- info, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Finally, SCO gets what they deserve...
At market close today... SCOX is 1.22, down 0.78 (-39.0%)
;-) - chess007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11To oppose the Torvalds is folly. Microsoft should learn from this and never oppose the penguin. All hail the Torvalds.
- atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10People who shorted the stock made a ton of money. Making money and doing a good think at the same time -- that must feel great.

SCOX 5day on Yahoo Finance. Ouch. - kokorhekkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Total number of outstanding shares is a little over 21 million and according to yahoo finance 44.5% is held by insiders.
As for a buy-out I don't think it will happen. If you buy the whole company then you also buy the liabilities. Take a real world example: ABB bought a US company called Combustion Engineering. The problem was that Combustion Engineering got into a asbestosis lawsuit based on actions done long before ABB bought then. I guess you can say they didn't check the background of the company with due diligence. But they still couldn't duck the lawsuit which ended up costing them several hundred million dollars.
Then there's the problem: exactly what does SCOX own? They claim they bought Unix Sys V rights from Novell. But then why do they have to split the money for any new Sys V licenses 5/95 with Novell (yes, Novell gets 95% of all new Sys V license money). - dgh1973, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sleep with dogs and you wake up with fleas.
So sad, too bad.
I work for the U.S. government, and when the war started I had serious moral issues with what I did for a living. I considered quitting.
In the end I made the justifications I needed to in order to carry on with my life. Point being, we can all sit around and play dumb when a company we work for does wrong... play the drone and act like there is nothing we can do about it but that's not true. You can always move on and find other work. If you think you can't you are just making excuses for yourself. And if you decide not to then you have to be man enough to admit that YOU were the one that justified the situation to yourself, that you knowingly decided to carry on despite the fact that you didn't agree, and that is a burden that you and you alone are responsible for in the end. - kokorhekkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sorry forgot one more thing about why a buy-out will not happen. In 2004 the SCOX board initiated a so called "poison pill" plan which will make hostile takeovers very expensive. Which they of course did to jack up the price on any non-hostile takeovers as well.
"The plan, which was adopted by the board on Aug. 10, gives SCO's board the right to determine the "fair value" of the company in the event of a takeover attempt, McBride said" (Aug 10 2004 that is)

http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/08/31/HNscocaps_1.html - info, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Heh! Maybe darling Darl should take a lesson from George W. They both went in assuming they could win.
;-) - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's a real story now. The events really happened, and SCO is more or less a fish out of water at this point. Those unscrupulous bastards don't have a leg.
- XVampireX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Don't start a war when you know you're going to lose.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I never really thought it before.. but it's pretty disturbing to think that there pretty significant villains outside of SCO that were/are investing in them only in the hope they'd win their lawsuits.
These large holders are just as culpable for this, since they financed it:
http://moneycentral.msn.com/ownership?Symbol=SCO - yoyar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Leader... Leader... Leader... All hail the Torvalds.
- sirhomer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5SCO is close to worthless as a company
- steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6All bow down to the great one.
- shyboyswin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's good to see the beginning of their bad karma.
- ohcoaster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8why are they stocking tanks?
- blqysmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No judgements here, and I'm truly sorry for your situation. It's not easy to see your family's wellbeing threatened because of some corporate malfeasence (sp?) I would suggest that, given the current state of things, it might be time to start looking for a way to move my eggs to a different basket. SCO is not long for this world, in it's current form.
Good luck.... - green67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Poor Uncle Darl.....he seemed so sure of himself.....I wonder what the SEC will uncover when they go through his underwear drawer......
- dredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As far as Darl is concerned the entire SCO lawsuit was simply a pump & dump. He pumped and then he and all the other directors dumped their stock. Making a bucket load of cash. They're winners. MS are winners. Only (stupid) speculative stock-buyers are loser.
- nevetS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nobody has been able to short SCOX in a long time. It won't be too long until they are bought out. They might have no case, but that doesn't mean that ALL of their intellectual property is worthless.
They are down to 166 employees and the execs are all still taking home pretty huge salaries considering.
I wonder how many shares there are. I imagine there is at least one firm out there looking at the buyout possibilities when they lose this case altogether. - TSSaloic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A Modest proposal from Linux To SCO - Take your money and lawsuits and make them go away.
As dictated by the annoying overlord- Jack Thompson
As Spoken By The Benevolent Dictator for Life- Linus Torvolds. - TSSaloic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is true, yet some of the claims may be baseless. I hope nothing happens to you but SCO may be wrong.
- Strenoth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2only 'close to' worhtless? :)
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This becomes a real story when the stock remains persistently below $1
- spooq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@chrono13
Zoom out to the 5 year view and you'll see this is just the death rattle. Since Jan '04 it's been all downhill. - secretivecoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dr. DOS forever!
- Drahkar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the only downside to this is that the goal has already been completed. SCO got a huge investment from Microsoft right before these legal proceedings started. I, personally, have little doubt that the whole thing was a means of Microsoft trying to stall Linux long enough for them to get Vista completed. That goal has been successful.
Personally I think Microsoft has an uphill battle with Vista regardless, but the original goal has already been met.
Still, where is the party being held to celebrate the final collapse of SCO? - Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Like a land war in Asia?
- Bonzodog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An interesting twist to this would be for SCO to lose the lawsuit then Novell to offer to save SCO by buying them out for a measly sum like $1. That way, Novell owns EVERYTHING IP-wise of System V again.
- Excessive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Snoots
Who cares? These cases aren't new, the end is already presumed. SCO started bitcing years ago, since it became SCO again. If you lack the vision to see the end, and choose to depend on it, nothing to do here. Rest in pieces. - sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, don't worry. Give it another couple weeks and 1.22 per share for SCOX will seem high :)
- snoots, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2It's real easy for all of you who aren't affected by this to poke fun. Some of us depend on SCO for our livelyhood... Regardless of whether or not they're right, some people depend on this company to put food on their table.
- JerodSlay, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Submit this to World and Business, not Technology. No one here cares about stocks.
