out with 1 digg and made its way to the front page based on people who actually visit Digg regularly and look for the worthy articles. The ends do not justify the means, if you know what I'm getting at. It's cheating, regardless of how you try and spin it." - HairballPaul, on 03/25/2008, -4/+5The game is awesome, but so is the company too. I've never known such a great development team such as S2Games. They're extremely community focused and aren't afraid to accept criticism and turn it into something wonderful. Most of this patch (baring the Linux Client) was inspired by the communities wants and dislikes. Also the S2 team are all gamers themselves and the lead designer is infamous for getting involved when playing a game, so if there's any game-breaking or annoying bug/feature/anything then you can be damned sure it's gonna get sorted out.
And I'd only count this as spam if it had no content. It has content, great content. - skamper, on 03/29/2008, -1/+2I think this is now the best native linux game there is.
- TotalHalibut, on 03/26/2008, -2/+3How does one 'artificially inflate' a count via legitimate diggs?
The burden of proof, good sir, is on the accuser. If you have no evidence to prove that this is some attempt to subvert the natural order of things, then your comment is little more than libel. - poison2003, on 03/26/2008, -1/+2this isnt an MMO...
- qpingu, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Dymlos, I joined the Sav2 forum in 2006, and even then it was a year since the promised beta release. There is no mistaking the fact that Savage 1 was, by that point, turning little profit and the S2Games guys did the smart thing and released the game for free. But why? Sure, the reasoning is ambiguous and there may have been a voice in S2 that wanted to release Savage 1 for the sake of the people, but in reality it was a brilliant plan to continue Savage's success by making the game free. I cannot speak for the date when it was first released as freeware, but I do know that ever since I've been playing Savage 1, there has always been some sort of link to Savage 2 on the download page. S2Games is no fool, and with a free game providing a userbase and hype, Savage 2 could do quite well. I am not bashing S2Games for employing this technique (I actually welcome it), but using it as an excuse to claim that S2Games really cared about its users is stretching it a bit far, especially when people like Maliken are now at the helm (a great guy who gets too caught up in HIS game).
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -1/+2awesomer?
- Ryo2810, on 03/25/2008, -8/+9This is great, now some friends of mine will be able to finally play.
- Remmy, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1I love you comment. It's often said that when logical defense has been defeated, people will result to name calling, insults, and violence. I see you're 17 years old. That's great.
- Dymlos, on 03/26/2008, -3/+4Forgot to mention, S2 also released their first game, Savage 1, FOR FREE! They took half their work so far, and made it free. How is that money-grubbing?
Bigger issue though: You're down-digging a Linux port of a game...... sorry it's just hard for my ears to hear, "You're down-digging a Linux port of a game" I'm pretty sure that makes you the Anti-Christ. It's like down-digging a small coffee store that's offering good, cheap coffee when compared to StarBucks.
At best, Remmy, and others like Remmy (ew), I think you got upset by the wording. Hearing "free trial" probably set off your radars. It's basically the game free for 5 hours. Call it a demo, call it whatever, it's not like a "free trial of some new anti-virus!". Meh - BloodyIron, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0The graphics are really good for the kind of gameplay that is involved. It is not ground-breaking, however it still looks really good. Take note, the only graphical element missing from linux (at least my experience, this may change for others) was the AA, every other setting was available and ran as well or better in linux compared to windows.
If you are curious about the game, I recommend you download it and create a trial account. - sqwertyface, on 03/26/2008, -4/+4Played the free trial a few days ago and had a lot of fun so ended up buying it the next day. Fun, original game with a friendly community.
I'm all for indie devs too...I like these guys ;) - fiveofakind, on 03/26/2008, -4/+4Thats awesome, I totally forgot about the game until I saw this
- Shaguar, on 03/25/2008, -2/+2hmmm, i phail at commenting the right spot. That comment wasn't meant for TotalHalibut but for the "buried" comment.
- TotalHalibut, on 03/26/2008, -4/+4Buried for unrelated comments to the article in question.
- Enigma7x, on 03/26/2008, -3/+3Very good, surprisingly. You can see screenshots at the given link in the article.
- Enigma7x, on 03/26/2008, -4/+4This game is fantastic - for 11 guys or so they did a terrific job.
