- Lane, on 11/01/2007, -4/+73I suppose its worth the cost of upgrading, and by cost i mean free!
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -4/+51I always Pirated Windows, then I swapped to Ubuntu.... eventually I got a laptop with a legal version of Windows on it and I keep thinking about switching to Ubuntu again anyway... All I do on the laptop is photos, email, internet, chat, videos and other basic things (GMA900 doesnt play games very well)..... Thinking about it I use Pigeon , OO , Picasso, Firefox and Thunderbird to do tall that... so Now that I think about it , its time to switch back
- akkibaba, on 10/29/2007, -1/+40*Pidgin, as long as we're playing this game.
- afanasy, on 10/29/2007, -1/+39nice review, ubuntu gets more and more user-friendly and compiz fusion just rocks
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -1/+38now that I think about it, I do.
- aywwts4, on 10/28/2007, -1/+31it takes a hell of a lot less time than windows does.
I setup gutsy in under 20 minutes, Fully configured, all drivers installed, compiz fully running. then I waited 30 minutes for patches to download, they ran themselves after two clicks. Reboot. I installed 20+ additional programs by clicking twice each, then I spent 30 minutes playing with compiz. Most of that hour and a half was spent in the living room.
Compare that to configuring two vista laptops for family. 1 hour either reinstalling windows or de-crappifying it, 20 minutes installing antivirus and firewall, I accept, I accept, I agree, yes, yes, accept, then a bunch of time to track down drivers, find the vista 64bit version and install them, I accept, I accept, yes, yes, agree, yes, Reboot. Reboot, Reboot, then I needed to find the programs I wanted, So I went to each website, found the vista version, downloaded them individually, yes these files may be harmful, yes accept, allow, yes, yes. reboot, 3-4 hours later and tons of stress, I come out of it with a fully configured windows box which I hopefully wont have to support in the near future. - dext3r, on 10/29/2007, -1/+30You think a lot.
- stmiller, on 10/29/2007, -0/+28Beta is due out any minute now...
- eean, on 10/29/2007, -2/+29Wow, you mean not everyone on the Internet has native English skills?
- AngelicRaver, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27Thank god they added some x.org features. Manually changing it is a pain the ass sometimes.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -5/+28This game sucks, let's play hungry hungry hippos (hopefully also a future Ubuntu release)
- markp93, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19You don't -hate puppies-, do you?
http://tech.tolero.org/gutsy-review-images/ubuntu% ... - alexdemers, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18What's wrong by promoting a better operating system than Windows on the front page? It should be on New York Times Homepage! Again, if you've had enough about linux/ubuntu, turn off the linux_unix category on your profile page.
Getting tired of saying that phrase to everyone who makes stupid comments on Linux or Ubuntu... *sigh* - diggapleaze, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Dude, what the hell are you even talking about? Why would a kernel do anything like that. Please tell me you forgot your /sarcasm tag.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -5/+20*Picasa
- TimTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15This is actually the best Gutsy evaluation I've seen yet on digg. So far I've only seen reviews say "OMG GNOME OMG COMPIZ, NOTHING ELSE MATTERS." This one seems to cover everything important, even some upgrades I didn't know about. I may very well grab the beta ahead of time now.
- Ansible, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15I heard they have a change to turn off touchpad clicking, thank gawd.
- diggapleaze, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14That's because Compiz Fusion is only an openGL window manager.
What I think you are wanting in Linux is an openGL widget framework, such as Clutter ( http://clutter-project.org/ ) or Pigment ( https://code.fluendo.com/pigment/trac ) both of which are open source competitors to Apple's Core Animation and both of which are being developed by for-profit companies (OpenedHand and Fluendo).
It's unfair to say that something slick like Cover Flow or Time Machine won't ever be in the Linux Desktop considering projects like Awn and Elisa are already using these widget effects frameworks. - volanin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15This latest release of Gutsy is turning up to be really fine, but the default wallpaper shipped with it is receiving quite a lot of negative criticism. There is a petition online to replace the current default wallpaper (known as Brown Fluid) for the amazing Animal Series wallpapers. You can check the wallpapers and read more about it here: http://www.petitiononline.com/gutsy710/petition.ht ... , and if you agree with what's being proposed, please digg it here: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Online_Petition_Change_ ... , so that more people can participate.
- specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Brown Fluid, lol.
- wigren, on 10/29/2007, -2/+13I dugg it on a digg.com
- Lylepalooza, on 10/29/2007, -0/+11Lol, the poor English was the main reason I read it. It was entertaining and useful!
- LinuxKitty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Vista features in a nutshell: fantastic DRM, excellent hardware hogging, marvelous security holes, exciting driver incompatibilities. For businesses the best feature: Microsoft extended the support cycle for XP. There you go. You're welcome!
- wiihuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9"PS: If you like this article, dugg it on a digg.com!"
consider it dugged, champ! - sloppychris, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10"Microsoft ntfs file system support should be available for reading and writing by default (by ntfs-3g driver using FUSE). Additional set of utilities for manipulation with ntfs partitions such as format, resize, undelete and etc. is accessible via ‘ntfsprogs’ package."
I hadn't heard, this is exciting for me since I made "the switch" but haven't migrated all my crap to my ext3 formatted partitions. The ability to delete from my ntfs partitions will make that process much easier. - aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Wow, I just looked and my gutsy+compiz system is using 350mb of ram, i have at least 40 windows open on four desktops and everything is a ***** 3D cube at the touch of a button, and I have nearly every compiz effect except water and fire enabled. My vista box can use over 750 with just a window or two open.
- electricalen, on 10/29/2007, -11/+18Good review but it pains me to read it. It looks like it was written by a 1st year foreign exchange student.
- sloppychris, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Not just bothersome, but a huge roadblock to new users.
- oobuntu, on 10/18/2007, -0/+6i think this is what the EU was talking about. if microsoft weren't abusing their strong position to force manufacturers to put OEM windows onto machines then a lot more people would be asking the linux question. additionally a few hardware manufacturers might up their game and release drivers (netgear and friends)
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That's what I do on mine. I'd wait until the full release comes out so there's no upgrading hassles though.
- stmiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That has to do more with the kernel than any particular distro. http://www.kernel.org
- Onestone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I predict 14 hours from now.
- TooManyHobbies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It currently takes a little experience or luck to install flawlessly depending on your hardware. (But as there is more interest, drivers will improve.)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5thats cuz hes a "linux sucks" spammer. He's like a bot, except a little smarter.
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10*free time
- Amablue, on 10/18/2007, -1/+5Wow, apparently Linux is illegal now. I hate the computers here at work...
"Your organization's Internet use policy restricts access to this web page at this time. Reason:
The Websense category "Illegal or Questionable" is filtered." - IEatHamburgers, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7It definitely does take a lot less time, but anyone who has had Econ 101 will tell you that there's no such thing as free, there's an opportunity cost in everything. Upgrading Ubuntu will take about 20 minutes (unless, like me, you're unlucky enough to have a computer with a Broadcom Wifi card, a Conexant modem, an ATI video card and a crazy-ass mic port that I still can't fix :] ) that you could have used to argue nonsense on Digg. Upgrading Windows, on the other hand, takes maybe two hours, a hundred plus dollars, and it may come along with possible junkware to remove, and potential driver issues. Ubuntu wins :)
- makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+4He's trying to be one of the "cool kids." Leave him alone.
- aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Please digg this one into oblivion. (This is the second time today this has happened and I'm sure I didn't click twice.)
- bobonthecob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3the only reason I boot windows is for a quick game now and then. And new versions of VM software will fix that soon enough
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I just tried Ubuntu for the first time the other day... Dear God, getting the drivers to work with my ATI card and my wifi card were such a pain in the ass. I like what they're doing, but still... Ugh...
- Coldkill, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4momsshizzle, all you do is say "Linsux"........why?
- Cherubim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Good summary. I like the fact that they've addressed issues with editing xorg.conf. It's also good to see Compiz Fusion at a stable level.
- srg13, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3ATI drivers just plain suck - notihing to do with the distro (although some may make them easier to install than others). Now the ATI specs are out, open source drivers are being released, and they will probably be included by default in less than a year. Then they should work with no configuration, with 3D etc (like the Intel drivers). Until then, you can manually set up the driver (not all that hard if you follow some tutorials) or use an nVidia card (one click install in the Restricted Drivers Manager).
- aburd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's a Broadcom 4306 internal chip. I probably shouldn't have called it a card over and over again. It's been since pre-Feisty Fawn since I tried to use it.
- ilobmirt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Don't even get started on Servers.
I decided one time to install a Linux LAMP Server onto a virtual machine.
I pop in the disc, select the LAMP option, wait for 10 minutes at most, and then add an hour or two tweaking server and files.
Before I know It, I have a working LAMP server I could possibly host a website on.
The closest thing you get to a Windows Web server is Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.
I had installed one of the trialware versions of this operating system to check out how Windows could compete with LAMP.
I pop in the cd, move through formatting and legal mumbo jumbo, computer settings and don't forget the activation over phone or internet. An hour, if not two later, I get a barebones windows server up and running. An hour if not two of installing software and adding content, and I have a web server that I could host my website on.
I understand that time costs $$$, so lets do some math... If the above linux scenario is typical, given that the administrator is competent and knows what (s)he is doing, it takes at most, 3 hours to set up a LAMP server. The price of a windows server (standard edition) Is close to $1,000. To match the price of Windows Server 2003, that Linux Admin would have to be paid a hefty $333.33 per hour to match the cost in time to install a lamp server to the price of buying the Windows Server 2003 Os.
I doubt that Linux Admins go for that much per hour.
I therefore conclude that Linux actually saves you time, and money. - tatinthehat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Converted over when 7.04 came out. Haven't had any major glaring problems since installation....except with configuring xorg. It's great now that BulletProof X is in 7.10 (correct me if I'm wrong), it'll make it easier for those who aren't as keen at command line to fix whatever maybe wrong with their video driver.
Also looking forward to see how Gnome 2.20 integrates into Gusty. ;) - Coldkill, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Him....smarter than a bot.......?
- sirdaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Anybody know if Gutsy will include the Gnome version with the new drag n drop support?? That is by far one of the most annoying things I find.
- Lylepalooza, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I smell a meme, the shirts are being printed as we speak
