Run Linux inside Windows
andlinux.org — andLinux is a complete Ubuntu Linux system running seamlessly in Windows 2000 based systems (2000, XP, 2003, Vista [32-bit only]). andLinux is not just for development and runs almost all Linux applications in Windows without modification. It supports quick launch icons, start menu, system tray, Explorer shell extensions and file type associations.

- MadRat779, on 02/19/2008, -9/+46anyone know if can this run compiz fusion?
- Pr0v0st, on 02/19/2008, -3/+47It would look kind of strange, with compiz running on your linux apps and not your windows apps.
- capiCrimm, on 02/19/2008, -9/+11most likely not, and if it can it won't be very stable.
- GMorgan, on 02/19/2008, -0/+16The question is if the X Server they run can handle AIGLX. It is, apparently, based upon X.org.
- TheCoreh, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7Well, theoretically it would be possible, but you would need to somewhat abstract XGL using alpha blended windows in order to get it right... and it would probably be quite slow. But it really would be soooooooo much work.
- zekica, on 02/19/2008, -0/+28I don't think it is possible to run Compiz fusion, since it uses Xming X server for Windows which doesn't support compisiting. However, one should be able to start an XGL server inside Xming and use it's compositing features.
Since Xming supports OpenGL acceleration, it should work very well, but only inside a window.- thetedster180, on 02/20/2008, -1/+5head asplode

- charmgene, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1maybe in the future when linux becomes so popular and wine grows so powerful the developpers may think of writing apps for wine which can aslo run on windows, and most importantly, it performs better on linux using wine ;-)

- sonstone, on 02/19/2008, -1/+61How does this compare to cygwin? What's the startup time and memory consumption like?
- sirhomer, on 02/19/2008, -0/+16Cygwin is more a Linux compatibility layer, it's core is basically a DLL that accepts Linux/POSIX syscalls from applications. This uses a fullblown Linux kernel. So I think this would probably take more memory in exchange for better compatibility. But's it's probably a little less integrated (the website mentions no printing support).
- drr104, on 02/19/2008, -4/+12Well, for a start, cygwin isn't a way to run native Linux binaries in Windows
- OnipSemaj, on 02/19/2008, -13/+5Cygwin is an emulator, while andLinux is a virtual OS. I have run virtual OSs in Windows and they are much slower because they take up lots of memory (remember, its an entire other OS). Since cygwin only emulates the shell and X-server, it only takes up as much memory as needed for that program, and nothing more.
Here's an idea - don't run explorer.exe on startup and instead run andLinux as your desktop.- InferiorWang, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8according to the website...Things you will NOT get with andlinux: ANOTHER DESKTOP. Sometimes it helps to click through and read before you post.
- OnipSemaj, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1You are correct. I had assumed that since it said "andLinux is a complete Ubuntu Linux system...", then that would by definition include the gnome desktop. I got excited there for a minute!
- InferiorWang, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8according to the website...Things you will NOT get with andlinux: ANOTHER DESKTOP. Sometimes it helps to click through and read before you post.
- ladlestein, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Like what drr104 said. You can't run a native Linux executable on Windows using Cygwin; you have to recompile it. Cygwin is useful primarily (IMHO) for running common Unix-y tools, those that they've already compiled for it. Whereas andLinux will apparently let you run any old Linux executable. That's a horse of another color.
- crackah, on 02/19/2008, -8/+37Seems a little WTF to me!?

For a good way to run Windows in Linux get VirtualBox.... It's probably the best way. I've got XP Pro running in Ubuntu Edgy and when it's running full screen you can't even tell it's virtual. Load up on memory though and it helps to have dual processors.
- awasson, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7Good work on the humour... security & stability of Windows... That is awesome!
- zydeco, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8My company won't let me install Linux on my desktop PC. Everyone has to run Windows. Now I *can* run Linux. Doesn't seem WTF to me at all. Yeah, I know this has been around a while as coLinux, but this was a lot easier to install and run.

- SuperWinner, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Yeah that brings up a good point, are there very many Linux OSS apps that do not have a windows version? Scribus was the big thing I was waiting for but the win32 port is nearly flawless.
- peteboy1, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4....Isn't that what KDE4 is supposed to magically do?
- RobotBuddha, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1You have to wait for a KDE4 version of amarok first. Amarok2 should build on windows, but I don't find it all that usable even in linux yet. The KDE3 branch is much more feature complete and mature at this point in the amarok2 development cycle.
- Aryding, on 02/19/2008, -10/+16While this type of thing may be a great stepping stone for new users, it is not a good long term alternative because you're still stuck in the windows *viral* environment.
- CastrTroy, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4It's great for those who for whatever reason are stuck running windows, yet still want to use a few Linux apps. I have to use VS.Net at work, so I'm pretty much stuck in Windows while at work. However, it would be really nice to be able to run Linux apps at the same time.

- MacSuxWindozSux, on 02/19/2008, -1/+13If you need to develop/port Linux Apps using a Windows system.
Perhaps you own a laptop and don't have space/money for several separate computers.- benvd, on 02/19/2008, -17/+3lol... why would i want several computers? i have a laptop and a desktop..... i run xp on my laptop and KDE 4 on my Desktop.... you're a tard man... u didn't even "burn" me... in reality u just wasted space on Digg servers
- BTrey, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4Why would you want several computers? Is that, like, a trick question or something? Why WOULDN'T you want several computers?
I have four computers running in my home office - a Windows desktop, a Linux desktop, a Windows server and a Linux server. Windows server is a domain controller and strictly for internal network use. Linux server is an external server in a DMZ that runs my mail server, web server, etc. In addition to those four, I have one in the kitchen that's primarily for the wife to use but also comes in handy for looking up recipes and stuff, one in the family room for the kids to use, and one in my garage for research, streaming media, etc. (My sound system for the back yard and hot tub is in the garage.)
But as to the answer to your original question about just running Linux, I also have a company laptop. I'm allowed to install legal software, but I can't install Linux as it's part of the company domain and I need to access resources that are only available to computers on the domain. (It might be technically possible to install Linux and use Samba but that's not authorized.) - marx2k, on 02/20/2008, -0/+0@BTrey - wtf do you pay for your energy usage?

- SweetBearCub, on 02/19/2008, -5/+2Why not? The main purpose of Windows, for most home users (but, I'll confess, not all) is to run GAMES, in addition to whatever else they might want to use their systems for. Linux, while I'm sure it's great, just is not a viable gaming platform. And no, UT, AmArmy, et., al don't count in my book. Until I can walk into a store and get a boxed copy of a current & popular game for Linux, it isn't there yet.
- Myztry, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Most users play games on computers at one time or another. That bloody solitaire keeps em hooked for hours. Helps people relax while the kids are in the lounge on the console.

- linuxpenguin, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2There's far more games that get preinstalled with Linux than with Windows which makes it better for some of the casual gamer type who play Solitaire for hours.

- smacksaw, on 02/19/2008, -19/+42I have all of these nice, dual-core systems in my house that are hamstrung by Windows. I have set them all free with Ubuntu and Kubuntu. I run Windows apps in Wine or VMWare and it's about as good as the native Windows install.
But you're telling me that I can now run Linux in Windows, which is slower than my Linux alone? And I can have less RAM and use more of it? And then I can use my Linux apps from Windows, but without any of the speed benefit of Linux due to Windows' overhead?
I think I'll just boot into Windows when I want to play some games and stay in Linux the rest of the time.- lenninct, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3same thing i do
- betrayed, on 02/19/2008, -0/+20It's all about choice. There are some people who aren't allowed to run the full Linux desktop at work. This gives them access to their preferred applications.
- mossblaser, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2By the sounds of things though I don't think that this app would run in a work-environment. Whats best is to run a virtual machine (there are portable ones I assume) with your distro of choice, bring it home and sync it up.
- OnipSemaj, on 02/19/2008, -0/+13I think you are missing the point. You are going on a rant about how your awesome Linux system can run WIndows software.

Just as the Windows Installer takes care of it, so do DEB packages and package managers.
Cheap shot.- justice7, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1we're obviously not talking about ubuntu or windows vs ubuntu here now are we?
- Myztry, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1It's an Ubuntu derivative that runs on top of windows and uses apt/synaptic (SEE: package manager). So, yes we are.

- lenninct, on 02/19/2008, -14/+1is this old or what, i have ran DLS, Ubuntu, Knoppix and almost all live cd's out there using emulation software in Windows, and ran windows in Ubuntu linux as well...
- jrak, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1You must be a troll. There is a difference, see if you can find it.
- ucg1, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Well, coLinux has been around for a while, and this is basically a better integration of coLinux with the Windows desktop (or at least better packaging of it). So its not exactly new, more evolutionary than revolutionary.
But their approach is different than the typical emulation/virtualization solution. Take a look at coLinux's web site:
http://www.colinux.org/ - OnipSemaj, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1It is not "old or what". andLinux runs without a live CD and is installed directly to your HD.
- lenninct, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1DLS, UBuntu can be installed to your HDD as well, live cd option is how i test drive them.
- mattmcm, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Try reading the damned article. Have you ever used VirtualBox's seamless mode? This is like that.
In short, GTFO.

- lenninct, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1DLS, UBuntu can be installed to your HDD as well, live cd option is how i test drive them.
- dagr8tim, on 02/19/2008, -5/+7VMware player and server are both free. Either install Server (takes more resources) and build your own VM's. Or install player and download instances/build your own with alittle creativity.
I created some blank machine templates at work (by not allocating all of the diskspace, they are tiny), and I can build one off VM's by editing the config file with a text editor.- lexbaby, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Good idea, but andLinux takes it a step further. With this you can run Linux apps in your Windows shell. No segregated virtual machines.
- MattBD, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I like VirtualBox - a great way of trying new distros.
- whitenerdy92, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1I used to use virtual machines, but they were slow as hell on my old computers. With andLinux, I notice only a mild performance loss.
- Rotzooi, on 02/19/2008, -12/+66Don't slam this because in your view Linux-under-Windows is the wrong way around, Linux fanboys. This is a great way for Windows users to get safely acquainted with Linux.
- rmxz, on 02/19/2008, -2/+28Slammed because this is a great way for Windows users to get a bad impression with Linux. These solutions of running 2 OS's at once invariably have corner cases where they conflict in some way (even, say, I/O bandwidth or graphics memory when using things like vmware); and leave people with a bad impression of the OS they're less familiar with since that's where they'll place the blame. Solutions like this is how rumors that Linux is slow and/or unstable spread.
- trunk8, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5I've heard some rumors about Linux, but never that it's slow or unstable. Besides, anyone who is willing to give this a try probably already knows that it's not an "answer"...it's just a way for them to preview Linux, which could eventually lead to them installing it as a dual boot....which could eventually lead to them installing it as their primary OS. Sometimes people need a stepping stone, it's not a bad thing. BTW, I just installed Ubuntu last weekend and I'm loving it so far :o)
- RetepNamenots, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1What else would you suggest though, other than actually installing the OS to a hard drive?
I do agree with you about it possibly giving a bad impression; I don't like LiveCDs because they usually take a while to load, and even then are slow. Doesn't give a good impression if I'm trying to show someone the best alternative to Windows there is.- covertbadger, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Depends whether you're running it on a box with gobs of RAM. Some live cds support a -toram boot option, which deflates the whole image directly into RAM rather than streaming it off the CD. Most apps load near-instantaneously when freed from the tyranny of the HDD, and it will completely smoke Windows for performance on the same hardware, at the expense of boot time. Sure, it's not a fair comparison, but what the hey ;-)
- Myztry, on 02/19/2008, -2/+9It's great. Just shows Linux can be custom built to go anywhere. If you wanted to achieve the same with Windows, you'd need to show up on Microsoft's door with a jar of anal lube and a donut cushion. And all you'd get is a wider stance.
- tstst, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1This is quite possibly the best comment I have ever read on digg....well played sir
- Myztry, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2An example of this is the XEN hypervisor. Microsoft cooperated with the University of Cambridge Operating System Group to develop a guest version of Windows. Then left and denied anyone access to the port. XEN Source then sold the rights to Citrix. Microsoft is now 'innovating' with Hyper-V in it's Windows Server 2008. "Hyper-V will include the ability to act as a Xen virtualization hypervisor host". Pass the anal lube...

- automate, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3Live CD's are a much better way to get "safely acquainted" with Linux.
- redxxx, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1they are a poor way to have linux functionality and windows codex and drivers though.
This is probably a very horrible way to get safely acquainted with anything, though. Beta (has it even made it that far?) software tends to be like that. All the issues of linux and windows at the same time? woot sign me up.
If only there was a damn torrent instead of a couple of hammered http mirrors and a seemingly dead FTP. - MattBD, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1True, although an even better way is to install it to a USB pendrive - http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ - I have installed Linux Mint to a 2GB pendrive so I can whip it out and show people Compiz-Fusion.
- wtfpwned98, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2Because Linux is far safer than Windows, the safest way to get acquainted with Linux would be to replace Windows with Linux.
- tstst, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1What is a "Live CD", I'm leaning towards it is a CD with linux on it that you can boot from?
- JeffD, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1Exactly, basically the OS gets loaded into memory. They're great for rescuing trapped data from PCs with corrupted Windows installs (or any other OS that wont load due to corrupted files for that matter).
- redxxx, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1they are a poor way to have linux functionality and windows codex and drivers though.
- Cryoniq, on 02/19/2008, -3/+1Uhm.. no.. this is NOT a safe way for users to get in touch with GNU/Linux. It is the most terrible way one ever could think of.

- atomicwedgie, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5I've done Vista on 3 of my machines... went back to XP on one, moved on to Linux on the other two. I think you're in the minority these days but hey, if Vista works for you, then good on ya mate.
- mgromer, on 02/19/2008, -2/+0I could be in the minority. Works well for my wife and roomate as well. And my friends who are all running it. IMO, most of the people with Vista issues are running some obscure program (blame falls on the software manufacturer). Remember, I said most. There are always exceptions.

- usingpond, on 02/19/2008, -4/+25Well this is just the complete opposite of a useful solution.
- tasty247, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Not really. This is perfect for people (like me) who would much rather run Linux but work at a place that mandates Windows.
- DaveDude, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3We need some mirrors. Or someone who has it needs to put it on a bittorrent tracker.
- jhuebel, on 02/19/2008, -2/+6I dugg it mainly because it appears to be a reasonably seamless way to run Linux on Windows. Probably won't install it myself, though.
- jhuebel, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1I did install it on my Dell Latitude D630. Unfortunately, it ran like crap. Didn't see anything in the forums that would be helpful in understanding why it takes upwards of 20 minutes to completely boot up. Firewall is turned completely off and I had plenty of disk space and RAM (2GB). I'll give it another try when the next beta is released.
- xdevit, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2Mirror ?
- andyakadum, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Vain bastard.
- ninjasenses, on 02/19/2008, -8/+1Dumb. why would you run both at the same time? run one or the other.
- br0ken1128, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3Sound like a troll, but I'll reply .. in my case this is perfect.. I have to run windows at my office but I prefer linux .. this way I can have my windows system and still run all of my favorite apps as well as have a nice linux shell .. and it looks very native to windows.
- OnipSemaj, on 02/19/2008, -9/+3But will it blend?
- Kythas, on 02/19/2008, -3/+1No, but it'll slice and dice. But wait, there's more! Order now and you'll receive a free set of Ginsu Knives!
- Rewdog, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9jerryleecooper says, "See, this proves my point."
( http://digg.com/linux_unix/User_does_not_believe_L ... )- jlungu, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1lol ... i missed this previously. thanks!
- jaymzz, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3Why does this for some reason remind me of Brett's camera phone in Flight of the Conchords?
- voodoochild461, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4Virtual Machine, you can run a whole bunch of different OSs in Windows. Check it out
- phaedrusiszen, on 02/19/2008, -2/+10That's one way to make Linux crash prone
- Qposter, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3The reason you might want to do this is because you have to use outlook at work and want linux tools while using the corp pc. I have a dual boot into linux cause VM player machines seemed too slow and I don't really need linux tools very often so I just reload into linux if I need it. I only had 1GB of ram back then now I have 4GB so I think a linux vm would be great if I find a need for it.
The networking tools available for maintaining networks in linux for free are just awesome. NMIS, SEC, RANCID... These kind of tools you install on a server but getting them up and running and learning how they work is much faster on a VM or a Dual boot system.
So I'd imagine that there are way better programs for just about anything you can think of in Linux and if you are trying to find a program that does something better than in windows run Linux on windows to test those programs.
Creating a dual boot system is not too hard but a mistake can cause big headaches and like I said eariler some people are stuck running windows YUK!!! Did anyone see that Vista patch continuously reboots and the only fix right now is reload or restore haha M$ucks! - EEdesigner, on 02/19/2008, -3/+18Isn't that sort of like towing a Ferarri with a Pinto?
- bardo77n, on 02/19/2008, -13/+7Run Linux in Windows? That's like saying "Eat a fine steak in a steaming pile of *****."
- PJBovoNox, on 02/19/2008, -13/+4I think you mean it's like eating a steaming pile of ***** in the best steakhouse in the land
- bardo77n, on 02/19/2008, -5/+2No, I'm sure I meant what I typed.
- lime148, on 02/19/2008, -2/+2Maybe, but you can just close andLinux and then you'll be back to having your fine steak without *****.
- PJBovoNox, on 02/19/2008, -13/+4I think you mean it's like eating a steaming pile of ***** in the best steakhouse in the land
- AdHaR, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1mirrors (to the download)?
- slack31337, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1yes we need mirrors
- AdHaR, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2someone make a torrent!
- m37all1ca, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Try this: http://burgunder.cs.uni-paderborn.de.nyud.org/andl ... I'm downloading it right now @ about 110KB/sec....
- wayne247, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Once you got it all, could you please post a torrent so we can share the load?
- SysStream, on 02/19/2008, -0/+0torrent to-rent ?
- PJBovoNox, on 02/19/2008, -12/+6Now all they need to do is develop a Linux application that's actually _worth running_ in Windows and it's a done deal
- RaiKitsune, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Amarok for starters...
- agaudet, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Amarok, SMplayer, VLC, Handbrake, Sumatra PDF
all these are linux software or using Linux software
and this is just a few of the amazing pieces of OSS software
Koffice, Open Office, Audacity, GIMP, Apache, MySQL, PostGreSQL
does the list need to go on?
- LittleLORDevil, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1VMBox is another awesome way to do this with the seamless feature enabled.
- michaelvanes, on 02/19/2008, -5/+1Wow... this is hot!
- bullox, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Okay Paris.
- azAZ09, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2bassackwards
- madwormer2, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Tmesis!
- brotherjohn1234, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1any torrents out ?
- liquidmetalband, on 02/19/2008, -14/+1This is completely pointless. People get Linux if they can't afford Windows. Why would someone with Windows want to run Linux?? You're not even going to get speed improvements, because you're running it in Windows..
Just what is the point?? Someone tell me....- LittleLORDevil, on 02/19/2008, -0/+11Not all people get linux just because they can't afford Windows. Pretty ignorant statement.
- pjman, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4I have to run Windows on my work laptop and since I'm unable to dual-boot, because of full disk encryption, this seems like a nice option for me.
- amirman, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1i think they make an application that you run from within windows that reboots your system and tells it to boot from where you want. i think... maybe...
- wayne247, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5The point is to be able to run a linux environment with linux apps without leaving windows. My work computer is Windows, whether I like it or not. I can't boot Linux because many corporate systems will fail. On the other hand, the ability of running Linux apps in my windows PC allows me to run several development tools specific for linux.
Other ways of doing that (VMWare and such) imply you're emulating a whole system, which is consumes a lot of resources from your system. This thing is neat. Perhaps not for you, but it was made for a reason, and I'm part of that reason. - MattBD, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1It's a great way to try it. I sometimes use VirtualBox to run Linux distros on top of Windows Vista so I can try them without installing. I only use it with that computer because it's more powerful than my Kubuntu machine. As there's so many distros, it can be difficult to choose one and VirtualBox allows you to "try before you buy".
- bluezombie, on 02/19/2008, -1/+9"We are the Borg. Lower your [firewalls] and surrender your [chips]. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile."
- addictedd, on 02/19/2008, -0/+0any alternative mirrors? can't seem to even start it :(
- amirman, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1there's a torrent up above.
- Garibaldi3489, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I tried this when it was still a PreBeta, and i had problems with it on Vista. However this release looks much more full-featured and I'm looking forward to trying to it, but we need another mirror. Any links?
- Brian.Honaker, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I've mirrored on my site. They have linked to them on the main site.
- Chebsi, on 02/19/2008, -0/+0Thanks for the mirror. I can't install Ubuntu on my laptop, so this software will be very useful.
- OrionBlastar, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Actually the VNC Viewer you need to connect to the virtual machine doesn't work with Vista. I am not sure about the CoLinux virtual machine itself, but when I downloaded the RealVNC viewer it said Vista was not supported, unless you bought the commercial version. I still run XP, but to be honest, VMWare seems to be a better solution for me and it is free as well. I got an old Intel Celeron 700Mhz system that I run Fedora on, and it runs better than CoLinux does, and X11 actually worked on the Celeron system, unlike CoLinux.
- Brian.Honaker, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I've mirrored on my site. They have linked to them on the main site.
