- nininho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15This is a good replacement to PartitionMagic, because it“s free and can even change NTFS partitions.
A must have - Herolint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree. The way this was written was weird. This is a great utility for anybody that runs a PC, regardless of what OS you are running.
- bill.clark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Find me a Linux user that hasn't had/wanted to repartition an NTFS drive so they could dual boot without using a second hard drive at least once in their lives...
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7A review that teaches you how to repartition a NTFS drive shows how this is a must have for all Linux users?
I'm must be out of the loop. - kolavar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The latest live cd is missing hardware support for certain USB keyboards/mice, among other input devices.
GParted works much better on the Dapper live/install CD. - Cosmosis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Here's a link to the LiveCD ISO (mainly for myself and linking for friends, but I figured I'd post it here as well):
http://dl.us.xferla.net:8090/mirror/gparted.sourceforge.net/gparted-livecd-0.2.5-1.iso - aussieaubs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yes PM does ext3
- maddox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I use gparted on the dapper live disk all the time at work, it rocks!
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't think PM can do Linux EXT3 well. Has anyone tried it? Also, gparted is just a front end over parted. Also, qtparted is another good front end included in KNOPPIX.
- Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Maybe this review isn't oriented very well to the topic, but GParted LiveCD is great. I've been using it since the last time it was on the digg front page (like a month ago?) and I'm amazed at its capability. Resizing NTFS is great, but so is resizing a lot of other partition types. Just amazing.
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ - anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4While I think this article is kind of *****, I'll digg it anyway to help spread the word of this great software. I've been using Gparted for a few months now on several systems. From my experience, GParted works a lot faster than Partition Magic. Great opensource tool, all in all. I hope this is the beginning of a trend. It would be great to use F/OSS tools at work instead of pirated copies of proprietary software (we get limited funds for software we need)
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I want a partition program that can change HFS+ and NTFS. I'm gonna see if I can get this to work, maybe it does already, maybe some code has to be added.
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Site is down here....
Looks like a good replacement to partition magic.
dugg mirror doesn't work either: http://www.duggmirror.com/linux_unix/ReviewLinux.Com:_GParted_LiveCD_0.2.5-1_A_Must_Have_Disc_/ - xenocrates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My favorite part about this livecd is that it supports working with ReiserFS. I just used GParted a few weeks ago to move my linux install to a larger HD and it worked flawlessly. Partition Magic, to my knowledge, still has yet to support Reiser.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3qtparted does, gparted should ( as it is a front end for parted also ) but for some strange reason currently doesn't.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No it doesn't. Look at you own screenshot geez. Anyways parted can, gparted can't (crazy I know), qtparted can.
- haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That CD is four times the size of the one featured in this story, but it looks good anyway.
- rkuchiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My custom Partition Magic 7 boot CD can also convert from NTFS to Fat32 (useful if you want to write to a partition under Linux, like an external drive). Based on the screenshots, there is no partition conversion. Seems nice, but it has a ways to go before it is "better than Partition Magic".
- Chrysaor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can GParted resize HFS+ partitions?
- flashtrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another great linux usb or live cd tool distro is INSERT this thing has tons of hacking tools password recovery, partion tools etc fits on a usb key (60mbs) or credit card cdrom. if your a system admin or need to recover a system be sure to check out INSERT
http://www.inside-security.de/insert_en.html - john72carter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hi
will this repartition a 300GB external maxtor drive, formatted in NTFS. want to have a "sand box" installation rather than messin up my dapper.
thanks john - JeffreyAtW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2gparted on the Dapper Install CD destroyed my NTFS partition, and I had to write over another partition to install Windows XP, install GetDataBack for NTFS, and recover everything.
gparted still isn't 100% reliable when it comes to NTFS partitions, and backing everything up is a MUST. - haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Screenshot of partition types you can create:
http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/1996/gpartedcreatenew3pa.png - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No but qtparted can. It doesn't make sense but it is true.
- JeffreyAtW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd agree with you but then gparted destroyed my NTFS partition with a simple resize.
- amoeba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just to clarify, I could use this to resize an XP NTFS partition, create a new one and install linux in the new partition?
What are the risks of corrupting the NTFS partition?
I'm sure many XP users wanting to try Linux would like to know the answer to this question. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Generally, I'd say do a 128MB boot partition for Linux, then a 512 or 1024MB swap partition (for Linux), then 20 or so for Linux (do the swap and linux root as an extended partition), then 20 or so for windows, then the rest as a FAT32 shared data partition.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes you can. It is safer that Partition Magic and I have never heard of a problem but you should back up everything to be sure anyways.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love this nifty little app. Used it lots of times, but live-cd is even better. It kicks the hell out of PartitionMagic.
- majormar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Word Of Warning
Before you attempt this you would be wise to defrag your windows partition. This should move all the data to the beginning of the partition so you can use what is left over on the end. This is probably why some people end up losing data or destroying their XP installations. I do this all the time using GParted from the Knoppix distro and I always start with a defrag.
Perhaps I will do a tutorial on the_source about it. http://www.thesourceshow.org - pal32i, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1maybe its the software or my hard drive have a issue, its not creating a partitions as i require.
when I checked error msg it says HD has a bad sector (apparently atleast 1) but my winXP runs fine
I checked gparted forum but its kinda empty on response
maybe someone here have a clue
(Note: I also tried Dapper, Fedora to install but no succes cuz of partition issue) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if anyone has used both gparted and partition logic (yes, that says LOGIC), what are the advantages of one over the other?
- daller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Really nice to have.
I would say this is much better than partition magic. - atrerra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I just burned the gparted iso and upon booting I get a checksum error as it starts to load. I don't burn a lot of bootable CD's, so it's either a problem with this image or, more likely I'm doing something wrong.
I did successfully burn the Dapper Live disc no problem but didn't realize it has gparted included - I'll go try that... - Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Dapper CD -- > ALT+F2 --> gksudo gparted --> Run

"Can GParted resize HFS+ partitions?"
yes it does
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/generalities/big/1-main-1b.gif
this will give you all an idea of how many file systems are supported
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/generalities/gparted.htm
here is some general documentation - quicksand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Anyone have a partition sizing guide or rule of thumb for a dual boot linux/xp machine? I found this to be a pretty good reference⦠any thoughts?
http://partition.radified.com/
Not turn this into a help board. - flashtrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0pretty sure that INSERT can or at least it says it supports it on the site. good luck!
