It would be nice to see a similar article using a thin client type device using a remote-boot or other boot option that connects to a VM running on a headless server as in this article. The thin client should have no hard drive, just RAM and video resources.
Another idea would be a thin client running Boxee (www.boxee.tv) with a IR interface. I have seen a few very small and very low power devices that could potentially be mounted behind a wide screen Monitor / TV that would be excellent choices. - LastDitchHero, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2Virtual Machines are a great way to secure some of your more sensitive apps. Also remember VRDP so you can have some poor man's citrix action. Or that troublesome "killer app" that keeps your business from moving over or some of the machines to Linux.
- spectre_25gt, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2He's talking about ESXi. That's free and it's far from slow. If you're going to argue against it, at least bring up valid points. ESXi, for instance, does not play well with commodity hardware. Storage drivers are one of the biggest issues. You have to have a $300+ dollar card to support it. Either that or use iSCSI storage on another box.

- colin7151, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2I think virtualbox beats Vmware hands down on the desktop, but I dont think its intended to work as a server virtualization system. In my experience Vmware ESXi 3.5 is amazing. It is the fastest I have seen compaired to Xen and hyper-v and the most full featured. It is however mostly closed and the client runs only on windows, so if ESXi didn't work for you I would think Xen in some flavor (Sun looks to be releasing a super sweep Xen based virtualization server) would be a _way_ better bet than hacking something that is built to be run on the desktop.

- culbeda, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1That was my first thought. You have to be slightly more particular picking your hardware, but you get an EXTREMELY lean base OS out of it. The only problem is that you don't get to REALLY use the desktop / console (for 3D, etc.) You're stuck with remote access in one form or another.
