- madformadness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Cool! linux!
- nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OpenSUSE is great.
+dugg - copperhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm familiar with Gentoo, where once it's installed, you're really never running a particular version. With my SUSE 10 box, do I need to do anything other than run the patches to keep it up to date, or do I need to to upgrade my SUSE 10 to 10.1 through some other means?
- nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You don't NEED to upgrade, but if you want to upgrade, I believe you can do so through Yast.
- knellotron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0^
Don't do a system upgrade to a beta though. Wait until it's ready. You can always update the packages you need through Yast, easily. - solidcube, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Beware of this release, they're not kidding when they tell you it has rough edges. Numerous problems with the package tree et cetera.
I'd wait on this one... the previous SuSE is perfectly serviceable and this release doesn't offer nearly as many improvements as it creates problems. - Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Again, why is an incremental Linux beta release news?
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i like it just because thers a TON of hardware suport.
and yast makes it easy to update stuff. - nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Don't do a system upgrade to a beta though. Wait until it's ready."
Right, and when you do upgrade, it's a good idea to backup important files, just in case
Here's a guide on upgrading through Yast (it's upgrading from 9.2 to 9.3 - but the idea is pretty much the same).

- zimm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0who cares... stop crapflooding this to the top..
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0which linux distro do you ppl use?
persionaly i use knoppix and suse
just wana know what u guys use..... - solidcube, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0fluoropixel: Heh.
- nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@fluoropixel: Very nice. Ripping on this story when you submit stories like "Man Using Apple Keyboard has 3rd Party Mouse that Mischievous Cat Enjoys".
http://digg.com/apple/Man_Using_Apple_Keyboard_has_3rd_Party_Mouse_that_Mischievous_Cat_Enjoys
I think this is a fine place to submit stories like this to. I would not have known about this release if I hadn't seen it here. If you don't think it's important ignore it, or even report it for all I care.
I think that if the creator of digg diggs the story (like in this case) it's important enough to be on here. But that's just my 2 cents.
@darth_tater: I use OpenSUSE mainly, and Knoppix and Kubuntu from time to time. - stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Don't do a system upgrade to a beta though. Wait until it's ready. You can always update the packages you need through Yast, easily."
Good point but there is somthing to be said about upgrading to the newest of the new when it comes to Linux. I recently upgraded to dapper drake from my perfectly rock solid version of brezey kubuntu. Dapper will not be offically released for months and it has caused some stability problems. I have also already had most of the benefit of dapper in brezzy such as kde 3.5 and firefox 1.5 but I just like beeing on the bleeding edge and it is fun to click apt-get upgrade and always find somthing new. Just be smart when upgrading to beta distro versions and when somthing breaks fix it and you will be just fine. I suppose part of the excitment of running linux for me is the fact that I don't have to waite years to get the newest stuff and I alwasy have somthing to tinker with. Open suse is not the offical suse release so by running it you should expect to have some problems however suse has been an interesting distro to watch recently and if this release implements the xgl stuff that has been in the tech news recently I'm sure it will be a blast to use. - nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@fluoropixel
Thanks for proving my point ;) - Bohab45, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0nilclopoop rofl
- SsbFalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You do know that this is more of a major release than minor? Technically, this should be considered an alpha due to how much the package manager has/is changing...
REad the page people,
Oh, and this is a bit old... I knew about it quite a while ago, but decided not to install it. And it will be a tad bit difficult to upgrade from SUSE 10 to 10.1, despite the minor revision number, though technically, every Suse release has a lot under the hood changed, best example being 9.2 to 9.3... - nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@fluoropixel: HAHA my username is nilclop and you added an extra "oop" to the end of it so that it says "poop" HAHA! That's hilarious! I wish you would put that kind of creativity into stories that you submit, because that "quality of digg stories" that you were talking about is a direct effect of what you are doing here. Instead of submitting ridiculous stories, and trolling the comments sections, why don't you contribute to the digg community somehow.
Now this is all I'm going to say to you because I don't want to ruin this story with a flame war. But again, great job with misconstruing my name, that was brilliant!
Grow up man. - SsbFalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And why didn't you link to http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org instead? No offense but I hate the mailing lists text thing...
Also http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs#SUSE_Linux_10.1_Beta4 As you will read, Beta 4 is a bit rough, but that's mainly in the package manager thing...
Sorry for double posting... - mayhemt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SuSe Rocks!!!!!..i thot ppl liked kubuntu...& gave a try..but it sucks!!...
- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ah, a beta version of a point release? this is exciting? oookay then.
- subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Linux is in the title, everyone Digg immediatly!
- tboutcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fine no more story's about Linux betas but then I don't want to see 1 more story about vista. Which is in beta. Quite bitching if you don't like the story then don't digg it.
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does anyone here appreciate kanotix at all?
- nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@tboutcher:
Amen brother. - solidcube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nilclop: I think he meant a wordplay on "nincompoop" which is actually pretty funny...
I'm with fluoropixel on this, by the way. A test release of SuSE is not front page news.
And like I said, be afraid if you install this. Very afraid. When they say "rough spots" they mean "Most of this release is made of 70 grit sandpaper." - nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@damentz: I've never tried Kanotix. I'm assuming it is a disto based on Knoppix, right? I've never really had a huge need for a live disto, unless I'm trying to recover data when Windows crashes, and then, I use Knoppix, or Mepis is also a great live distro.
I use Suse mainly because of Yast, it makes life so much easier. Also whenever I run into a problem, it's pretty easy to find a solution because Suse has pretty good documentation and a really helpful user-community.
Just out of curiosity (because I've never used it) what does Kanotix have over other distros? I've heard people mention the name and it seems pretty popular on distrowatch. Just wondering if it's worth trying out. - MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Suse is one of the best!
- UrbenLegend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@solidcube: nincompoop is a word used by kindergartners. It's good that you can agree with someone (in this case fluoropixel) and call him immature at the same time. Props to you.
Who cares if its a beta. If it makes it to the front page, that means enough people think that it's very cool. Just because you don't think this should be on the front page doesn't mean everyone else HAS to agree with you. Here, majority rules.
By the way, they finally fixed the weird usb bug that was in suse 10. I hope the suse team keeps up the good work. - Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0> Linux is in the title, everyone Digg immediatly[sic]!
Don't laugh! There are meatsticks on Digg who really do just exactly that.
Repeat after me: "OS advocacy is best understood as a psychiatric symptom." - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Who would want to run a buggy OS?
- CrazyZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've run various distros over the years but keep coming back to Suse. Suse 10 is very nice, I like it much more than Ubuntu. Saying that, I still find myself on XP more often than not. There are just too many work related things that I cannot do on any distro yet. I think if I didn't work in IT, Suse would be the only thing on my home PC.
I am really looking forward to 10.1. It's a step in the right direction at least for home use. - coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Who would want to run a buggy OS?"
I agree, that's why I don't run Windows. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am talking about Suse as a beta, moron...
